Bottles are unforgiving. Glass surfaces pick up every reflection in the room — the studio door, the light stand in the background, the slightly uneven white ceiling tile that you didn't notice until you saw it reflected in the side of a whisky bottle on a 100mm macro shot. And because a bottle shoot almost always involves shooting into or through the glass, the quality of the light you're working with shows up in the image in a way it simply doesn't on a matte product or a fabric subject.

I've done bottle work in studios from Bermondsey to Ancoats. The ones that worked had a few things in common. The ones that didn't taught me exactly what to look for before I book a studio for drinks or spirits brand photography in 2026.

Surface quality — the thing people skip

The first call on any bottle shoot is the surface the product sits on. And the studio floor or table situation matters immediately.

For spirits in particular — the whisky brand category, premium gin, cognac — the surface is often in-frame and contributes to brand positioning. A scratched acrylic block looks cheap. A matte grey vinyl floor looks generic. A textured slate surface or a brushed metal table reads as premium.

But here's the thing: most studios don't provide specialist surfaces. They provide white floors, white floors, and white floors. Occasionally a dark laminate if you're lucky. Anything beyond that, you're bringing yourself or sourcing from a props house.

What you need from the studio is a flat, clean, unmarked floor that you can lay surfaces over, plus enough ceiling height that you can position overhead lighting without the reflections of your rig showing up in the glass. And you need the floor to be genuinely level — I've had bottle shots ruined because a slight floor slope meant the liquid line was off-horizontal and I couldn't correct it without reshooting.

Most professional bottle photography uses a technique where you're not pointing light directly at the bottle — you're bouncing light off white or black cards positioned around it, and the bottle reflects those cards. This means your studio needs enough space to surround a small product with a ring of cards at a working distance. More space than people expect — you might be working with a subject that's 30cm tall but needing 2–3m of clear floor around it to get the card angles right.

It also means ceiling height matters even for small-subject macro work. If you're shooting straight down onto a product from overhead (very common for cocktail and spirit pours), you need height — both for the camera position and for the overhead light sources. A 2.4m ceiling limits that severely. I'd say 3m minimum for overhead macro work, and 3.5m if you're also doing any full-bottle vertical shots with the bottle at full height.

Power requirements for drinks photography

Here's something that surprises people: drinks and spirits photography often runs more flash power than fashion or portrait work, not less. The reason is depth of field. You're shooting at f/11 to f/16 to get front-to-back sharpness on a product — and at those apertures you need serious output from your strobes to get a proper exposure at ISO 100.

I typically run a Profoto D2 (2400Ws monobloc) as my main light source for bottle work, with a pair of smaller speedlights or the Profoto B10 (250Ws each) for fill and kicker. Total power draw across the flash setup alone is significant — and if you're also running continuous LEDs for video alongside stills on the same day, you're looking at a serious power requirement.

Minimum for a proper commercial drinks shoot: two 32A circuits. Ask what's available. Studios that regularly host food and drink photography clients will know this question and answer it without hesitation. Ideally a motorised backdrop rail with multiple rolls, or at least a manual system with enough arms to swap rolls without a full breakdown. Studios with only a single fixed backdrop are limiting unless you've agreed the colour before you book.

For the very high-end campaign work — single-malt Scotch, aged cognac, craft gin with a specific brand positioning — you're often bringing the backdrop from a specialist supplier anyway. In which case the studio just needs a bare wall in good condition and somewhere to mount the pull-to from. Check whether the studio walls are in a state you can tape or pin to, and whether there's rigging overhead to hang fabric drops.

Prop space and product storage

Drinks shoots tend to arrive with a lot of product — multiple SKUs of the same bottle for different shots, variations in label design, backstock in case a bottle breaks, hero product that can't be opened versus product for the pour shots. Plus props: glassware, ice, botanicals, the branded items the client insists on including, various surface textures and background materials you're testing on the day.

Ask the studio: is there a separate prop storage area? A sturdy table for product layout? Some studios are genuinely generous here — a side room with shelving, a proper production table, a refrigerator if you're doing beer or wine with liquid in frame. Others are just a studio floor with a corner you can dump your bags in.

For a single-day shoot with one product line, the corner approach is workable. For a multi-day commercial campaign with a brand manager on set and multiple product categories being shot, you want a studio with proper facilities — and you're paying for it at the £700–1000/day bracket where those facilities exist.

Studios I'd point drinks photographers toward

London has a handful of proper product photography studios that handle drinks work regularly. The food and product studios in Hackney Wick tend to be set up for this — they've got the overhead rig positions, the flat floors, the power, and the prop storage that commercial product clients need. A mid-tier Manchester studio comes in at roughly £350–450 for a full day versus £600–800 for a comparable London studio.
