October is when I start thinking about December. Not in a "ho ho ho" way — in a practical, calendar-out, which-rooms-have-north-facing-windows way. By early November, the daylight studios I prefer in Hackney Wick and Peckham are usually locked in by clients who thought ahead. I've been left looking at strip-lit white walls in November trying to recreate what I should have booked six weeks earlier.

So this is the brief on festive content studio hire — not the tinsel-and-baubles kind, but the real production planning that makes Christmas shoots work.

Why November is the hard month

London in November gets roughly nine hours of daylight at the start of the month and barely eight by the end. Sunset's around 4pm by mid-November — 3:55pm by mid-December. That's not a lot of usable window. If you need clean daylight for beauty, lifestyle or food content, you've got a working window of maybe 10am to 3pm before the light goes flat. And that window shrinks fast as you move into December.

The studios that catch natural daylight from the north are the consistent ones — the light is diffused and stays soft across the whole usable window rather than swinging from harsh morning direct sun to flat afternoon grey. But there aren't many of them. Dalston has a few. Hackney Wick has a couple of studios with high north-facing roof lights that genuinely work. Once you get into December, those rooms book solid.

The lesson I've learned the hard way: if your festive content shoot involves any natural light at all, the room you want needs to be in your diary by mid-October. Not by the first of November. By mid-October.

What festive content actually needs from a room

Let's separate the briefs, because they're not all the same.

Hero product shots and e-commerce: These don't actually need natural light. A well-controlled strobe setup — a Profoto B10 Plus at 500 Ws for the key, a Godox AD600 Pro at 600 Ws bounced into a large softbox for fill — gives you consistent, repeatable light whether it's 9am or 4pm. What matters here is surface area. Tabletop product work for Christmas gift guides needs a clean studio with strong overhead rigs, proper electrical supply, and at least a 13A ring main for continuous styling lighting and laptop tethering. Most London studios handle this fine.

Lifestyle and gifting content: This is where the room matters more. Lifestyle festive content — styled flat-lays, atmospheric still-life scenes, person-with-product — often uses a mix of practical styling lights and ambient studio flash. You need prop-storage space, a decent surface area for set-building, and ideally a prop trolley or staging area away from the shooting zone. The studios in Park Royal and Tottenham that have separate storage rooms alongside the main shooting space are really useful for this brief. You're not constantly restyling the same corner.

Branded video content: This is the brief that most often goes wrong in the wrong room. Festive brand video — talking to camera, lifestyle vignettes, product reveal sequences — needs consistent light for long takes. Strobe doesn't work for video. What you need is a continuous LED setup: I use Aputure LS 600d Pros for this, which draw about 720W at full output. At a busy Christmas shoot with two or three of these plus tungsten practicals, you're looking at a 3-phase supply or at least two independent 32A circuits. A 13A ring main will not cut it. Check the power before you book, not on the morning.

The prop and set-build question

Festive content tends to involve more props than any other brief. Wreaths, seasonal botanical arrangements, branded gift wrapping, hero products on styled surfaces — it adds up. I've worked on Christmas shoots where the prop list ran to four A4 pages and the prop truck needed its own parking arrangement.

But studios vary wildly on how they handle prop logistics. Some have a receiving dock where you can drop stock the day before. Others have no reception facilities at all — you're carrying everything in on the day, through a shared corridor, into a lift that might or might not be large enough for your light stands.

The questions I ask every studio before a festive booking:

Can we deliver props and equipment the day before, and is there somewhere secure to store them overnight?
What's the ceiling height, and will it accommodate a C-stand fully extended?
Is there a dedicated makeup and styling area, or does it come out of the main shooting space?
Is the floor surface protected — and if it isn't, will the studio charge for scuffs from prop stands?

That last one has caught me out. A studio in Shoreditch charged a £90 damage fee after a Christmas tabletop shoot because a heavy prop stand left a mark on their polished concrete floor. It was in the T&Cs. I just hadn't read them carefully enough.

Daylight vs artificial: the honest comparison

Here's the thing people don't want to hear: for a lot of festive content, natural daylight in November and December is a liability, not an asset. You're dealing with unpredictable cloud cover, short windows, and colour temperature shifts throughout the day that your post team will hate. Consistent strobe or continuous LED gives you repeatable, controllable results across a full shoot day.

The exception is beauty and fashion work where the quality of natural diffused light genuinely makes a difference — where you're trying to get that specific softness on skin tone that no modifier quite replicates. For those briefs, yes, book the north-facing daylight room and book it early. But for product, gifting and brand content, don't let the romance of natural light lead you into an uncontrollable situation in mid-November.

Booking the room: timeline and lead time

My general rule for December studio time in London:

October: Lock in your date and room, especially for December shoots and any north-facing daylight studio.
November first two weeks: Still viable for standard strobe studios with white cycs and reliable power, particularly in outer east London and north London where there's more availability.
Late November onwards: Expect limited options. You'll find studios if you're flexible — but the rooms you'd really want are gone.

Manchester is slightly more forgiving on availability. Ancoats and Salford studios tend to have less competition from commercial clients in December compared to London, and the rates are meaningfully lower. If your brief can accommodate a northern shoot, it's worth considering.

Rates in December

Studios don't universally inflate their rates at Christmas — what actually happens is that availability compresses, so you lose the off-peak Monday-to-Wednesday discount that normally saves you money. That Dalston daylight studio that's £450 for a Tuesday half-day in September? In December it might be fully booked at the same rate, but you can't get it at all unless you planned ahead. The rate hasn't changed. The room has just gone.

What does go up are costs around the shoot — prop stylists, art directors, set-builders — because everyone is working flat-out in November and December. The studio is often the most affordable line item. The ancillary costs are where December gets expensive.

One thing worth doing before you book

Walk the room — or at least call and ask the studio to walk you through their winter light. Ask them what the space looks like at 2pm on a grey November afternoon with no artificial lighting. Some studios are genuinely honest about this. Others will describe the north-facing windows without mentioning that the building opposite now blocks half the sky. A short Zoom call with someone who's physically in the studio tells you more than any listing photograph taken in July.

And get the power spec in writing. Not "we have plenty of power" — the actual circuit amperage, number of independent circuits, and whether there's three-phase available. In December, with your Aputure rigs plus a hair and makeup station plus laptop charging, you will want to know this before you're standing in a studio at 8am unplugging each other's equipment.

If you're looking for studios available for festive content shoots in November and December, Creative Studio Hire has a UK-wide directory where you can filter by location, power spec and availability. Worth doing the search now rather than in three weeks.
