The brief said beauty shoot. The studio said they had a full make-up area. What they had was a Hollywood mirror balanced on a trestle table, a single 13A socket, and a chair borrowed from the kitchen. The make-up artist arrived with a full kit bag and nowhere to put it, and we lost an hour of the morning trying to sort out a lighting workaround.

Beauty and make-up studio hire is one of those categories where the listing language is almost completely detached from what the space actually provides. Here's what I check now before I book anything.

What a proper make-up area actually requires

Start with the mirror. A Hollywood-style lighted mirror — the kind with individual LED or tungsten bulbs around the frame — is the baseline. Not a ring light propped on a stand, not a bathroom mirror with a torch beside it. The Hollywood mirror is the industry standard because it wraps light around the face evenly and lets a make-up artist see what they're doing without shadows. Without it, you're asking the MUA to work in conditions that compromise the whole shoot.

The colour temperature of the mirror matters too. Make-up applied under warm incandescent light looks different on camera under a daylight-balanced LED rig. A bi-colour Hollywood mirror that shifts between 3200K and 5600K lets the artist match their application to the shooting conditions. Not every studio has this, but it's worth asking. The perfect colour temperature for make-up work is between 4,800K and 6,000K — close to daylight — which is also what most modern bi-colour LED mirror systems can deliver.

And the mirror needs to be fixed. Freestanding mirrors on trestle tables move. They're not stable enough for a professional MUA working under time pressure. A wall-mounted Hollywood mirror with proper electrical supply to the bulbs is the only setup that works reliably.

Power at the make-up station

Two sockets minimum at the make-up table. MUAs arrive with heated styling tools — GHD Platinum+ straighteners, Dyson Airwrap, sometimes a heated cabinet for brushes — and the power draw of two devices running simultaneously is 2,000–3,000W. That's already pushing a 13A ring main. Add the lighted mirror and you're asking for trouble.

So ask: are the make-up sockets on a dedicated ring main, or do they share a circuit with the studio lights? Studios that have thought about this properly have isolated the make-up area electrically. The ones that haven't will tell you there are sockets and leave you to discover the limitation at 8am.

A separate 32A supply at the make-up station is the gold standard. You'll find this in studios that were specifically designed for beauty and fashion production. More common than you'd think in London — less common in the regions.

Mirror walls: when they're useful and when they're not

Some studios advertise mirror walls as a feature. And for certain briefs — dance studios, fitness content, some beauty campaigns — a full-height mirror wall is genuinely useful. You can shoot a subject from an angle that catches the reflection, which opens up framing options that don't exist in a standard space.

But mirror walls in beauty studio contexts are mostly a nuisance. They pick up camera operators, light stands, crew, and reflections of things you'd rather weren't in the shot. Unless the brief specifically requires the mirror wall to appear in frame, I'd rather have a white wall and a portable Hollywood mirror brought to the station.

The exception is beauty campaigns where the creative specifically calls for a reflective environment — those mirror-box setups you see in high-end skincare shoots. For that, you want a studio that has planned the mirror wall rather than inherited it from a previous use.

Lighting at the shooting position, not just the make-up area

Beauty photography has specific lighting requirements that most general-purpose studios don't think about. Ring lights are the obvious call — they create the catch light in the eye that's characteristic of beauty and skincare advertising — and for head-and-shoulders work, a large ring light on a central axis is the right starting point.

But ring lights for professional beauty work need to be big. A small 18-inch LED ring is a tool; a 60cm or larger ring is the working option for close-up facial work. Some studios include a beauty dish setup, which gives softer, more wraparound light than a ring on its own. The combination of a large ring light on axis with a beauty dish slightly above and in front is the setup I see working best for skincare and cosmetics campaigns.

Check what the studio's included kit actually is, and whether it matches what you'd spec yourself. A Godox AD600 strobe with a beauty dish modifier is useful. A consumer-grade ring light that saturates at max power is not. If the studio doesn't offer a kit spec list, ask before you arrive — and carry your own modifier bag as backup.

Studios with proper beauty areas in London

Ctrl Creative Studios in Camden is one I've used twice — 870 sqft with an 11ft arc cove and a proper beauty area that includes a wall-mounted Hollywood mirror. The make-up station has isolated sockets and enough bench space for a full kit bag. Not cheap (around £90–100 per hour) but everything works.

Soif Studios in Hackney Central has a dedicated double make-up station and a proper hair area. The studio lighting setup includes Godox strobes, a large octabox, and space to bring your own heads if you need more output. Good natural light through north-facing windows too, which helps on mixed-light briefs.

Some of the newer studios in Dalston and Peckham have beauty areas as standard — partly because content creator demand has pushed studios to include them. But the quality varies: always ask for photos of the make-up station specifically, not just the studio space. The wide-angle lens that makes the shooting floor look enormous can make the make-up corner look acceptable when it isn't.

Outside London

Dedicated beauty studio infrastructure outside London is thinner. Manchester has a few — the better Ancoats spaces often include a basic make-up area — but the Hollywood mirror and isolated power standard drops off quickly as you move away from London.

In Birmingham, Sheffield, and Leeds, the approach I take is to carry a portable Hollywood mirror and a compact make-up kit stand rather than relying on what the studio provides. Budget for the extra van space and you're not disappointed. The studio saving in those cities (usually 30–40% below London rates) more than covers the cost of bringing your own beauty infrastructure.

There are exceptions. A few studios outside London — particularly those that have grown out of fashion photography hubs — have invested in proper beauty areas. But they're worth specifically verifying before you book, not assuming.

The checklist I send for beauty and make-up shoots

Type of make-up mirror: freestanding or wall-mounted, lighted with fixed bulbs or LED panel
Colour temperature range of the mirror lighting
Number of sockets at the make-up station and whether they're on a dedicated circuit
Total power at the make-up area (13A ring, 32A, or isolated supply)
Bench or table dimensions — MUA kit bags are large and need a full-width surface
Whether the make-up area is enclosed or in the open studio (matters for noise and light spillage)
Studio included kit: size and type of ring light or beauty dish, if any
Separate toilet and changing facilities — talent on a beauty shoot needs both

That list sounds obvious in retrospect. But the difference between a studio that answers it well and one that gives vague reassurances is usually the difference between a morning that flows and one that doesn't.

The rate picture for beauty-specific studios

A properly equipped beauty studio in London — wall-mounted Hollywood mirror, isolated power at the station, included ring light or beauty dish — will run £75–110 per hour. That's 10–20% above the standard photography studio rate in the same city, which reflects the fit-out cost.

Half-day and full-day rates for London beauty studios are typically £350–600 for a half-day (four hours), £600–1,000 for a full day. The higher end of that range is for studios with multiple cyc options, large included kit packages, and more central locations.

Outside London, a genuinely equipped beauty studio runs £40–70 per hour in Manchester, £35–60 in Birmingham and Leeds. The floor-to-ceiling standard is lower but the price gap is meaningful on anything longer than a two-hour booking.
