Brand photography briefs are the ones that catch you out. On paper they look manageable — a few product shots, some people using the product, maybe a lifestyle scene or two. The spec looks like a normal commercial day. Then you arrive in a studio designed for cyclorama work and spend the first hour rearranging borrowed furniture to make a lifestyle corner that half works.

Brand shoots have different space requirements than product photography, fashion, or straight portraiture. Understanding that before you book saves a lot of on-set problem-solving.

What brand photography actually involves

A typical brand campaign brief involves multiple visual contexts. There's the product on its own — clean, controlled, probably on a white or light-toned background. There's the product in use — with a person, in a setting that suggests how the brand wants to be perceived. And there are the detail and texture shots that give the design team options: close-up packaging, material shots, environmental context.

The "in use" element is where studio choice matters most. Creating a credible lifestyle environment in a studio requires either a well-designed set, a studio that has one pre-built, or significant set dressing that you're bringing yourself. Most photography studios have none of these things. They have white walls and a cyc floor, which is perfect for product isolation and useless for a lifestyle scene.

The multi-set problem

Brand days often require multiple looks. The brief might need three or four distinct visual environments: a kitchen context for cooking-adjacent products, a desk or workspace feel for B2B brands, a lounge or bedroom scene for lifestyle brands, and a clean studio backdrop for the product-isolated shots. Getting all of these in a single studio day is possible — but only if the room is large enough to have zones that don't have to share lighting infrastructure.

The minimum floor area I want for a brand shoot with three or more distinct setups is 80–100sqm. Less than that and you're either rebuilding between every setup (which eats into shooting time) or compromising on how complete each set is. Rebuilding a kitchen corner into a desk corner into a clean backdrop in a 50sqm room is possible. It takes forty minutes each time and the results look slightly rushed because there wasn't space to dress the set properly.

Larger rooms — 150sqm and above — let you leave two or three zones set up simultaneously and rotate through them during the day. That's the efficient way to shoot a brand brief. You're not tearing down between every setup; you're moving the camera. The difference in pace is significant and the results show it.

Studios with lifestyle sets built in

A growing number of UK studios specifically serve the brand and content photography market. They've invested in pre-built lifestyle sets — kitchen corners with working appliances, living room zones with proper furniture, desk setups with functional monitors. These spaces are more expensive per hour than a plain photography studio, but the value calculation changes when you factor in what you'd spend dressing a comparable set yourself.

Furniture hire for a kitchen scene can run £200–£400 for a full day. Plant hire, tableware, textiles — the set dressing budget for a brand shoot lifestyle scene adds up quickly. A studio that has the scene already built and photographed well isn't charging for nothing when it asks an extra £30–£50/hr on top of a plain-studio rate.

In London, the strongest concentration of lifestyle-set studios is around Dalston, Hackney, and parts of Bermondsey. Several Hackney Wick studios have invested in set infrastructure specifically to serve the creator and brand photography market. In Manchester, the Northern Quarter has a comparable cluster.

People and product — the logistics problem

Brand shoots that involve talent — models, brand ambassadors, real people as subjects — add a logistical layer that the room needs to support. Hair and makeup must happen somewhere. The talent needs a space to change. Brand representatives and art directors need somewhere to sit and see frames without being in the shooting zone.

This is where dedicated studio facilities make a difference. A studio with a proper green room, a makeup station with good mirror and lighting access, a client area with a monitor feed, and a clear physical separation between the prep area and the shooting floor runs entirely differently from a studio where the makeup is happening on a folding table two metres from the main light.

For a brand day with three or more people on call, I need: makeup station with mirror and daylight-balanced lamp, a changing area or room with some privacy, a client seating area with a monitor feed or at least a clearly designated "not in the shooting zone" space, and toilets accessible without walking through the shooting area. Natural light vs. controlled strobe for brand work

Brand photography tends to favour a softer, more naturalistic look than advertising product photography. The look the client usually wants for their "people using our product" shots is the kind of light that reads as real — warm, directional, with soft shadows. That's achievable with natural window light (if north or east facing) or with a large light source positioned to mimic it.

For this reason, some of the best brand photography studios in the UK are daylight-hybrid rooms — large windows on the north or east face, plus the ability to add or substitute continuous LED when the natural light isn't working. Rates for brand-appropriate studios

Studios that are genuinely equipped for brand and lifestyle photography — meaning they have set infrastructure, proper facilities, and enough floor space — typically run at the higher end of the market. In London: £110–£180/hr, or £500–£900 for a full day. In Manchester: £75–£120/hr, or £350–£600 for a day with facilities. These are the studios that have invested in being brand-ready.

There's a middle tier of photography studios that work for brand days with additional set dressing and careful planning: £80–£120/hr in London, £55–£85/hr in Manchester. These rooms often have a lifestyle zone or two but not a complete setup for every scene in a typical brief.

The plain photography studio tier — cyc and white walls, basic kit — typically doesn't serve brand briefs well unless the brand's visual language is specifically clean and minimal. For cosmetics brands doing product isolation work, it's fine. For food and lifestyle brands that need any environmental context, it's a starting point that requires significant supplementary spend.

What to tell the studio when you enquire

Be specific. Tell the studio the number of distinct setup zones you need, whether you need talent facilities and how many people, whether you're bringing set dressing or need the room to supply it, and the nature of the brand and visual language. A studio that understands the brief will tell you quickly whether they can support it or not. One that doesn't understand the brief will tell you yes regardless and leave you to discover the gaps on the day.
