I keep meeting London shooters who've never hired a room outside the M25. Fine — the density in east London is hard to beat. But Birmingham has been my quiet second city for about eighteen months now, and the maths are starting to make sense for anyone shooting for Midlands clients or who just wants a day rate that doesn't open with a 7.

This isn't a glossy round-up. These are the rooms I've actually paid for, the ones I'd go back to, and the bits of the city I've learned to avoid on shoot days.

Why Birmingham, in 2026

Two reasons. First, the client base. JLR, Aston Martin, Bournville, the BBC move at Digbeth — there's a working commercial scene here that isn't just London-agencies-driving-up. Second, the price gap. For a comparable 80–120 sqm white cyc room, I'm paying £400–£550 for a 10-hour day in Birmingham versus £750–£1,100 in central London. That's before transport savings for a Birmingham-based crew.

The catch? Fewer rooms. Probably a dozen serious commercial studios against London's hundreds. You need to book earlier, especially Tuesday–Thursday, and you need to know which ones close at 6pm sharp.

Digbeth: the obvious one, and mostly for good reason

Digbeth is what you'd expect — converted industrial units, the Custard Factory complex, a BBC campus being built, and a lot of brick walls people photograph. If you've shot in Hackney Wick, the feel is similar. Not identical. Hackney Wick has more listings per square mile and more daylight rooms; Digbeth has bigger units because the buildings were doing bigger things before they became creative space.

The rooms I've used here run from tight 40 sqm shoot rooms to a genuinely generous 180 sqm cyc that I'd put up against anything in Park Royal. Power is usually fine — 32A commando available on request at the better rooms, 13A rings as standard. Ceilings are the variable: some units are 2.8m (fine for people, tight for anything overhead), others are 4.2m–5m if you're in a former warehouse bay.

A few things I've learned the hard way here:

Load-in is postcode-dependent. Some studios back onto Floodgate Street with a proper roller door; others are first-floor with a stairwell from the main Custard Factory courtyard. Ask for photos of the load-in route, not just the room.
Parking matters more than in London. Everyone drives. If the studio doesn't have two dedicated spaces on site, factor in £15–£25 for a day in a multi-storey nearby.
Wi-Fi is patchy in the brick buildings. I tether client-side on a Three 5G hotspot rather than trust the house connection.

Jewellery Quarter: the daylight play

Different vibe completely. The JQ has older brick buildings with genuine tall sash windows, and a handful of studios have built their rooms around north-facing light. I shot a small jewellery campaign here last November — 10am to 3pm window — and got all twelve products done on natural light plus one Profoto B10 Plus on a 4-foot softbox for fill.

Rates are a touch higher than Digbeth, oddly. Think £450–£600 for a day in a proper daylight room with 3.5m ceilings. The reason, as far as I can tell: the landlords know what they've got and the buildings are listed, so fit-out costs are higher.

The JQ is also walkable to New Street in about 15 minutes. If your crew is coming up from London, that matters. Digbeth is a 20–25 minute walk or a short cab.

Custard Factory: the honest verdict

I'll say it — the Custard Factory is not one studio. It's an estate with a lot of different operators renting units, and the quality varies wildly. One unit I shot in had a newly poured cyc, fresh paint, 32A power and an owner who'd clearly done his research. Another, fifty yards away, had a taped-down corner curve, 13A only, and a stated ceiling height that turned out to be measured to the lowest roof beam (2.4m, not the 3.2m the listing claimed).

So: the Custard Factory postcode on its own tells you almost nothing. Ask for the specific studio name, see the specific room. If someone's listing uses 'Custard Factory' as the whole selling point with no further detail, that's usually a sign.

The postcode I'd skip

I won't name the specific studio, but I'd steer clear of anything listed as 'Eastside' with a B4 postcode and a floor above a music venue. I've done it once. The sub-woofers from the club below started at 4pm and shook my C-stands enough to blur tethered frames at 1/160. The room itself was fine. The location made it unusable after dark.

Check your booking dates against the venue's gig schedule. Not a joke.

What a typical day actually costs

For a full-day commercial shoot with three crew in a mid-range Digbeth cyc room, my last invoice broke down like this:

Studio hire, 10 hours: £485
Additional 32A power hookup: £40
Parking (two spaces, paid separately): £30
Coffee/water run: £18
Late finish surcharge (one hour over): £65

Total: £638 for the space. Add rail from Euston at £85 return booked a week out, and the whole day's room-plus-transport sits well under what you'd pay for a central London room alone.

Gear that actually makes sense up here

Most Birmingham studios don't come with lighting included, unlike some of the premium Shoreditch rooms. You'll either bring your own or hire from one of two sensible options:

Calumet Birmingham — day-rate hire on most of the standard kit. Pickup is faff if you're shooting in Digbeth; they're a 10-minute drive out. Their pricing is close to London Calumet give or take a couple of quid.
The studios themselves — two of the Digbeth rooms I use have in-house kit they'll add at £80–£120 for the day for a Profoto B10 Plus, a couple of modifiers and stands. That's often cheaper than Calumet once you factor pickup.

Bring your own lightshaping if you can. The 500Ws B10 Plus is plenty for most people work, and it tucks into a rucksack.

The food situation

Small thing, but it changes shoot days. Digbeth is solid for lunch — Digbeth Dining Club on Thursdays and Fridays, plenty of decent options within 5 minutes, and you can actually get a client fed for under £15 a head. The JQ is more limited; mostly cafes and a couple of bistros, nothing brilliant for a crew of six.

Factor it in. If you're planning a shoot with a brand client who expects proper catering, Digbeth wins.

Rates I'd expect to see in 2026

Based on quotes I've had across a dozen rooms in the last six months:

Small product room, 30–50 sqm, white backdrop only: £200–£320 per day
Mid-size cyc, 80–120 sqm: £400–£550 per day
Large cyc, 150–200+ sqm, 4m+ ceilings: £600–£850 per day
Daylight room in the JQ: £450–£600 per day
Half-day (4–5 hours): typically 65–70% of the day rate, not 50%

Weekend rates add about 15–25% in my experience, and late-finish surcharges kick in at either 6pm or 8pm depending on the operator. Get this in writing before you book. I had one owner try to charge me an extra £160 for finishing at 7.15pm on a day I'd quoted for 9am–7pm — it took a ten-minute phone call and a forwarded email to sort it, which I shouldn't have been doing on a Friday night.

A word on the 'boutique' claim

I see 'boutique studio' on a lot of Birmingham listings. In my experience this tends to mean: smaller room, nicer plants in reception, no cyc. That's fine if you're shooting portraits or small product. It's not fine if someone's sold you a boutique room for a fashion editorial and you turn up to find you can't fit a 9x9ft backdrop flat.

Ask for floor area in sqm and ceiling height in metres. Ignore the marketing language.

Getting crew up from London

Honest numbers: an off-peak Avanti from Euston to New Street is £35–£55 return if booked two weeks out. Peak morning can be £130+ open return. Most of my freelance crew will accept a rail fare built into the day rate; most won't drive unless you're paying mileage plus parking.

If you're hiring a DoP or a first assistant from London, factor in their travel day on top. A 9am start in Digbeth means a 7.15am train from Euston, which for most people isn't unreasonable as a day, but don't pretend it's the same as a 9am start in Shoreditch. Pay for the travel time or accept they'll want a 10am call.

Local Birmingham crew? Genuinely good. There's a small, tight community — a handful of DoPs, a decent pool of gaffers, two or three consistent first assistants, and a few digital techs who'll bill you £250–£350 for a day against London's £400–£500. Quality is comparable at the senior end. Finding them takes a phone call or two rather than a single agency.

Kit hire I actually use

Beyond Calumet, the other option I've tried is a small operator called Zenith in Jewellery Quarter — smaller inventory but cheaper, and they'll drop kit to your studio for £30–£50 depending on distance. For anything cinema-grade, The Hideaway up in Coventry is the closest proper rental house; their specialist HMI kit is closer to London prices but the delivery saves you a day.

For grip, there's usually enough in any decent Digbeth room to cover a standard shoot. If you need 12x12 frames, butterflies, or anything scenic-scale, plan for a rental day in advance — nobody in Birmingham has the scale of something like Panavision's grip room.

The hotel question

If you're booking multi-day in Birmingham, don't stay in the city centre. You'll pay £140–£200 for a room that'd be £90 in Digbeth or Eastside. The chain hotels in the Bullring are pricing against events at the NEC and the ICC, not against photography crews. A Premier Inn or Travelodge in Digbeth itself is often £70–£85 and a five-minute walk to the studio.

Would I move my London work up here?

No — because half my clients are in London and want to walk to the shoot. But for any project where the client is Midlands-based, or the budget is tight, or we need a bigger room than east London has at short notice, Birmingham is genuinely a better option than most London photographers realise. The rooms are there. The pricing is kinder. The drive-in access is easier. And you can actually park.

If you've been thinking about a Birmingham shoot and couldn't be bothered to dig through listings, start with Digbeth if you need a cyc and power, and the Jewellery Quarter if you need windows and good light. Everything else is secondary.
