For a long time, I treated studio hire as a strobe problem. You find a room with enough power for the flash heads, enough space for the modifiers, and then you work. The studio's own lighting — if it had any — was a secondary concern, maybe useful for BTS stills, rarely for the main work.

Then I took a brief that was 60% stills and 40% video. Same talent, same day, same set. And I suddenly had a room full of Profoto Pro-11s that were completely useless for half the shoot.

That was the day I started thinking about studio hire differently for hybrid briefs. Here's what I've learnt since.

The strobe vs continuous split

Strobes freeze motion. That's what they're for. At 1/200s sync speed, a 2,400Ws strobe produces a flash duration short enough to stop most movement dead. For stills, that's usually the goal. For video, it's a disaster — the flash cycle is incompatible with a camera shooting 25fps or 50fps, and you get banding, flickering, or complete overexposure depending on the sync relationship.

Continuous lights stay on. They don't pulse. They give you a consistent output that a camera can shoot at any frame rate without artefacts. The trade-off is that they need to be brighter, at matching power, to achieve the same effective exposure — because all the light is doing work all the time, rather than in one brief burst.

But. In a studio context, you have control over the ambient. You're not competing with sunlight unless you're in a daylight studio — and in a blacked-out commercial space, a well-specified continuous rig can produce the same quality of light as a strobe modifier setup, with the added benefit of working for both video and stills.

What “well-specified” continuous looks like

Not all continuous lights are equal, and the ones that matter for professional photography and video work have specific attributes worth understanding before you book a studio that claims to have them.

CRI and TLCI are the numbers that matter for colour accuracy. CRI (Colour Rendering Index) rates how accurately a light renders colours compared to natural daylight, on a scale to 100. TLCI (Television Lighting Consistency Index) is the video-specific equivalent. For any work where colour accuracy matters — product photography, beauty, fashion, anything going through a colour grade — you want both above 95. Below that and you're correcting in post what the light got wrong at source.

The Aputure 600d Pro is the continuous light I've seen most often in UK hire studios that take video seriously. It draws 720W at maximum output, which means it's pulling a full domestic ring main equivalent on its own. Put two of them in a room and you need a 32A circuit minimum. The colour numbers are good — CRI and TLCI both rated at 96 or higher by Aputure. With the F10 Fresnel modifier you can get 29,300 lux at 3m in a tight spot, which is broadly comparable to a strobe in terms of what it can do at photography apertures. Without the Fresnel it's considerably less punchy, so check which modifiers the hire package includes.

The Arri SkyPanel S60-C is what you see in the higher-end video studios and in spaces that rent to broadcast clients. It's a panel rather than a point source — 420W nominal draw, soft and even output, excellent colour consistency. Not a replacement for a directional key light but genuinely excellent for backgrounds, fill, and mixed daylight setups. When a studio lists an SkyPanel as part of their continuous package, that's a meaningful signal about the quality of continuous lighting on offer.

The Godox SL200W is the more affordable end. 200W, decent CRI, available as a buy-and-bring or from hire studios. Fine for interview setups, lower-budget content, and shoots where you need fill rather than a main source. I own two. They've earned their keep.

Why the room matters more for continuous than for strobe

With strobe, you can overpower a lot of problems. The flash output is so high relative to ambient that even a badly designed space can be brought under control. Continuous lighting doesn't work that way. You're much more dependent on the room being right — the walls, the bounce quality, the ceiling height, the ambient light management.

Specifically:

Blackout. For any continuous rig setup where you need controlled ratios, the room needs to be properly blacked out. Not “we have heavy curtains” — actually dark. A poorly blacked room with continuous lights means you're fighting the colour of whatever's leaking in: orange from streetlights, cool from a skylight you didn't notice, blue-grey from a window behind the set. Strobe overpowers this. Continuous doesn't.

Ceiling height and overheat. Continuous lights run hot. Not dangerously so in normal circumstances, but a ceiling that works fine with strobes might create heat management issues with a full continuous rig running for six hours. Good spaces have ventilation built in for production use. Less-considered spaces don't. It matters in summer more than autumn — but worth asking.

Power circuit dedicated to lighting. A 720W Aputure and its 420W SkyPanel companion will pull 1,140W before you've plugged in anything else. On a shared ring main, that's going to cause problems. Dedicated lighting circuits — separate from the ring main that runs the tethering station and the client's laptops — are the spec you want for a continuous rig in a photography studio.

The hybrid brief — stills and video in one day

This is the use case that makes continuous lighting genuinely worth building a studio search around. The brief: a brand shoot with hero stills for print and digital, plus 30-second social video content from the same session. Same talent, same set, same day, less than eight hours to do both.

The way I now approach this is to set up with a continuous rig that can carry both, rather than a strobe rig for stills and a scramble to fix the lighting for the video sections. A well-balanced continuous key and fill — something like a 600d Pro key with an SkyPanel fill — gives you a stills exposure that works at ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/250s. Which is a fine exposure for most commercial stills work. And gives you a video exposure at the same settings, or close enough to colour-match without a major grade.

The alternative — strobes for stills, then switch to continuous for video — costs you forty minutes of transition time and usually gives you slightly inconsistent colour between the two halves. Not the end of the world, but avoidable.

When to bring your own continuous vs use the studio's

If the studio's continuous package includes a 600d Pro or better, use it. The cost of hiring a 600d Pro separately from a kit supplier for a day in London is roughly £60–£80 on its own, and the studio's package is usually cheaper per head if they're bundling it with the space. The caveat: check what modifiers are included. A continuous head with no softbox is a different beast from one with a properly-sized octabox.

If the studio's package tops out at Godox SL200Ws, and the brief needs the output of a 600W-class light, bring your own or specify that the hire budget needs to extend to a kit rental alongside the studio. Under-lighting a commercial brief on the assumption that the studio's in-house kit will be sufficient is a risk I've taken once and not repeated.

Studios that are set up for this kind of work

In London, the commercial studios that handle hybrid photo-video work well are usually the ones with blackout as a standard feature rather than an add-on, with dedicated power circuits, and with at least one 600W-class continuous head in the standard hire package. They're not the cheapest studios. But the day rate on a well-specified room often comes out comparable to a cheaper studio plus a kit hire alongside it — and the well-specified room doesn't start with a two-hour setup discussion.

Search for studios specifying blackout and continuous lighting packages at creativestudiohire.com. The filter on power specification is genuinely useful when you're trying to find rooms that won't trip the board mid-afternoon.
