Architecture and interiors photography in a studio is a niche discipline that sits between set design and photography — and the studio you need for it is different from anything you'd book for a portrait or product shoot. I've spent the last few years shooting interior concepts for kitchen brands, furniture manufacturers, and one particularly demanding bathroom hardware client who wanted running water in the shots. Here's the spec checklist I've worked out the hard way.

The core problem is scale. A kitchen set build needs a floor run of at least 4m to look convincing. Add a breakfast bar island and you're at 5–6m. Add a camera position that allows a proper tilt-shift shot of the full space and you need another 3–4m behind the lens. You're quickly at 8–10m of studio depth for a brief that might look simple in a mood board.

Ceiling height: the one that kills briefs

This is the spec that most photographers check last and should check first. For interiors photography on a studio set, 3m ceiling height produces a set that looks like a set — because real kitchen and living room ceilings are 2.4–2.7m, and your lighting rig has to go above that. If the studio ceiling is only 3m, your lights are either out of frame by a few centimetres (risky on a tilt-shift shot) or the shadows fall wrong because the lights are too close to the action.

The minimum I'll book for a proper set build is 3.5m. Ideally 4m. That gives you genuine overhead clearance: a set with a 2.6m ceiling, lighting rigged above it at 3–3.2m, and space at the top for a boom arm or a practical fixture that needs to be above-frame but needs a cable run. It also means you can bring in a softbox that genuinely approximates window light rather than a compromise modifier that's too close to the subject.

London studios with 4m+ ceiling height in the right floor-area range are rarer than you'd think. The converted East London warehouses often clear this. The purpose-built studio spaces in W1 and WC1 often don't — they were built for portrait and fashion, not for set build. Ask the question before you look at anything else.

Floor spec: the decision most people get wrong

For architecture and interiors photography, the floor surface is part of the set — or it should be. Three common studio floor types:

Polished concrete. Visually interesting, strong reflections, very contemporary look. Useful if your brief calls for a modern industrial aesthetic. A problem if your client wants a traditional kitchen or a soft lifestyle interior — polished concrete reads as studio even to a casual viewer.

Painted floor (typically white or black). The standard photography studio floor. Works for sweep-style backgrounds, not for interior sets where the floor needs to look like a real floor. You'll be laying floor covering on top of it regardless.

Floating timber or composite floor. The most useful for interiors work. You can match the floor tone to a set build, it photographs naturally, and it doesn't need covering. Some studios in London have this as a permanent feature. It's worth filtering for it specifically if you're doing a lot of domestic interior briefs.

The thing most photographers miss: the floor area outside the set. You need staging space behind the camera position for your kit, your assistant's prep area, and the client. Three people watching a shoot take up more space than you think when you're already filling half the studio floor with a set build. Budget at least 30 sqm of clear space beyond the set — ideally 50 sqm. That means a 120–150 sqm studio minimum for a medium-complexity interior set.

The one spec everyone misses: load-bearing floor and ceiling points

Set builds are heavy. A full kitchen set with cabinetry, countertops, and an island in engineered stone can weigh 800–1,200kg. Most photography studios are built to take normal photographic foot traffic — people, camera equipment, lights. Not a fully fitted kitchen on a modular frame.

Ask specifically: what's the floor load rating? Anything above 400kg/sqm should be fine for most set builds. Below that, you need an engineer's sign-off or you limit the set build weight. Studio managers are often surprised by this question, which tells you something about how often they've hosted proper set builds versus fashion shoots.

The ceiling is the same issue. If you want to fly a practical light fixture from the studio ceiling — a pendant lamp or chandelier that reads as part of the interior set — you need a ceiling rated for that load. Not a heavy load: a pendant chandelier might be 5–10kg. But if the ceiling is just acoustic tile on a suspended frame, you can't attach anything to it safely. Ask before you assume.

Lighting for interior sets

Interior photography on set is usually about making artificial studio light read as natural light — window light, specifically. That requires large, diffused sources positioned to match the apparent window location in the set. An Arri SkyPanel S60-C through a large silk scrim reads convincingly as morning window light. Two of them at different angles gives you the impression of a corner room with two window walls.

The power draw on this kind of lighting setup is significant. Two SkyPanel S60-Cs at 420W nominal each, plus supplementary fill and practical fixtures in the set, and you're at 1,500–2,500W from the studio supply. A 32A single-phase supply is the minimum. Some set builds with HMI units need 3-phase. Always check the studio's power spec against your lighting plan before you finalise the booking.

Tungsten is still useful for practicals — incandescent light sources within the set that are meant to appear as table lamps, overhead fittings, or hidden under-cabinet LEDs. The warm colour of tungsten against a 5600K ambient can add depth and reality to a set in a way that all-LED can't always replicate. Some studios have dimmer boards installed that can manage both sources simultaneously. This is worth looking for if your brief needs practical lighting within the set.

Tilt-shift and large-format for studio interior work

Architecture photographers predominantly shoot with tilt-shift lenses to correct perspective distortion — the verticals-converging-inward problem that makes rooms look wrong. The Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L and the Schneider 90mm Super-Angulon are the workhorses here. Both require a camera position farther back from the set than most photographers expect, because tilt-shift corrects for the vertical convergence that you'd normally compensate for by tilting the camera up.

That means the camera-to-set depth needs to be even more generous than the set depth alone suggests. For a 5m kitchen set build, I want 4–5m between the front of the set and the camera position for a standard coverage shot with a 24mm TS-E. In a 100 sqm studio, that's tight. In a 150 sqm studio, it's manageable. In anything smaller, you're compromising the lens or the set size.

Studios that work for this in London

The East London warehouse cluster again — Hackney Wick, Bow, Stratford — has the raw space and ceiling height. Not all of those spaces have the floor quality for interior work without covering, but the ceiling and square footage are right. Budget for floor covering as a set cost rather than assuming the studio provides it.

In South London, a few studios around Deptford and Peckham have the right combination of ceiling height, floor quality, and loading access for set build work. The Peckham studio scene is younger than Hackney Wick but has matured significantly in the last two years. Worth viewing if you haven't been recently.

For studios outside London: Birmingham's Digbeth is the best regional option for set build work. The Victorian industrial buildings there have ceiling heights that match or exceed the East London warehouses, and the rate per square metre is meaningfully lower. For a production that's budgeting the set build carefully, that floor space saving matters.

The day rate for studio set-build work

Most studios in London price their largest spaces at £700–1,100 per day when the floor area is 150 sqm+ and the ceiling height clears 4m. That's the raw studio cost — before set build, lighting hire, crew, and any specialist equipment.

Set-build days often run to two or three days total: a build day, a shoot day, and a de-rig day. Each studio day on a three-day set build costs the full rate, which is why some producers negotiate a multi-day rate upfront. Most studios are open to this; the price break is usually 10–15% on a three-day block.
