E-commerce fashion photography has a reputation for being simple. Clean white background, model, move on. And it can be that. But the shoots that run well — fifty looks a day, consistent lighting across all of them, a creative direction that holds through twelve hours — don't happen because the studio is just a white room. They happen because the studio is the right white room, booked with the right specs, and checked before anyone loads a van.

I've shot catalogue work in London, Leeds and Manchester over the past three years. The studios that caused problems were almost never the ones that looked bad on paper — they were the ones where I didn't ask the right questions upfront. Here's what I ask now.

Floor area and shooting geometry

The minimum usable shooting space for a standard e-commerce setup — one model, full-length shots, two camera positions — is about 6 metres wide and 8 metres deep. That sounds generous. It isn't once you've put up a 9ft seamless backdrop on a stand, positioned three lights (key, fill, hair), left space for a camera on a tripod and a monitor, and kept enough throw distance to get the model's full body in frame at a 50mm equivalent focal length without distorting the proportions.

A lot of studios that market themselves as fashion spaces are 4x5m. That works for head-and-shoulders portraits. For full-length on a model it forces you into a wider focal length that makes legs look longer and torsos look shorter. Which is fine for some brief styles and actively bad for catalogue work where the client needs consistent proportions across hundreds of images.

Ask for the floor plan dimensions, not just the square footage. A 30 sq m room that's 10m long and 3m wide is very different from one that's 5.5m square. Long and narrow is usually worse for fashion — you get either the backdrop distance or the lighting space, rarely both.

Backdrop systems and what's included

For e-commerce, you typically want at least two backdrop widths available — a 2.7m wide roll for standard half-body and detail shots, and ideally a 3.6m or wider roll for full-length. Studios that only have 1.8m backdrops are portrait studios, not fashion studios. That width clips the shoulders on anything except a very narrow crop.

Check whether the studio provides backdrop stands or has a rail system. Rail systems — ceiling-mounted — are significantly better for fashion work because they let you swap colours without repositioning your lights. On stand-mounted backdrop systems, every roll change involves someone moving the stand legs, which nudges the backdrop position slightly, which means you're adjusting your shot again.

And check the actual backdrop colours available. White is standard. Light grey is useful for a lower-contrast look that reads more natural in context on a product page. Off-white ('natural white' or 'muslin white') can shift the mood of the whole day in a way clients notice even when they can't name it. Ask for photos of the actual backdrops in the studio light, not the marketing photos taken on the best day with the best exposure.

Ceiling height and the overhead light position

For e-commerce fashion, the ceiling height rule isn't as strict as for car photography or green screen work. Three and a half metres is workable for a standard flat-light catalogue setup. But there's a specific problem that crops up below 3.5m: you can't get an overhead strip box or a beauty dish high enough above the model to create a clean top-down gradient without the fixture being visible in frame on a wide shot.

The solution — lowering the key light to avoid the frame edge — changes the shadow angle and makes the lighting look harder at the base. Fine for fashion that wants a slight contrast. Bad for catalogue work where the brief is 'even, clean light, show the garment construction'. Ask what the usable rig height is — meaning the height to which they can position a rigged fixture, not just the ceiling height.

Power for your lighting setup

A standard e-commerce fashion setup might run: a main strobe unit (Profoto D2 at 500Ws or equivalent, draw varies), two Profoto B10 Plus units as rim and hair lights (500Ws each, battery-powered so no mains draw), a continuous LED key light for tethered preview (say an Aputure LS 300x at 350W), and a laptop, laptop charger, card reader and tethering hub (modest draw, maybe 100W combined).

That's around 1,000–1,200W of mains draw at peak, comfortably within a single 13A circuit. But the moment your stylist wants to run a clothes steamer (1,200–2,500W depending on model) and the client brings a laptop and a phone on charge, you're looking at 3,000W-plus on the same ring. Two circuits, minimum. And a clear conversation with the studio about which sockets are on which circuit before anyone starts steaming.

Steamers trip studio breakers with remarkable frequency. I now ask every studio, before booking, what their maximum draw per circuit is and which sockets are on the same ring as the kitchen. The kitchen's the problem. Kettles, microwaves and toasters on the same circuit as your shooting space is a recipe for a breaker trip at the exact moment the client is watching a live preview on the tethered monitor.

Changing room and styling space

This one gets overlooked constantly and it matters for a fashion shoot more than almost any other type of work.

You need a changing room that's lockable (or at least private), large enough for a model and a stylist to work in simultaneously, and lit with something approximating the shooting light colour temperature. If the changing room has warm tungsten bulbs and the studio is lit with 5600K strobes, the model and stylist are evaluating the look in the wrong colour. It sounds minor. On a 50-look day where the stylist is making on-the-fly decisions about colour combinations, it genuinely affects the output.

A hanging rail outside or adjacent to the changing room is basic but not always present. If the studio doesn't have a dedicated hanging space, a day's worth of looks gets piled on chairs and surfaces, which creates a wardrobe management problem on hour four.

Natural light

A lot of e-commerce fashion photographers don't use it — the inconsistency is too much of a problem when you need to shoot 60 looks with consistent exposure and colour across the day. But some studios with north-facing windows are bookable for specific morning slots where the light is soft and consistent enough to anchor a continuous-light look.

If natural light is part of your brief, check the studio's orientation and ask what the shooting window is. North-facing windows in London give you a usable even light from roughly 8am to around 2pm in summer before the sun angle starts creating direct patches. South-facing windows in a high-latitude city like Leeds give you less useful direct light but can work as a diffused key through a large scrim. Don't take 'we have great natural light' at face value — ask which way the glass faces.

Tethering and connectivity

E-commerce fashion shoots run tethered — the client or art director needs to approve looks in real time on a colour-calibrated monitor. That means the studio's internet connection needs to be stable and fast enough to push previews from Capture One to a remote client if they're not on-site.

Ask the studio for their upload speed and whether it's shared or dedicated. A shared studio complex where three other rooms are all uploading high-res files simultaneously is a very different proposition from a single room with a dedicated fibre connection. I've had two shoots where the client remote preview kept dropping because the studio's shared Wi-Fi was saturated — not a disaster, but it added friction to a long day.

What to look for in London, Leeds and Manchester

In London, the concentration of fashion-specific studios is highest in Hackney, Shoreditch, Peckham and Park Royal. Rates for a purpose-built fashion studio with all the above in order — wide backdrop system, separate circuits, proper changing room — run about £150–£280 per hour or £900–£1,800 per day on dry hire. Full-service studios with an included lighting kit and monitor setup push higher.

Manchester is cheaper — you can find equivalent spec for £80–£150 per hour — but the selection is narrower. The best-equipped fashion studios in the city tend to cluster in the Northern Quarter and Ancoats rather than being spread across the city. Worth searching before committing to a London trip for a brief that doesn't require specific London talent or logistics.

Leeds has a growing studio scene, particularly around Holbeck Urban Village and the South Bank area. Rates are competitive — often 30 to 40 percent lower than comparable London spaces — and travel costs from London are manageable on a Transpennine for a one-person advance scout. If your client is Manchester or Leeds-based, the budget case for a Leeds or Manchester studio is usually straightforward.

A few searches and a couple of calls before booking will save a full day of production problems on the shoot itself.
