I once turned down a car shoot because the studio ceiling was 3.2 metres. The client's producer told me I was being difficult. The creative director later called to say he was glad I'd flagged it, because the follow-up agency had booked a different space and the bonnet reflections were a mess — visible ceiling lights in every specular highlight, nothing post could cleanly remove. That call cost me three days of awkwardness and earned me a six-month campaign contract. Spec-checking before a car booking pays off.

Here's what I actually check, and why each bit matters more than the listing description usually suggests.

Floor width is the spec the listing gets wrong

Photographers agonise over ceiling height — and ceiling height matters, I'll get to it — but floor width is what kills most car shoots in the planning stage. A standard UK family saloon is around 1.9m wide. An SUV or crossover sits at 2.0–2.1m. A Range Rover Sport is 2.07m including mirrors. Slot that into a cyclorama and add the space you actually need either side for lighting: minimum 2m per side if you're running a large octabox or an Arri SkyPanel S60-C on a boom. You're at 6–7m of usable width before you've added any distance behind the camera, any dolly track, or any grip hardware on the approach side.

A useful car photography floor is at least 10m wide. Ideally 12–15m. Some studios advertise "suitable for cars" with a 6m floor. That works for a Mini. It won't work for a full-size SUV with lighting positions that aren't pressed against the wall.

Cineview Studios in London operates a 10×10m cyclorama at 5.8m ceiling height with proper drive-in access — that's a credible working minimum for most briefs. Sugar Studios' infinity cove in London is 1,580 square feet, which gives more room to move. When checking any studio listing, look for the floor dimensions of the actual shooting space rather than the total room area. Some studios quote the full room including prep areas. The cyc floor width is the number you need.

Ceiling height: why 4.5m is the number

There's a full post on this elsewhere on this site, so the short version: below 4.5m, the ceiling starts showing in bonnet, roof and windscreen reflections. At 3.8m it's manageable — aggressive flagging, careful head positions. At 3.2m it's a production problem, not just an aesthetic one. You're fighting the space rather than working with it.

Cars are enormous mirrors. Everything in the environment above and around them is going to show somewhere on the surface. A low white ceiling becomes a giant flat soft source in every specular highlight on the car's roofline. You can flag it, you can use blackout cloth, you can position the car carefully — but below 4m you're spending grip time on ceiling management that could be spent on the shoot.

4.5m is the pragmatic floor. 5m gives you comfortable overhead rig positions and the flexibility to hang Arri SkyPanels from a truss without running out of height. Cineview's 5.8m is genuinely usable without compromise. Anything below 4m is a conversation, not a confirmation.

The drive-in question that should be obvious but isn't

You cannot photograph a car in a studio you can't drive the car into. That sounds too obvious to need saying. And yet I've seen booking conversations run for a week before someone checked the loading door height. Standard loading doors in converted warehouse units are often 2.5–2.8m — fine for a Golf, tight for a Range Rover at 1.97m roofline, impossible for a van or a 4×4 with a roof rack or bull bar.

Ask for the door dimensions in millimetres: width and height specifically. Then ask about the approach — is it flat to the studio floor, or is there a ramp? Is there a threshold step? What's the surface between the loading apron and the cyc floor? I've had a press fleet car pick up sill marks from a rough concrete approach before the first frame was shot. Not a great start to a commercial relationship.

Cineview's loading access is designed with vehicles in mind. That's the reference point. When you're checking any other studio, "drive-in access" on the listing can mean almost anything, and only specific answers to specific questions confirm it means what you need.

Power: 3-phase is not a nice-to-have

Automotive commercial work runs big heads. An Arri SkyPanel S360-C overhead pulls 2,000W at full output. A pair of Profoto Pro-11 packs adds another 2,200W. HMI 4K fixtures for fill, continuous practicals on the set, a tethering station running two monitors — the draw adds up quickly and hits 100-amp 3-phase territory before you've switched on the kettle.

Ask the studio: what's the maximum draw in the shooting space, and is it 3-phase or single-phase? What are the circuit breaker ratings? Is there a location power distro box available, and if not, what's the connection spec for bringing your own? Studios with real automotive production experience can answer these questions immediately. Studios that say "we have plenty of power" without quoting a number are the ones to chase for specifics before you commit.

A single-phase 32-amp supply will run a modest photography setup — a couple of Godox AD600B packs, some Aputure 120d heads, a modest tethering station. That's fine for a small product car shoot. It won't support a full automotive commercial with a gaffer department and multiple large HMI sources. Know what your brief requires and match it against what the studio actually has.

Floor surface and condition

Polished concrete is the preference. Hard-wearing, shows reflections cleanly, doesn't mark easily under tyre contact. Epoxy-painted concrete floors can work — but they sometimes cast colour under certain lighting temperatures, and some epoxy finishes are slippery enough that moving the car on the floor is a grip problem. Sprung wood floors are generally a non-starter for car work: the flex under concentrated load, they scratch under slow tyre movement, and they rarely survive a press fleet car being repositioned four or five times without visible marks.

Ask specifically about the floor condition on the date you're booking, not in general terms. Studios that host portrait and fashion work between car bookings can end up with scuffed or marked floors that nobody has bothered to polish. Some studios do a standard pre-car-shoot floor prep; others leave that to the crew. Know which situation you're walking into before the client's press car arrives.

Turntables: useful, not universal

Not every car shoot needs a turntable. But for any brief requiring consistent angular positions without rebuilding the lighting setup — think 360-degree hero shots, multiple-position comparison images, or anything where the car needs to rotate while the camera stays put — a mechanical turntable saves significant time and prevents the accidental lighting inconsistencies that come from repositioning manually.

Some London studios have turntables built into the cyc floor. Others hire them in. A motorised turntable hire typically runs £300–£600 per day depending on the specification and the rental company. Factor that into your budget upfront rather than discovering the need on the prep day. And if the studio doesn't have one and can't source one at the right price, building a simple mechanical turntable from scaffold board and casters is sometimes the pragmatic call for a static-look series where you only need three or four positions.

Black vs white cyclorama for car work

The wrong answer here is "white, because car shots are usually on white". Both have real use cases. A black cyclorama gives you total control — you build light from zero and only put into the frame what you choose. The car's surfaces reflect only the sources you've designed. A white cyclorama wraps the car in ambient fill from the outset, which speeds up simple clean-background commercial setups but makes it harder to control the quality of reflections on complex surfaces.

Some studios have both — a white cyc and a separate black space. That flexibility is worth paying for on a complex brief where the creative direction requires different setups across the shoot day. Single-option studios can be right for the brief that needs only one of them. Know before you book.

The pre-booking call

For any serious automotive brief I make a direct phone call to the studio before submitting a booking request. I ask about the door dimensions, the power spec, the floor condition, and whether they've hosted car shoots before. That last question isn't gatekeeping — studios that haven't done car work before can still be the right venue — but the answer tells me how detailed my follow-up questions need to be.

A studio that says "yes, we've hosted automotive press work before" and then answers questions about 3-phase supply and loading door heights confidently is worth booking. A studio that says "yes" and then can't answer specifics is worth more investigation before you put a press car and a production crew in there.

Specialist car studios outside London

The best car photography studios in the UK cluster in London. That's just the reality. But there are options elsewhere. The Midlands — particularly in the Birmingham and Coventry corridor — has a handful of large commercial studio complexes that handle automotive press work for the nearby manufacturers. These tend to operate through direct relationships with ad agencies and press fleet managers rather than public booking platforms. If you need a Midlands car studio, a call to the commercial photography community in Birmingham will surface names that don't appear in any directory.

Manchester has spaces that will accommodate vehicles — I've heard solid reports from north-west based commercial photographers. For a London crew, the travel overhead of a Manchester car studio booking rarely makes sense unless the shoot has other reasons to be in the north. For a crew based in the north-west it's worth investigating.

Outside London and the Midlands, the practical alternative to a purpose-built car studio is a large, clean, dry industrial unit with sufficient ceiling height and floor area — a motorsport facility, a large warehouse unit with epoxy floor, a clear-span agricultural building — rigged with hired-in lighting infrastructure. Some photographers work this way by preference and like the result: total control over the environment, no existing aesthetic to fight, often cheaper per day than a dedicated London studio. The setup time and logistics cost is the trade-off. Not for every brief, but it's a real option when the brief is flexible enough and the studio options don't fit.

One more thing: the sill height

Last thing I always check — and it's the one that gets skipped most often. What is the sill height of the loading door? Not just the total door height, but the height from the external approach surface to the interior studio floor. Some converted buildings have a small step or a concrete lip that's not a problem for a van but will scrape the underside of a low sports car before it's fully into the room. A 20mm lip under an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio with 100mm of ground clearance is a problem you don't want to discover with the client watching.

Ask about it. Studios that know their space will answer immediately. It's a thirty-second question that can save a very bad moment on a booking day.
