Why children's portrait work has different studio requirements to everything else

Children's portrait sessions aren't just "portrait sessions but smaller." They're their own discipline. The energy in the room is completely different, the shoot rhythm is different, and the studio spec that works beautifully for headshots or product work can actively wreck a children's shoot.

I've done enough of these — school years, birthday portraits, sibling sessions, seasonal mini-sessions — to know which studio details cause problems before the first frame is taken. This post is about those details. The floor. The heat. The parent corner. The ceiling. All of it.

Floor spec: this is non-negotiable

Let's start with the floor because it's the first thing I check on studio viewings, and the thing that catches most photographers out.

If you're shooting toddlers — one to four year olds especially — you want a soft floor surface. Carpet, foam matting, or at minimum a surface that won't cause a nasty scrape when they drop. And they will drop. Repeatedly. With some enthusiasm.

Hard vinyl floors look great in studio photos. They reflect beautifully. They're easy to clean. And for adults or older children who can manage themselves, they're fine. But put a 22-month-old on a cold, hard vinyl floor and two things happen: they're uncomfortable, which shows on their face, and they're reluctant to sit or play freely, which destroys the natural movement you're trying to capture.

I had a session at a studio in Ealing two years ago — a genuinely nice space, great north light, brilliant height — where the floor was polished concrete. Gorgeous for adults. I'd booked it for a toddler sibling session. The little one fell twice in the first ten minutes. Mum was stressed. The older child got nervous. The whole session ran twenty minutes behind and I ended up with a third of the frames I'd planned for.

The fix? I now bring a section of foam gym matting as backup. But I shouldn't have to. Studios that want children's portrait bookings should offer either carpeted shooting areas, interlocking foam flooring in at least part of the space, or a dedicated soft-surface area I can actually work in.

Not every studio needs carpet wall to wall. But having one area — even a 3×3 metre patch — that's not hard and cold makes all the difference.

Temperature: studios are almost always too cold

This one surprises photographers who haven't done much children's work. Adults tolerate a cool studio. Children — especially babies and toddlers, who often strip down to vests and nappy covers for portrait sessions — do not.

The minimum I work to is 21°C. For very young babies I want 23°C. Many studios default to 18–19°C because that's comfortable for adults moving around and not getting sweaty under lights. But it's not comfortable for a six-month-old in a knitted bonnet and nothing else.

Check whether the studio has controllable heating before you book. Not just "is there heating," but "can I actually get this room to 22°C and keep it there?" A lot of converted warehouse spaces and creative studios have heating systems designed to take the edge off rather than properly warm a space. That's a problem in autumn and winter particularly.

Studios in older buildings — a lot of the beautiful exposed-brick spaces in Islington, or the converted mill buildings in south Manchester — bleed heat fast through walls and high ceilings. I've had sessions in November where I'm standing there in a coat between shots trying to keep the room warm enough for the baby. It doesn't work.

So: ask directly. What's the maximum temperature the space can maintain? What's the heating system? And if you can, visit before the day of the session rather than just relying on what the listing says.

Parent waiting areas: what actually helps

Parents don't disappear during children's sessions. They're there. And what you do with them — spatially — affects the session enormously.

The classic mistake is having parents either hovering directly behind the camera or standing awkwardly somewhere in the shooting space where the child keeps breaking to run to them. Neither is ideal. What you need is a clearly defined parent area that's:

Close enough that young children don't feel abandoned
Far enough — or screened enough — that children aren't constantly breaking to run to mum or dad
Comfortable, with actual chairs, not stools
Has somewhere to put a bag and a changing bag

That last point matters more than you'd think. Parents arrive with a lot of stuff. Changing bags, snacks, spare clothes, toys. If there's nowhere obvious to put it, everything ends up scattered around the shooting space and becomes a hazard and a distraction.

A decent parent area doesn't need to be large. A couple of chairs behind a light modifier or a soft screen divider is enough. The point is a defined space. Studios that have actually thought about this — and I've been in a handful in Wimbledon and Richmond that really have — feel completely different to work in. The sessions run better. The kids are calmer. It's not complicated, but it requires the studio to have thought about it at all.

Light: natural versus artificial for children's sessions

Both work. The question is which you can actually control with children in the room.

Natural light from a north-facing window is beautiful for children's portraits. Soft, even, flattering. If the studio has good natural light and the booking is during the day, I'll use it whenever I can. The issue is that natural light changes. A session running ninety minutes can see the light shift significantly — especially in autumn and winter in the UK when the sun moves quickly across the sky.

For studio sessions where I need consistency across a full day of mini-sessions, I use flash. My current go-to is a Profoto B10 Plus (500Ws) with a large octabox — typically 150cm — which gives me a broad, soft light source that's gentle on young skin and doesn't require constant adjustment as the ambient shifts throughout the day.

If budget is tighter or the studio has good ambient, the Aputure 600d Pro (600W LED) is an excellent continuous option. Kids respond better to continuous light than flash because there's no sudden pop — which matters a lot with babies and sensitive toddlers. The trade-off is that you need faster shutter speeds, and the heat output is higher. That can help warm the space, which as I said above is often useful, but it can also dry out the air.

The main thing I look for is whether I can control the ambient light. Skylights are beautiful but if I can't block them when I need to, they're a liability. Studios with blackout blinds on every window give me real flexibility — I can use natural light when it suits and switch to controlled artificial light when I need consistency across the day.

Ceiling height and shooting space

Here's the thing: you don't need a 4-metre ceiling for children's portraits. That spec is for car photography, large product work, e-commerce shoots with complex ceiling rigs. For children, 2.8 metres is absolutely fine — and actually preferable in some ways, because a lower ceiling creates a cosier, less intimidating space for small children.

What you do need is floor space. Children's portrait sessions require more lateral room than adult sessions because kids move. They run. They play. The best frames I've taken of children at work have come from kids completely absorbed in play — rolling on the floor, chasing a toy — not sitting posed on a stool. You need space for that to happen naturally.

I'd say a minimum of 5×5 metres of clear shooting space. 6×6 is better. You also need room for your lighting equipment, a C-stand or two, seamless paper rolls, and the parent area — all without those things impinging on the actual play area. That's a lot of square footage when you add it up.

Studios that are optimally sized for solo headshot work — often a 4×4 metre footprint — can feel genuinely cramped once you add a toddler, two parents, a bag of props, and a full lighting setup. Check the dimensions carefully before you book, and walk the space if you can.

Low-level props and set design

I bring most of my own props. But studios that cater to children's sessions should at minimum have props that work at floor level. Bean bags. Soft blocks. Low crates or benches for older children to perch on.

The high stool and the posing table work for adults. They don't work for a three-year-old. Children's portrait photography happens mostly at floor level — I'm on my knees probably 70% of the session. The set design needs to reflect that.

If a studio has a permanent set, check whether it includes low-level elements. A lot of studio sets are built at adult eye level and need complete reworking for children's work. That's manageable. But know that going in so you can plan your kit list accordingly, rather than arriving and discovering you've got nothing to work with at 60cm height.

How to brief a studio before a children's session

Don't just book and show up. Brief the studio properly.

Look, most studio managers haven't thought through the specific requirements of children's portrait work. They're not being awkward. They just haven't had to. So it's on you to give them a clear brief in advance. Here's what I tell every studio manager before a children's portrait booking:

I need the space at minimum 21°C before I arrive — 22°C if possible
I need confirmation of the floor surface and whether there's a soft area
I need to know where parents typically wait and whether there's comfortable seating
I want details on any fixed sets or props at low level
I need confirmation that ambient light can be fully blocked if needed

Most studio managers respond well to this. It's a specific brief, but it's not an unreasonable one. The catch: if a studio responds badly to specific requirements for children's work, that's actually useful information — it tells you they haven't thought about this kind of booking and you're likely to hit problems on the day. Take your booking elsewhere.

A note on DBS checks

This is about you as the photographer, not the studio. If you're running a children's portrait business — particularly if you ever work without parents present, which some school portrait or nursery work involves — you need an enhanced DBS check. The studio doesn't hold one on your behalf and can't take that responsibility. That's yours.

If you're new to children's portrait work: get your enhanced DBS sorted before you take the first booking. It's a straightforward process through the DBS service and it protects both you and your clients. Don't put it off.

Where children's portrait studios cluster in the UK

Children's portrait work concentrates in suburban areas with strong family demographics rather than city centres. Wimbledon, Richmond, and Ealing in London have a high density of family-oriented studios and photographers. Islington has solid options for north London clients. Outside London, south Manchester — Didsbury, Chorlton, Cheadle — has an active children's portrait market with dedicated studios to match.

Pricing varies significantly by location. Outside London, expect to pay £50–80 per hour for a portrait-quality studio with good light, decent space, and soft floor options. In London, particularly in the more in-demand areas, you're looking at £90–120 per hour for the space itself, not including your equipment or your own time. Book early for the October to December window. It's the busiest period for children's portrait work by some distance, and the good studios fill up fast — especially for Saturdays.

Finding the right space

The directory at creativestudiohire.com lists UK photography studios with filterable specs — floor type, ceiling height, location, and more. If you're looking for a studio that actually works for children's portrait sessions, it's worth using the filters rather than working through general listings. The details I've described in this post are exactly the kind of spec information a good directory should surface, and having it all in one place before you pick up the phone saves a lot of back-and-forth.
