Let me save you a day of emails to studios that can't actually fit your car.

I've shot in roughly forty UK studios over the past six years — everything from skincare flats to full automotive campaigns — and the single most common mistake I see from photographers new to car work is booking a cyclorama by its headline width. A studio says it has a 9m cyc. You think: brilliant, a car is what, five metres? Plenty of room. You show up, the crew starts spreading lights, and suddenly it's a game of Tetris where the losers are the production budget and your back.

The numbers you actually need

A full-size SUV — let's say a Range Rover Sport — is 4.94m long, 2.14m wide, and sits about 1.82m tall. That's the subject. Now build outward.

For a three-quarter hero shot, you want at least 1.5m of clear floor on each side of the car. That's to position your key lights — typically a pair of Profoto Pro-11 strobes or HMI units on boom arms — without the stands appearing in your wide frame. Add another 1.2m minimum for the shooting end so your camera-to-bonnet distance at 85mm doesn't crush your foreground. And behind the car, you need at least 2m of cyc for the fill wall to read as infinite in the lens.

Work that out: 2.14m car width + 1.5m each side = 5.14m minimum shooting width. In practice, call it 7m bare minimum. But that's your shooting width. The cyc curve eats roughly 1m on each side at floor level, so the room itself needs to be around 9–10m wide. Anything less and your stands are sitting on the curve, your lights are pointing at the wrong angle, and your shadows are creeping back into frame.

Depth is where most bookings go wrong

Width gets all the attention. Depth kills the shoot.

For automotive you need the cyc depth plus camera-to-car distance plus space for the crew behind the lens. A full-frame camera at 50mm for a ¾ shot on a large SUV wants to be roughly 5–6m from the nose. Add a metre of working space behind the photographer — assistant, light stands, monitor, producer breathing down your neck. You're looking at 8m of usable depth minimum, ideally 10m.

So the floor area floor area for a viable car cyc in a UK studio: 9–10m wide × 8–10m deep. That's 80–100 sqm of working floor, not counting the changing room or the tea station nobody uses but everyone demands.

Ceiling heights: the 4.5m rule

The 4.5m rule is shorthand from automotive photographers who've learned it the hard way — you need 4.5m clear to the rig rail or the ceiling before your overhead lights stop being useful and start being a problem.

A Range Rover at 1.82m tall. Add a boom arm that drops a Profoto D2 Monobloc at a 45-degree angle to the car roof. That arm needs clearance. Rigs for a top-down beauty light on a car — an Arri SkyPanel S60-C on a horizontal bar, for example — want to sit 2.5m above the car's highest point. That puts you at 4.3–4.4m off the floor. Any lower and your light spread starts clipping the roof panels rather than wrapping around the bodywork.

Studios that advertise 4m ceilings cut it fine. Studios with 3.5m ceilings just aren't suitable for automotive work, full stop. I've had productions try to make a 3.6m-ceiling studio work by using floor-level side lighting only — and it can produce interesting noir-adjacent results, but it's not a commercial hero shoot.

Product vs automotive: why the gap is bigger than you think

Product photographers often work in a cyc that's 3m wide and 2.4m high. Perfect for a perfume bottle, a pair of trainers, a kitchen blender. But the jump to automotive isn't linear. A car is roughly thirty times the physical volume of a shoe. The lighting ratios, the number of flags, the camera-to-subject distances — everything scales up and the tolerances get tighter.

I've seen product photographers walk into a car brief thinking the main difference is logistics. It is logistics, but it's also physics. At 2.4m ceiling height, the only way to get an overhead key light on a car roof is to mount it on a ladder and hope nobody needs to move. At 4.5m you've got real options — a rail, a boom, a proper overhead soft box.

What to ask the studio before you book

Don't just ask 'can you fit a car?' Ask these specific questions:

What is the internal width of the cyc wall, measured wall to wall at the shooting depth?
What is the clear ceiling height from floor to the underside of the rig rail or nearest obstruction?
What is the depth from the back wall to the studio entrance or loading bay?
Is there a drive-in access — and what's the lintel height on the loading bay?

That last one catches people out constantly. You've confirmed the cyc dimensions. You arrive with a Defender 110 and the roller door is 1.9m. And that's your day over before it started.

Standard loading bay lintels in London warehouse studios are often 2.0–2.2m, fine for saloons, tight for large SUVs. Always ask. A good studio in Hackney Wick I've used has a 3.5m roller door specifically because the owner did a lot of van and truck work. It's the exception, not the rule.

UK studios that actually work for car photography

I'm not going to list names here because availability changes and I'd rather you search properly than call a studio I've named and find it's been converted to hot-desking. But the areas to focus on for proper automotive space in London are Park Royal, Tottenham Hale, and Hackney Wick — all industrial zones with the kind of floor area that works.

Manchester has a good cluster in Ancoats and the Trafford Park industrial area. The floor area tends to be larger and the rates typically run 25–35% below comparable London space. If you're shooting for a UK-market campaign that doesn't need London as the brief, Manchester is worth pricing up.

Outside both cities: Birmingham has grown its production studio offer over the past three years. A few venues near the Jewellery Quarter now advertise 10m+ cycs. Worth checking if your shoot is based in the Midlands.

The short version

For a single full-size car with standard commercial lighting: 9m wide minimum, 8m deep minimum, 4.5m ceiling minimum. If any of those three numbers is materially shorter, you'll either run out of floor or run out of ceiling mid-shoot.

And always, always confirm the loading bay dimensions before the booking confirmation. Not in the studio notes. On the phone, with a person, who has physically measured it.

If you need to find UK studios that actually list their cyclorama dimensions clearly — rather than making you email three times to get a floor plan — creativestudiohire.com lists verified studio specs including cyc dimensions, ceiling heights, and loading access details.
