If you book studios for a living you've read a lot of listings. And you've probably noticed that most 'daylight studio' descriptions are noise. They tell you the room is 'flooded with natural light', has 'gorgeous tall windows', is 'ideal for editorial work'. None of those phrases tell you whether you can actually shoot what you want to shoot.

I've kept a private list of the specs I genuinely check before I book any daylight room. It's short. It's not glamorous. It's also more useful than 99% of the marketing prose you'll read on a listing.

The five specs that actually matter

One: window orientation

North, south, east or west. That's it. Combined with rough hour-of-day, that's nearly all you need to know about the light.

North-facing in the UK gives you soft directional daylight from about an hour after sunrise to an hour before sunset, with no direct sun crossing the window. Best for portrait, fashion lookbook, anything where you want clean even light without thinking.

South-facing means direct sun through most of the working day from spring to autumn. Beautiful in winter. Punishing in summer unless you have heavy diffusion or scrim built in. Useful for harder, more directional work but you'll be managing the light constantly.

East-facing is excellent before lunchtime, useless after. West-facing the reverse. Both are fine if you plan around them.

The studios that actually publish window orientation in their listings are a tiny minority, even on Peerspace. Worth asking specifically.

Two: window area as a percentage of room footprint

Not the headline 'tall windows' claim. The actual ratio of glass to floor area.

Rule of thumb I use: 25% glass-to-floor ratio is a properly bright daylight room. 15% is workable for portraits but you'll be at the limit of what you can do with no supplementary light. Below 10% it's a room with windows, not a daylight studio, regardless of what the listing says.

Calculate it: window width × window height × number of windows, divided by floor area. The studio either tells you the floor area in sqm (most do) and the window heights (most don't) — but you can usually tell from the listing photos by counting tiles, panels, or comparing to obvious objects.

Three: ceiling height

For most fashion and portrait work you want 3.5m+ at minimum. Below that, hair lights and rim lights with any modifier on top become awkward fast. Above 4m and you can rig pretty much anything off C-stands without crouching.

For car or large-set work, 5m is a reasonable minimum and 6m+ is comfortable.

For product, 2.8m is fine. You're not lighting from above with anything bigger than a 60cm softbox.

Ceiling height is one spec almost every listing publishes, but they often quote the maximum point of a sloped roof. Ask for the working ceiling — the height across the main shooting area, not the apex.

Four: artificial light contamination

This is the one nobody mentions. The studio has 'natural light from huge windows', and also has eight overhead fluorescent strips at 4000K colour-temperature that nobody can switch off because they're on the building's main circuit. So your daylight shoot is actually mixed-light shoot.

The fix from the studio side is dimmable, switchable overheads on a per-room circuit, ideally tungsten or warm-white LED that can be killed entirely when shooting daylight. The reality in most rooms is one big switch for everything.

Ask: 'can I turn all the overhead lights off independently of the rest of the building?' If the answer is no, you're either bringing scrim and gobos to control your set or you're shooting with mixed colour temperature and fixing it in retouch.

Five: window glazing type

Single-glazed Victorian sash gives you light that's close to outdoor daylight in spectrum and intensity. Double-glazed UV-treated modern glass cuts a chunk of UV and shifts the colour balance slightly cooler. Triple-glazed low-E glass cuts a lot more, and the spectrum can be noticeably different.

For most photo work the difference is small enough to ignore. For specific brand work — anything where colour accuracy of natural materials matters, like cosmetics, beauty, food, paint, fabric — the glazing matters and is worth asking about.

The studios that have proper UV-transparent glazing usually mention it; the ones that don't, don't know.

The marketing claims that mean nothing

'Flooded with natural light'

Could mean anything. Most rooms I've shot in that the listing called 'flooded' had one window, two if I was lucky. Ignore.

'Tall windows'

How tall? Compared to what? A 2m sash window is tall in a domestic context and short in a converted Victorian factory. Look at the photos and judge for yourself.

'Ideal for editorial photography'

Means the host has been told their studio is good for editorial. Doesn't mean you can shoot a four-page Vogue spread in there. Look at the actual editorial work that's been shot in the room — most reputable studios will list previous clients or shoots.

'Soft, beautiful natural light'

Light is light. Whether it's soft depends on window area, distance from your subject, and weather conditions. The host's adjective doesn't tell you anything useful.

'Versatile space'

Means the room is rectangular and white. Useful information presented uselessly. Ask for the dimensions and judge.

The two questions that cut through

Before I book any daylight studio I haven't shot in, I email the host with two questions:

One. 'What direction do the windows face, and what's the working ceiling height across the main shooting area?'

Two. 'Can all overhead and supplementary lighting be switched off independently of the rest of the building?'

The quality of the answers tells you everything. A host who answers both quickly and specifically has thought about photographers as customers and is probably running a competent room. A host who's vague or evasive is going to be vague and evasive on the day.

What about cloud cover and time of year

Worth a thought. UK daylight is highly variable.

Summer: long hours, direct sun even on north-facing windows in the early morning and late evening, generally bright through the working day even when overcast.

Winter: short hours, low sun angle (the sun doesn't get above about 15° at midday in December at London latitude), often overcast. A daylight studio in November is a much darker room than the same studio in June, and you'll need supplementary light for almost any commercial work.

Plan accordingly. Booking a north-facing daylight studio for an 8am-to-5pm shoot in January will give you about three usable hours of pure-daylight work, two on either side where you'll be augmenting with strobe.

The strobe-plus-daylight workflow

Most commercial daylight shoots aren't pure daylight. They're daylight as the dominant light source, with one strobe for fill or kicker. The reason is consistency — you can't trust UK weather to give you the same light at 10am and at 2pm.

A Profoto B10 Plus at quarter power with a 1m softbox is roughly equivalent to the fill side of a north-window setup. Match the colour temperature (the B10's modeling light is around 5400K, close to overcast daylight) and you can shoot through a passing cloud without changing exposure.

Aputure 600d Pro at 5600K does the same job with continuous light, useful when you're shooting motion or video alongside stills.

The studios I rate

I'm not going to name them all here — that's a different post — but a quick filter for the ones that publish their specs honestly:

The listing has dimensions in sqm, ceiling height in m, window orientation specified, and a photo of the room with the overhead lights off. If all four are present, the host is serious. If two or fewer, the host is selling.

The summary you can use today

Window orientation, glass-to-floor ratio, working ceiling height, switchable overheads, and what the glazing's made of. Five specs. Ask any host these five questions before you book and you'll save yourself a lot of wasted shoot days.

The marketing prose is fine — it's how studios sell themselves and that's their business. But the booking decision should be based on the numbers, not the adjectives. Once you've trained your eye on the five specs, you start to see daylight studios properly. And you stop being surprised on the day.
