Spent about three weeks last autumn hunting for a proper blackout studio within reach of Southampton. Not a room with heavy curtains. Not a space where you can "achieve blackout with a bit of effort." A studio where you walk in, shut the door, and the ambient light reading on your incident meter is zero.

There are two that actually deliver. And then a few that almost get there — which is worse than being nowhere close, because you don't find out until your first take.

Who actually needs blackout — and who doesn't

Not every shoot does. If you're doing natural light portraits or e-commerce product on a white background with a window as your key, blackout isn't on your checklist. But the moment you want total control over your artificial sources, ambient contamination becomes the thing that decides whether the day works or doesn't.

I shoot a lot of product video. Dark, moody content. The kind where you've got a single Aputure 600d Pro shaped through a large diffusion frame, and that light needs to be the only light in the image. Even the tiniest window bleed shows up in the grade. Sometimes as a hot corner. Sometimes as a colour temperature shift from 5600K to something warmer that takes an hour to fix in post. Not ideal when a client is sitting next to the monitor asking questions.

Blackout is also non-negotiable for anything with screens in frame — monitor displays, LED panels embedded in a set build, any product that has a lit interface. If ambient light can hit the screen surface, you're either overexposing the room or underexposing the display. Neither works.

Green screen with mixed artificial and natural light is the other classic case. Uneven exposure across your chroma key backdrop creates edge spill that no keying plug-in fully fixes. You end up rotoscoping. Nobody wants to rotoscope.

The third use case I see most is dark fashion content — that particular aesthetic where you're working with a single rim light, deep shadow, controlled specular highlights on skin or texture. It only works when you've removed every variable except the ones you intended. A room with semi-blackout curtains and a skylight you don't control will let you down at 2pm when the clouds lift and your modifiers are dialled tight.

VideoFrog Studios — Winchester

This is the place I keep going back to. It's in Winchester — roughly equidistant between Southampton and Basingstoke — and it's purpose-built. Not a converted barn unit with black paint. Not a photography school's equipment store with the shelves pushed back. Actually designed and built as a production studio.

The blackout space runs to 64 square metres: 8 by 8 metres, ceiling at 2.6 metres at the lowest point. The infinity curve is 8 metres wide and built in black — a proper radiused floor-to-wall join with no visible gap, not painted-black emulsion over a foam fillet that chips within a month. Below a 2.6m ceiling you can still fly a light on a low-boy stand, but you're not getting serious overhead clearance with a large diffusion frame above it. If your rig involves an Arri SkyPanel S60-C at full extension on a high-roller, have that conversation before you book.

It comes pre-lit with a three-point setup on arrival. The grid runs Fresnel, fluorescent, and LED options — enough for a working base exposure without importing your own lighting pack on a lighter shoot. They've also run an independent clean power supply off a separate circuit for cameras and lighting. That matters in practice: a standard 13A ring main in the UK handles roughly 3kW before you start tripping breakers. Two Godox AD600s at full power, a couple of monitor screens, a laptop, and a stylist running hair tools off a shared socket will clear that figure easily. The clean circuit keeps sensitive gear away from noise and load spikes on the general supply.

Full soundproofing on acoustic mounts. Air conditioning. Free on-site parking — useful when you're loading in from a transit van. Pricing isn't listed on the website; call 01962 870408. For a purpose-built 64 sqm with this level of fit-out in Hampshire, a reasonable bracket is roughly £75–£100/hr, though that's inference rather than a confirmed rate. Call them and get the actual number before building your budget.

There's also a 4-metre-wide chroma green option with green vinyl floor, which means you can flip between blackout and green screen setups in the same booking. If your brief covers a dark product video and a green screen talking head on the same day, doing both in one room saves a location change and a second rigging job.

Zealous Media — Southampton

Different setup entirely. Zealous Media is primarily a video production company, and their studio was built around their own production workflow — which is actually an advantage, because the space has been specced for real commercial shoots rather than to pass a generic listing checklist.

The overhead lighting grid is substantial. Lights on pantographs, which means you can position overhead sources precisely without importing C-stands and angling them up from the floor. There's a generous pull-back area at the rear for longer lens coverage — useful for anything where you need the camera 10-plus metres from the subject. And because the team running it understands production, you get real answers to technical questions. Ask about floor weight tolerance or whether the space can handle dolly and track, and you'll get a spec rather than a guess.

The catch: they don't run open hourly bookings. Half-day or full-day rates, pricing by enquiry, and you'll have a conversation with their team before anything gets confirmed. For a solo photographer needing three hours to shoot some product — not the right fit. For a full commercial day with a four-person crew, multiple lighting setups, and a proper load-in, it makes sense.

The spec questions I ask every blackout studio before committing

I've asked these often enough now that they come out in the same order every time. Not to be difficult — just because I've turned up at two studios, one in Southampton and one in Park Royal, where "blackout" meant something quite different to what I'd assumed from the listing.

First: can they photograph the room with all external light blocked and all studio lights off? A proper blackout room shows nothing but sensor noise in a long exposure at ISO 6400. If they say they'll check and come back to you, that tells you what you need to know.

Second: what's the power setup — specifically, are lights on the same circuit as general sockets? A dedicated circuit for lighting equipment means no voltage spike on-set when someone switches the kettle on in the adjacent kitchen. The VideoFrog clean supply matters here.

Third: ceiling height vs. rig height. The 2.6m ceiling at VideoFrog is a real constraint for certain overhead rigs — know this before you build your lighting plan, not after you arrive with a large frame that won't fit.

Fourth: floor surface. Painted concrete? Vinyl? Textured tile? For overhead product photography, the floor is your backdrop. For low-angle video, it's in frame the whole time. Knowing what it looks like saves you bringing a floor cover you didn't need, or realising too late you needed one you didn't bring.

Fifth: ventilation. A tightly sealed blackout room with a full lighting rig pumping out heat gets uncomfortable within an hour. VideoFrog has air conditioning. Some Hampshire spaces claiming blackout do not. That's a real operational difference on a summer booking with a full crew and a styling team adding to the ambient temperature.

Sixth: load-in door dimensions. Obvious, but often forgotten. A perfect blackout studio accessible only through a standard 80cm door becomes a nightmare if you're shifting flight cases, modifiers, and a prop rail through it. Ask the width and height of the loading entrance before you commit.

The Portsmouth gap

Portsmouth is the obvious hole in the Hampshire market. For anyone based south of the M27 — Portsmouth, Chichester, Havant — there's no purpose-built blackout studio with an infinity curve within a short drive. There are general photo studios in Portsmouth with capable curtains that can get close, but "close" on a critical video shoot is often not close enough.

If you're Portsmouth-based and shooting blackout regularly, you're either driving 45 minutes to Winchester, calling Zealous Media in Southampton, or occasionally heading to London. Which isn't as costly as it sounds once you compare full-day rates properly.

Hampshire vs London — the actual numbers

London has more and better blackout options per postcode. That's just true. But a full-day dark-studio shoot in London — studio hire, parking for a transit van, a zone-crossing production vehicle permit — adds up in ways that Hampshire doesn't. Even a reasonably priced south London studio in Deptford or Peckham costs differently from a Hampshire day once you factor in M25 travel time on both ends of the booking.

For most south-coast briefs, the Hampshire option covers 80% of what London offers at a meaningfully different effective day rate. For complex multi-setup days where rig height matters — a proper cyc with 4.5m-plus ceiling, 3-phase power, specialist kit — you're probably heading to London anyway. But for a focused one-van crew shooting dark product or controlled fashion content, Winchester or Southampton handles it well.

The honest comparison: a full Hampshire production day including studio, parking, and crew catering from a local supplier will often come in £400–£600 under the equivalent London booking. Over a year of regular dark-studio work, that's a meaningful number.

What else exists in the region

Beyond VideoFrog and Zealous Media, the Hampshire market is thin for dedicated blackout. There are a handful of spaces on Scouty and similar platforms that describe themselves as capable of blackout — some legitimately, some optimistically. Always ask for the darkness test photograph before you book anything you haven't visited.

There's a drive-in blackout photography and film studio listed in Southampton on Scouty with high ceilings and a reported large loading door — useful if you're moving big props or furniture. Worth a look if your brief needs drive-in access rather than just pedestrian load-in.

Day rate vs hourly in Hampshire studios

One thing I've noticed about blackout studios specifically: hourly rates rarely work in your favour unless the studio is genuinely sized for short bookings. Rigging and de-rigging in a dark room takes longer than in a standard white studio — there are fewer visual references, cable runs are harder to see, and you'll spend time you didn't plan on adjusting your metering to account for the fact that your usual exposure guesses don't transfer.

Budget a minimum half-day for any blackout booking where you're bringing your own lighting. Three hours sounds like plenty in the planning. On the day, with load-in, a lighting test, a camera test, and actual shooting, it often isn't. I've left two Hampshire bookings running over by an hour each — once at VideoFrog, once at a studio in Basingstoke that's since closed — simply because the blackout rigging took 40 minutes longer than I'd planned. A half-day buffer removes that stress.
