Fashion editorial is not e-commerce. I know that sounds obvious, but I've watched enough photographers book the wrong room for a lookbook shoot because they treated it like a catalogue job. Different brief. Different room.

So what does editorial mean here? Lookbooks, magazine-style campaigns, press imagery, brand story content — the kind of shoot where the mood board matters as much as the product. Fewer shots, more setup time per look, and often an art director who's referencing French Vogue rather than a studio backgrounder form. The client brief is usually "lifestyle with polish" rather than "product clearly visible on white".

Why the studio spec changes

For e-commerce, you typically want: big white cyclorama, consistent even lighting, high ceiling to stop spill on the backdrop. Batch through thirty looks, clean images, buyer can see the garment. The studio is a machine. Efficient. Predictable.

Editorial is different. You're building a mood. That often means natural light as an ingredient, not something to be blocked out. It means space for a lighting setup that creates shadows — directional rather than flat. And it often means surfaces beyond white: exposed brick, timber floors, a structural element that earns its place in frame.

The room you need isn't the biggest cyc in Hackney Wick. It might be a 5m x 8m space with a north-facing window, decent ceiling clearance, and flooring that photographs well. Completely different search.

Natural light: the spec worth arguing about

North-facing windows are the editorial photographer's obsession. And it's not wrong — north light in the UK is soft, consistent, doesn't shift dramatically through the day. But direction is only part of it. Window size matters. How close can a model get to the glass? Do the frames add a visual element, or do they just let light in?

I shot a lookbook in Dalston last spring in a space with three large north-facing windows about 1.5m from the floor. The light came in diffused, mixed softly into the shadow side, and I barely touched a reflector all day. That kind of setup is what you're searching for. And it's worth booking even if it costs more than the cyc down the road.

The catch: lots of listings say "natural light" and mean "some windows, some direction, mixed with south-facing glass that shifts colour cast through the day". Ask specifically. How many windows? Which direction? Are there blackout options for when you need to switch to flash-only?

Ceiling height: lower stakes than you think

For car shoots and tall set builds, ceiling height is everything. For editorial fashion? It matters, but not in the same way. You need enough headroom to get an umbrella or a scrim into position. But you're not running Arri SkyPanels on a rigging bar — you're more likely using a Profoto B10 (250Ws) or an Aputure 600d through a medium softbox on a C-stand.

3.5m is generally fine for editorial. You're not filling the room with light — you're creating a single quality source, possibly bounced off a wall or v-flat, with some negative fill via a black reflector. 4m gives you breathing room. Under 3m starts to feel constraining once the grip equipment is in.

But honestly, I've done some of my best lookbook work in rooms that felt almost too small. The constraints force better framing. A 4m x 6m space with excellent window light beats a 10m x 15m cyc with no natural light, for this brief, every single time.

Flooring: what ends up in frame

For e-comm, the floor is cleaned before a model walk-on and nobody particularly cares what it looks like. For editorial, the floor is in frame. It's compositional. I want either polished concrete that photographs with texture, wide-plank timber that adds warmth, or a surface I can put a rug on without it looking forced.

Painted plywood and thin laminate are a nightmare. They either blow out under flash or look cheap in natural light. Ask to see a floor photo — not a marketing shot, but a low-angle shot showing actual texture and condition. And I always ask about scuff marks. A cyc bashed weekly by e-comm clients has marks that disappear when lit flat. But on a polished concrete floor in an editorial frame, one bad scuff is a Photoshop job.

Changing space and the stylist question

Editorial shoots mean a stylist, often a makeup artist, sometimes a hair person. That's four or five people who need somewhere to put clothes and work. A studio with a dedicated changing room with a rail and a mirror is worth an extra £20–£30 a day. A studio that says "changing happens in the corner" is not.

Learnt this the hard way. On a shoot in Shoreditch two years ago, the changing 'area' was a screen in the corner of the studio. Fine for one model. A disaster once a second model and a stylist were working simultaneously. We lost an hour to logistics that had nothing to do with photography.

Look for: a separate room or clearly partitioned space, a rail that holds at least forty garments, a full-length mirror, a flat surface for bags and accessories. Not every studio has this, but the ones that do — you feel the difference across the day.

Directional flash and room colour

Editorial lighting is usually a single well-shaped source. A large Profoto 3' Octa as key, a negative fill on the shadow side, maybe a rim or kicker if the art director wants separation. That's three stands, a model mark, and you need to be able to move around the setup.

Room colour matters more than most listings admit. White walls bounce light back in ways you didn't plan for — any strobe near a wall creates an uncontrolled secondary fill. Mid-grey or dark grey walls are far easier for directional flash work. Some of the best editorial rooms I've been in have had quite dark walls and relied on the window for primary illumination. The contrast between window light and the darker space behind the model is exactly what makes those images feel editorial rather than commercial.

So ask about wall colour. Not just whether there's a white background option, but what the actual walls are. And whether there are flats you can position to block or flag unwanted bounce.

Setup time and how editorial shoots run

Editorial shoots run slower than e-comm. You're not burning through thirty looks in eight hours. You might do ten looks across the day, with twenty minutes of setup and adjustment per look, a proper lunch break, time for the stylist to prep the next outfit before the model is released. The room has to work at a leisurely pace, not just at full production speed.

This changes how I book. For catalogue work I'll push for a half-day because we'll be done. For editorial I book a full day with an hour's buffer because I know something will take longer than I expected — usually the lighting setup on the first look, or a last-minute change from the art director. Booking two extra hours upfront is cheaper than calling the studio at 4pm asking if anyone else has the room tonight.

London rates for editorial work

An 8-hour editorial day in Hackney Wick or Dalston runs roughly £475–£750 for a decent studio with good natural light. Some spaces offer editorial day-rate discounts for longer bookings or mid-week slots — always worth asking. Under £350 a day and you're probably sacrificing the window quality or the changing room.

Shoreditch rates trend higher — £600–£900 for the same format. You're paying for postcode and the ability to tell a client the shoot was in Shoreditch. Sometimes that's a line item in the brief. Often it isn't, and the Hackney room is better anyway.

The useful question isn't what's cheapest but what's right for the specific mood board. A brief referencing natural light and raw textures? Look for Hackney Wick. Something more stripped-back and minimal? Dalston has studios that do that better than most.

Platform vs direct booking

Peerspace shows a reasonable range of editorial-suitable spaces in London. Add 10–15% service fee on top of the listed rate, which is meaningful on a full-day booking. Giggster UK has fewer editorial options in my experience — their London inventory skews commercial, towards cycs and production-sized spaces. For this brief, I'd start on Peerspace or just go direct via the studio's own site.

Direct booking is better once you've shot a space and liked it. Most owners will negotiate on repeat business. I've been booking one Dalston studio twice a month and I've dropped around £100 a day from the platform rate by going direct. That pays for a decent lunch and gives me a relationship with the owner that means last-minute bookings actually get confirmed.

Questions to ask before you confirm

Short version of what I send every studio before an editorial booking:

Window direction and actual dimensions (not marketing description)
Natural light photos from mid-morning and mid-afternoon, shot by whoever, not the studio's pro images
Floor close-up showing condition
Changing room specifics: rail capacity, mirror, separate space?
Wall colours throughout the main shooting space
Power: 32A circuit as minimum, plus 13A sockets
Neighbouring noise in the building? (especially mid-week near industrial units)

What doesn't matter for this brief

Cyclorama size, frankly. You're not shooting on a cyc for editorial work. You don't need a loading bay, a 100A three-phase supply, or a ceiling crane. Some of the best editorial rooms in London are in first-floor converted spaces with no freight lift — and that's fine, because you're carrying in a kit bag and a few stands, not a lighting truck.

Don't pay for a cyc studio if you don't need one. The rate goes up, the cyc sits unused all day, and you end up shooting in the corner against a wall anyway. I've made that mistake twice. The third time, I found a room with a window and booked that instead.
