I ran a full week of catalogue photography in Leeds in February. Eleven SKUs per day, five days, white background, consistent lighting, fast turnaround for next-day upload. The studio cost me £250 per day. In London, the same spec would have run £500–700. And the crew call was easier — nobody was stuck on the Central line at 7am.

E-commerce photography is one of the categories where the case for shooting outside London is clearest. The brief is usually consistent, technical, and repeatable — which means the premium you pay for a central London postcode buys you nothing you actually need. Here's what the regional options look like in 2026.

What an e-comm shoot actually needs from a studio

Before getting into locations: it helps to be clear on what makes a studio work for e-commerce photography, because the requirements are specific and different from editorial or lifestyle work.

Consistent, controllable light is the main one. A daylight studio is fine if the sky stays the same across the session, which it usually doesn't. For catalogue work where you're shooting hundreds of images that need to match across days and sessions, a fully blacked-out space with a controlled artificial light rig is the more reliable call. Consistent colour temperature, consistent output, consistent exposure — you can reproduce it exactly whether it's 9am or 4pm, Tuesday or Friday.

Table-to-ceiling flexibility matters. E-comm ranges from jewellery on a tabletop (where you're working at macro distances with a macro rail) to full outfits on a mannequin or model (where you need 3–4m of clear working distance). The studio needs to accommodate both without reconfiguring the whole space. Adjustable ceiling rails for hanging backdrops at different heights are useful here; a fixed overhead rig that only works at one height is less so.

And clean access. E-comm studios get a lot of stock through them — boxes, mannequins, rail after rail of clothing. Loading without a lift or a trolley-friendly threshold adds real time to the day. Not the romantic access problem, just the practical one.

Leeds

Leeds has a better e-commerce studio scene than most people outside Yorkshire know about. The city has a significant retail and fashion presence — ASOS, Marks & Spencer, and a lot of mid-size clothing brands are within reach — which has created demand for exactly the kind of controlled, consistent photography infrastructure an e-comm studio needs.

Silkwood Studio, near junction 26 of the M62 in Cleckheaton (technically between Leeds and Bradford), is probably the most frequently recommended standalone product photography studio in the region. It's purpose-built for e-commerce and product work: full blackout, adjustable light rigs, proper loading access, and experienced staff who know the product photography workflow. Not a general photography studio that happens to be available — a dedicated e-comm space. Day rates run in the £200–350 range depending on the brief and duration.

Dock Street Studio in central Leeds is one of the largest studios in the city centre: 8m x 11m floor, 10ft ceilings (3m), with optional natural light. It works for larger product set builds and full-look fashion. Central location makes model bookings and crew access easy. Rates around £50 per hour, which translates to roughly £350–400 for a full day.

DARE Studios, also in Leeds, has positioned itself specifically for e-commerce work and has kit to match — rail systems, mannequins, adjustable table systems. Clients have reported significant conversion increases on product listings after switching to proper studio photography, which is the kind of result that makes the studio cost obvious.

Manchester

Manchester's e-comm studio options overlap with the general photography studio market rather than being purpose-built for product work. That's not a problem — general studios can be configured well — but it means you need to be more specific when enquiring.

Budget Studio Hire in Manchester is exactly what it says: affordable, basic, functional. Fine for small product and apparel work on a tight budget. Photography averages around £45 per hour across the Manchester market, with full-day rates starting around £300 for established spaces.

The Ancoats studios — Spectrum, Studio Bee, and the owner-operated mill spaces — are well suited to mixed-brief work where you need e-comm in the morning and a more editorial lifestyle aesthetic in the afternoon. The daylight and character of those spaces adds value for certain types of product photography. Not always the right call for pure catalogue output, but worth knowing about for varied briefs.

For larger e-commerce productions — clothing brands doing whole-season shoots, brands that need set build space alongside the sweep paper — the Salford Quays area has studios with the square footage and loading infrastructure to handle it. The rates there run 15–20% above Ancoats, justified if the brief needs the space.

Birmingham

Birmingham's studio scene is anchored around Digbeth and the Jewellery Quarter, and it has a specific strength for small product and jewellery photography. The Jewellery Quarter's heritage means there are several spaces set up specifically for macro and tabletop product work — proper light control, macro rails, the kind of infrastructure that jewellery photography needs and that a general photography studio rarely has.

For e-commerce work, Birmingham's day rates run £35–55 per hour depending on spec and location — slightly below Manchester for comparable facilities. A full-day rate for a maintained commercial space with consistent lighting sits around £280–400. Cheaper than Leeds for equivalent spec, and accessible from the M6 with loading that's manageable at most Digbeth studios.

The one challenge with Birmingham e-comm studios is that the best ones are often full. The city's proximity to the Midlands retail belt — Coventry, Leicester, Northampton — means there's steady demand from brands that don't want to deal with London costs or Leeds distance. Booking ahead by two to three weeks is more important here than in Manchester or Leeds.

The maths against London

For a standard e-comm day: London studio at £550 per day, regional studio at £300. That's a £250 saving per day. Across a five-day catalogue shoot, that's £1,250 — enough to cover a hotel for the London-based photographer if they want to travel and shoot on location, or a meaningful chunk of the retouching budget.

The saving is larger on longer bookings. Regional studios often have monthly rates or block-booking discounts for brands that need recurring access. A fashion brand running weekly product shoots could be looking at a monthly saving of £2,000–4,000 versus a comparable London arrangement.

The offset costs are crew accommodation if you're based in London and need a two-day block away from home, and transport if you're moving a lot of kit. On shorter jobs — a single day, small SKU count — London can still make sense from a pure logistics point of view. But anything over two or three days, the maths almost always tips regional.

What to check before booking a regional e-comm studio

Whether the studio has a full blackout option — essential for consistent artificial-light output across a long session
Light rig flexibility: can you adjust height and position, or is it fixed?
Included backdrop options: multiple coloured sweeps, or just white?
Power supply at the shooting position — how many 13A sockets, any 32A?
Loading access: can a rail of 50 garments be moved in without a lift?
Whether the studio is familiar with product photography workflows — studios that shoot predominantly commercial work move faster on briefs like this

That last point is underrated. A studio manager who has done a hundred product shoots knows that you need the backdrop changed quickly, that the mannequin needs to be positioned under the exact light position, and that the first hour isn't for testing — it's for shooting. Studios that only occasionally do e-comm work are slower to set up and often under-equipped for the rhythm of catalogue production.

The platforms vs direct booking question for regional studios

A lot of regional e-comm studios aren't on Peerspace or Giggster at all — they have their own booking pages and a client list they've built over time. Direct is the default here, not the exception. Search for the studio, call ahead to discuss the brief, agree on a day rate. Simpler than the platform workflow and without the 15–19% surcharge.
