The first time I drove past three Woking streets of full parking at half seven in the morning, dragging a pelican case and two C-stand bags to a freight lift that smelled of diesel, I thought: there has to be a better way to do this. Turns out there is. It just doesn't get talked about enough.

This whole stretch of southern England — Hampshire, Surrey — is actually decent for blackout studio hire. Not "decent for outside London." Decent, full stop.

The problem is most photographers don't know where to look. They default to the London booking platforms, filter for Zone 2, and then complain about parking. So let me run through what's actually available and what to watch for.

Why blackout spec matters — and what to actually verify

A blackout studio gives you full light control. No window bleed, no time-of-day constraints, no chasing clouds. For product work, film, music videos, or anything where you're building a lit set from scratch, it's the spec you need.

But the phrase gets used loosely — some spaces say "blackout capable" and mean they've got some curtains that droop a bit. So when you're enquiring, ask specifically. Do the curtains reach the floor? Is there a gap at the top of the door? What's the lux reading at the walls when everything's shut? A proper blackout drops you close to zero ambient. If the studio can't answer that question, that tells you something.

Also worth asking: how does the loading access work relative to the blackout? If the main door opens directly into the shoot space and breaks the blackout every time a runner goes out for coffee, you'll spend the day managing traffic rather than shooting.

Winchester and the M3 corridor

Winchester is underrated as a base for Surrey and Hampshire shoots. It's about 70 minutes from Waterloo, has cheap parking by London standards, and there are a couple of spaces worth knowing about.

Videofrog Studios runs a blackout space in the Winchester and Southampton corridor. One thing I like about it: the space is pre-lit, so if you're already renting strobes separately you can sometimes streamline your setup. They work across video and stills. Worth calling ahead to confirm blackout completeness — their number's on the site — because like most regional studios they update availability by phone rather than through an online calendar.

Zealous Media Winchester also offers blackout capability for photography and film. The key here is lead time: their blackout configuration involves prep work, so don't assume you can roll in same-week. Book ahead. They're set up primarily for commercial clients who need a proper controlled environment, not a curtained bedroom.

Neither studio lists hourly rates publicly. This is quite normal outside London, where most studio operators prefer to quote based on the specific shoot requirements rather than post a flat figure. Build in a conversation — not just an email ping — before you commit travel logistics.

Guildford and Woking: the industrial option

Guildford and Woking sit in a useful triangle with London. Close enough to the M25 for easy kit transport, but cheaper than renting inside the Overground. I've spoken to commercial photographers who use this corridor regularly for clients who want "London adjacent" shoots without London costs.

The catch: Guildford and Woking don't have a huge number of purpose-built photography studios. What you tend to find is production company space, hired event space rigged for shoots, or warehouse units adapted for occasional hire. These can work brilliantly — but vet them properly.

Ask about power before anything else. Whether they're running 13A throughout or whether there's a 32A or three-phase feed into the set area matters a lot if you're putting multiple big lights up. A space that's never hosted a professional lighting rig often has completely standard domestic sockets. Running a pair of Aputure 600d Pros — 720W draw each, comparable to a 1200W HMI — off 13A circuits means you're tripping breakers before you've even set a white balance.

And while we're on power: ask where the consumer unit is and who has the key. I've been on shoots where a tripped breaker meant 20 minutes of someone phoning the building manager. Not ideal mid-brief.

Granary Digital, near Chichester

Slightly further south than the Guildford triangle but genuinely worth flagging: Granary Digital, based near Chichester in West Sussex, runs a 5.3m × 7.1m infinity cove with full blackout. That's a proper cove — large enough for a car, large enough to build a product set with room to move. They also have a rain rig on site, which I've only seen in a handful of regional studios. And they're explicit about pricing at regional rates rather than London ones.

It's about 90 minutes by road from central London, so it's not a simple city-to-studio swap if your crew is coming from Dalston. But for a two-day hire where the maths factors in accommodation anyway, or for clients based on the south coast, it's worth putting in a quote request.

What to ask every blackout studio — before you commit to travel

A quick checklist that saves aggravation:

What's the usable shooting floor size (not the room dimensions)?
Can the loading door access the set area without breaking the blackout seal?
What's the power supply to the set — 13A, 16A, 32A, or three-phase?
Is there a pre-light or pack-down window included, or does the clock start at call time?
Do they provide dimmable sockets or is it hard on/off?
Can you bring your own kit, or is there a mandatory house equipment rental?

That last question about dimming trips people up. If you want to balance a Profoto B10 at 250Ws against a background light at quarter power, you need the flash units to be independently controllable — which you'll manage through the flash transmitter — but for continuous sources, fixed-power sockets mean you're gelling or adding diffusion instead of just dialling down.

Regional rates vs London: what to actually expect

The studios I've mentioned above don't post public rates, which is normal. But the directional comparison is real. An equivalent-spec blackout space in Hackney Wick or Park Royal — good cove, solid power, professional load-in — typically starts from around £150 per hour or upward for the better-equipped places. Regional studios in Surrey and Hampshire generally come in lower, though the gap narrows for the most professionally fitted-out spaces.

The saving is most apparent on full-day bookings. If you're hiring for eight to ten hours, the difference between London and regional can offset a significant part of your crew's travel costs — which brings me to the hidden variable.

The indirect costs nobody mentions

Travel time is real money. A crew of three driving from Shoreditch to Winchester adds 90 minutes each way — minimum — for kit loading and transit. That's effectively losing part of your productive shoot window. Factor that into the cost comparison properly, not just the studio line item.

But parking usually swings back in your favour. On a multi-van shoot day in London, you're spending £40–60 in parking alone, often across multiple vehicles if you can't find a bay close enough to load in conveniently. Regional studios almost universally have free on-site parking, sometimes directly into the building. On a one-day shoot with two kit vans, that's not nothing.

Power spec for a real blackout rig

To give you a sense of what a blackout production rig actually draws: on a product and video day, I'll typically run a pair of Godox AD600 Pros as the main strobe units, a Profoto B10 as a rim or kicker light for detail shots, and two Aputure 600d Pros for continuous output during any video sections of the brief. The AD600 Pros run off internal battery so no socket worries there. But the two Aputures together are pulling around 1,400W of draw from mains. That needs two separate 16A circuits minimum — or ideally a 32A feed split at the board.

Ask the studio for their power drawing documentation. A studio that's been used for serious production will have this. One that hasn't won't know the question.

Autumn availability: book now

September to December is peak period for commercial shoots in the UK. Daylight shortens, outdoor location options shrink, and clients who've been putting off their product photography since July suddenly need it done by November. Blackout studios get booked out — particularly those with a proper cove or a drive-in bay.
