The first time I shot actor headshots, I booked the same kind of studio I used for corporate portrait work. Clean white background, good soft box setup, plenty of room. The photos were technically fine. The actor came back a week later and told me, politely, that they hadn't got any auditions from them. Their previous headshots — taken in a different studio with a different photographer — were doing better.

That conversation pushed me to actually understand what the casting process requires. And it turns out the studio spec for actor headshots is meaningfully different from the corporate equivalent — in ways that affect which room you book and what you ask the studio for.

What Spotlight actually requires

Spotlight is the primary casting directory for professional actors in the UK. Almost every working actor in Britain has a Spotlight profile, and a significant proportion of casting calls from UK casting directors go through the platform. Getting the headshot right for Spotlight isn't just about aesthetics — there's a technical spec the platform requires.

The main practical requirement is image quality: high-resolution files that upload cleanly, no watermarks, and a clear view of the actor's face. The standard Spotlight headshot is a head-and-shoulders framing — not a tight crop to the face, but not a three-quarter shot either. Some photographers deliver full-length and three-quarter shots as additional options, but the primary Spotlight image is head and shoulders.

Critically: the image needs to show how the actor looks now, at the time of submission. Not how they looked three years ago, not with heavy retouching that removes the features casting directors use to identify the person. A Spotlight headshot functions as an accurate visual record of the actor's current appearance. Excessive retouching is specifically flagged as problematic by Spotlight's own guidance, and it irritates casting directors who've seen an actor in person and the headshot doesn't match.

The lighting difference from corporate work

Corporate portrait lighting prioritises a clean, professional appearance. Soft frontal key light, minimal shadow, a slightly elevated, authoritative feel. It's designed to make someone look trustworthy and senior without being too characterful.

Actor headshot lighting should do something different. A casting director looking at a Spotlight profile is trying to understand what roles this person could play. They need to see the actor's face with enough dimensionality to get a sense of character, personality, range. Flat lighting that removes all shadow removes that information.

The typical approach for actor headshots is slightly more directional than corporate work — a key light at roughly 45 degrees, filling with a reflector rather than a secondary light, allowing some shadow on the face that gives depth without going into the chiselled contrast of a fashion shoot. The result is a face with information in it. Not perfect and flat. Real and readable.

What this means for the studio: you need a space where you can position a single key light at the right angle, use a reflector or bounce card for fill, and have enough room around the subject that you're not getting wall bounce from close surfaces interfering with the ratio. A small portrait studio with white walls right up to the subject can actually work against this — the room fills in shadow before the reflector has the chance to, and you lose control of the ratio.

Backdrop options

The Spotlight headshot background debate has been going on for years. There was a period where everyone used clean white or very light grey. Then there was a swing toward outdoor-look backgrounds — a slightly out-of-focus garden or street — because they looked more natural and less corporate. Then back toward neutral studio backdrops because the outdoor-look backgrounds had become clichéd.

Currently, for most casting submissions in the UK, a mid-grey or mid-toned neutral backdrop is standard. Not white — white backgrounds date quickly and read as overly formal. Not dark — dark backgrounds can make the headshot feel too dramatic for general submissions, though they work for specific character types. Mid-grey gives the photographer flexibility in post and reads well across different casting contexts.

Studio muslin is the standard backdrop material for this. A 2.7m wide muslin in mid-grey, properly ironed, at the right distance from the subject. Most portrait studios that do any acting headshot work will have this, but it's worth confirming. You don't want to arrive and find they only have white vinyl and a black cotton backdrop with a small hole in the corner.

The showreel brief — different setup, different needs

Showreel work — filming short dramatic scenes for an actor's showreel — is a different studio problem from headshots, and the two are sometimes conflated in studio bookings in ways that cause problems.

For showreel filming, you're shooting video. Which means continuous lighting. Which means the considerations from earlier posts apply — proper blackout, good colour rendering (CRI/TLCI above 95 preferred), enough power for the rig without sharing a ring main with everything else in the building.

Showreel scenes are typically short — a page or two of script, maybe one or two takes of each. But the setup needs to look like a real scene, not a studio shoot. Which means backgrounds that read as rooms or locations, not as photography studio backdrops. Some actors bring printed backgrounds or fabric drops. Some studios have set elements — a practical door, bookshelves, a corner of a desk — that read convincingly on camera. Ask what's available before you book.

Sound is also a consideration that headshot studios don't have to think about. A showreel scene needs clean, quiet audio. A studio on a busy road with single-glazed windows is not suitable for showreel work, regardless of how good the lighting is. Ask explicitly about external noise and whether the space has any acoustic treatment.

Budget realities for actor clients

Corporate clients book studios at commercial rates. Actor clients — particularly early-career or emerging talent — don't have commercial photography budgets. A Spotlight headshot session that costs the photographer a day-rate studio and produces final images for one person needs to be priced in a way that works for individual clients on modest budgets.

This means photographers who do a lot of actor headshot work tend to book studios by the half-day at off-peak rates, shoot multiple clients back-to-back, and pass the studio cost savings through in their pricing. A half-day portrait studio in London at £100–£180 (off-peak rates for smaller dedicated portrait spaces) is viable for this model. A commercial cyclorama at £650/day is not.

The studio for actor headshot work should be small-to-medium, designed for portrait use, with a proper backdrop rail and at least two lighting positions. A separate changing area for talent is a meaningful upgrade — actors change looks during a session, and doing that on the studio floor with no privacy is awkward for everyone.

Some portrait studios in London now advertise specifically for actor headshot work and have adjusted their pricing to reflect the market. They're worth finding if this is a regular part of your practice.

What to ask a studio when booking for actor headshots

What backdrop colours do you have available, and are they muslin or vinyl?
Is there a changing area separate from the studio floor?
Can I position a reflector or bounce card at close range to the subject without wall interference?
For showreel work: do you have any set elements — practical furniture, bookshelves, a door — that I can incorporate into scenes?
What's the noise environment like from outside?
