Children's fashion e-commerce photography is a completely different brief from adult catalogue work, and most photography studios aren't built for it. The floor's wrong, the schedule's wrong, the changing area is wrong, and the legal framework — specifically around employing child models — is different in ways that require planning before the shoot day, not during it.

I've produced five children's fashion shoot days in UK studios over the past three years. This is what I know now that I didn't know before the first one.

The licensing requirement you can't ignore

Under the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 (which updated the 1933 legislation governing child employment), commercial photography work involving paid child models constitutes employment, and specific local authority requirements apply. In England, this means:

Children under 14 face a general bar on employment, subject to specific regulations — which means checking your local authority's current guidance on whether a modelling engagement falls under an exemption for regulated entertainment work.
Where a performance licence or permit is required, this must come from the relevant local council before the shoot day. It cannot be obtained on the day.
A child who is not accompanied by a parent or guardian must have a council-approved chaperone present throughout. This is not optional.
Working hours are restricted — children cannot work before 7am or after 8pm, and school-day working is subject to weekly hour caps.

The practical implication: contact the local authority in the borough where the studio is located, not where the child lives, at least two weeks before the shoot. The requirements vary between authorities. Some have a straightforward notification process; others require full licence applications with lead times. Leaving this until the week before is how you end up cancelling a shoot.

I'd also strongly recommend checking with the modelling agency (or with parents directly, for non-agency children) that their consent covers commercial e-commerce use with specific reference to online retail channels. A general model release isn't always sufficient if the images will appear in paid advertising across platforms.

Floor spec: the thing that determines how the day goes

Children move differently from adults. A studio floor that's fine for an adult model walking in heels is a problem when a four-year-old is running between setups on polished concrete in socked feet. And unlike adult models, children — especially younger ones — spend a lot of the non-shooting time sitting or lying on the floor, playing with toys in the holding area, or moving around the studio between takes.

The floor spec I look for on a children's e-comm booking:

Warm surface: Cold vinyl or polished concrete is genuinely uncomfortable for a child who's going to spend eight hours in a studio. Heated floors or a foam play area in the holding zone are worth asking about explicitly.
Non-slip surface in the shooting area: Seamless paper on polished concrete under young children is a real slip risk. A rubber-backed vinyl or matted shooting surface is safer and easier to clean.
Cleanable: Children's fashion shoots involve snacks, drinks and the general entropy of small humans. A studio floor that can be quickly cleaned between setups without specialist equipment saves time and avoids charging.

Changing area requirements

A children's e-comm shoot with a dozen outfits across a full day involves a lot of changing — and children change more slowly, with more assistance required, than adult models. The changing area spec:

Private, enclosed space — not a curtained corner of the main studio
Child-height hanging rail plus an adult-height one
A full-length mirror at a height that works for children, not just for adults
Space for a parent or guardian to assist (this is not optional — an accompanying adult is part of the picture)
Temperature: warm. Studios often run cooler than offices because the equipment runs hot. A child undressing between outfits in a cold changing area gets uncomfortable and uncooperative quickly.

The changing area is where most of your schedule slippage happens on a children's shoot. A functional, well-organised changing setup with outfits hung in shoot order recovers time that a cramped, disorganised one loses.

Scheduling: the adult assumptions that break children's shoots

Adult e-comm schedule: fifteen looks in eight hours, with three looks per two-hour block. Fine. A competent adult model and photographer can hit that.

Children's e-comm schedule: budget for half that output with children under eight, and three-quarters with older children. Not because children are difficult — because children get tired, get hungry, need breaks, get distracted, need a parent conversation, and generally cannot be asked to perform on demand the way adult professionals can.

The shoots that go well have these built in:

A play space and entertainment area near but separate from the shooting floor
A dedicated moment each hour for a snack and a break from the set — non-negotiable, not subject to "we're just finishing this look"
A schedule that has flex built in, not a schedule that assumes everything will run on time
A production runner or assistant whose sole job is managing the children's area, separate from the photography assistant's role

Studio location and the arrival logistics

Children's shoots usually involve parents transporting children, which means car parking and load-in matter more than they do for adult shoots. A studio in Shoreditch with no parking and a complicated pedestrian entrance is harder for a parent arriving with a toddler and three bags of shoes than it is for an adult model arriving by Overground.

Studios on industrial estates in east London — Hackney Wick, Tottenham, Park Royal — often have vehicle access and parking that city-centre studios don't. For children's fashion work, I've increasingly found myself booking in these zones rather than the higher-profile central studios, not because the studios are better, but because the arrival logistics work better for the participants.

The studio owner conversation

Not all studio owners have experience with children's shoots, and some are explicitly not set up for them — either because of insurance restrictions, or because they've had difficult experiences with young children and expensive studio equipment in close proximity. It's worth being upfront about the nature of the shoot when you enquire. Ask whether they have experience with children's e-comm work. Ask what their policy on accompanied children is. Ask whether the floor is appropriate.

The studio that's honest about not being right for this brief is more useful to you than the one that says yes to everything and turns out to be a polished-concrete warehouse with no heating and nowhere for children to sit.
