The reflexive answer to 'where can I shoot in London?' is a white cyclorama. And that's fine. A lot of what I do ends up on a white cyc. But there's a growing slice of the briefs I get — luxury product, menswear, perfume, craft spirits, dark-aesthetic fashion — where the brief emphatically does not want a white background, and where a standard white studio with black paper pulled down still feels like a compromise.

A properly built blackout studio is a different thing from a white room with the lights turned off. The walls absorb light differently. The floor absorbs differently. The sense of depth you get in the frame is different. And the technical control you have over every photon in the space is dramatically greater.

I've been building a list of these spaces in London for the past two years. Here's what I've found.

Why black studios are technically useful, not just aesthetic

When you shoot in a white studio, you're managing bounce. Every light source you put up reflects off the walls, the ceiling, the floor, and comes back into the frame as fill light. That's often useful — it gives e-commerce shoots that soft even look. But if you're trying to create a specific light quality on a dark product, control a single dramatic beam, or shoot a beauty sequence where the contrast is the whole point, that ambient fill is your enemy.

In a dark-walled room, the walls absorb rather than reflect. You get close to 'pure' light — only the light you deliberately put into the scene contributes to the exposure. That means a single Profoto B10 Plus at 500Ws aimed through a small modifier gives you exactly the quality and direction of light you specified. Nothing extra. No stray fill from the north wall you forgot about.

The control is significant for certain product categories. A dark glass whisky bottle photographed in a white studio needs a lot of flagging to stop the interior from glowing evenly white. The same bottle in a dark room is dramatically easier to light because the background reflections in the glass are naturally dark and you're controlling the key source highlight with one carefully positioned strip box.

69 Drops Studios

One of the most consistently recommended black studios in London. Full blackout space with black floors and walls — Aldgate East tube, about six minutes walk. That's central enough that talent arriving from anywhere in Zone 1 or 2 can get there without a car, which matters on production days with multiple talent call times.

The studio runs a standard black photo backdrop and has equipment for hire within the space. Genuinely useful for music video production, fashion, product work. The Aldgate area has improved considerably as a location over the past three years and there are decent cafes and restaurant options nearby for client hospitality without needing to leave the area.

Rates are at the mid-range of what you'd expect for a London black studio — check their current hire rates directly, they update them more frequently than most. The half-day rate is typically the most cost-effective booking window for the kind of controlled-light product work this space suits.

Cineview Studios

A fully customisable blackout space with what they describe as 'complete lighting control'. Centrally located, free parking — a combination that's rarer in London than it should be. Available for both half-day and full-day hire.

The all-black studio at Cineview is specifically built for production work — music video, commercial photography, product shoots. The 'all-black' spec means floors, walls and ceiling, which is the complete version. Studios that only have black walls but a light ceiling are better than nothing but the ceiling bounce can still be a problem with overhead sources.

Worth checking the specific power supply at Cineview for your kit list — free parking suggests an out-of-centre location, which usually means more generous power infrastructure than Zone 1 converted-building studios. Call ahead and ask about circuit capacity if you're bringing HMI or large LED arrays.

Blackout Studio (via Hire Space and others)

This is more of a studio-type category than a single venue — there are several 'Blackout Studio' branded spaces across London with similar specs: black floor, black walls, black ceiling, integrated kitchen and makeup area, production room. The spec is clean and the setup is designed for photography and film production rather than events.

The consistency of the black finish matters. Ask whether the walls are painted matte black (good) or fabric-covered (also good, better acoustic treatment) or just very dark-coloured walls (not really the same thing). Some studios market themselves as blackout spaces and deliver a dark grey that reflects enough in certain lighting setups to create unwanted fill. If total absorption is important to your brief, ask to see unlit photos of the space.

FUJIFILM House of Photography

Long Acre, Covent Garden. Interesting location because it's one of the most central studio options in London, which makes client and talent logistics easy. The studio itself offers blackout capability and soundproofed walls with two lockable doors — the lockable-door spec is specifically useful for production days with commercially sensitive product (luxury goods, unreleased product photography, anything NDA-bound).

Being in Covent Garden means the hire rates are London central rates. You're paying for the postcode as well as the studio, and that's a legitimate trade-off if your client or talent is central and the alternative is a 45-minute van ride to a cheaper East London space. For a two-hour controlled product shoot with a client in attendance, the convenience is worth more than the rate difference.

What to check in any dark studio

Floor finish

Matte black floors are hard to maintain in a hire studio. They show dust, scuffs and footprints at a rate that white floors conceal. A studio that's been run well will sweep and mop between bookings; a studio run carelessly will have a floor that introduces an unwanted texture into your product shots at floor level. Ask when the floor was last cleaned. Ask for a recent photo. Sounds paranoid — isn't.

Ceiling absorption

As mentioned above, a black studio with a light ceiling is only partially a black studio. The ceiling bounce from a large overhead source can create an ambient fill that undermines the controlled-light quality you're booking the space for. A fully matte black ceiling at 4 metres absorbs rather than reflects; a light-coloured ceiling at 4 metres bounces.

Power and circuit layout

Dark studios attract lighting setups that are more power-intensive than average. A Godox AD600 with a deep parabolic reflector, a strip box hairlight on a C-stand, and a background kicker — these all draw simultaneously. Ask the same power questions you'd ask any studio: how many independent circuits, what's the maximum draw per circuit, is there a 16A or 32A socket available for larger loads.

Changing and prep space

In black studios it's particularly important that the changing and makeup area is separate from the shooting space, because running any hair or makeup work in the studio itself risks contaminating the controlled light environment with hairdryer heat, a mirror positioned wrong, or someone turning the overhead on briefly to check a look.

Rates for black studios in London

Central London black studios run approximately £120–£250 per hour. East London equivalents in Hackney, Whitechapel and Bermondsey are slightly lower — £90–£180 per hour. Full-day hire of a properly spec'd black studio typically ranges from £600–£1,400 depending on location and what's included.

These are higher than equivalent-sized white studios at the same location. The premium for the black finish, the acoustic treatment that usually accompanies it, and the more limited booking demand (fewer clients book dark studios than white ones) is legitimate.

The brief that suits a dark studio

Luxury product — watches, spirits, cosmetics, leather goods — where the creative direction calls for a dark atmospheric treatment and the product is a light source or reflective surface. Menswear and dark-palette fashion where a white background would bleach the colour out of the clothing. Beauty photography with dramatic lighting ratios. Music video production. Anything where the primary light quality is a single-source beam rather than a fully filled ambient environment.

If your brief is a standard e-commerce catalogue day, a dark studio is not the right call — you'd spend the day fighting the room rather than using it. But for the briefs that need it, a well-maintained black studio in London is one of the most precise shooting environments you can hire.
