I've been doing fashion production work in Manchester for about three years now, and I'm still surprised by how many London-based producers assume they need to fly the whole crew up and cram into the same city-centre Airbnb to make it work. You don't. Manchester has proper production studios. Not "nice light and an exposed brick wall" studios. Proper ones — with 3-phase power, actual ceiling height, loading access for a Luton van, and someone on the other end of the phone who's worked on a fashion set before.

This is what I look for, and what I actually paid in 2026.

Fashion video is not the same as a fashion photo shoot

I know that sounds obvious. But I've booked studios that were perfect for stills work and genuinely problematic for video — and the difference is almost never in the photos on the listing page. You can't tell from a wide shot whether the ceiling is 3m or 5m. You can't tell if there's a 32A 3-phase feed or just a domestic ring main with a 16A socket tucked in the corner.

For fashion hero video — the filmic editorial stuff — you're running bigger lights for longer. An Arri SkyPanel S60-C draws around 420W nominally. Get two overhead on a rig plus a kicker, add monitors, a sound cart, a hair and make-up station, and you're touching 2–3kW before you've plugged in the camera operator's MacBook. On a 13A ring main that's impossible. On a single 16A circuit you're marginal and stressed. You need at least two independent 32A circuits, ideally split so the lighting rig and the talent and production desk are on separate feeds.

The other thing fashion video needs that photo doesn't: adjacent space. B-roll in a fashion context means close-up texture work — fabric detail, accessories, maybe a tabletop product rig for the brand selects. You can't do that on the same set where the director is mid-take. You need a second room, or at minimum a sectioned area with independent lighting control. Most photo studios don't have this. Most proper video production spaces do.

The Manchester areas worth knowing

Ancoats is the obvious first call. I've used two studios in the M4 postcode belt specifically — both converted warehouse units that had genuine infrastructure, not a retrofit. Ceiling heights above 4.5m. Actual 3-phase power. Ground-level loading that fits a camera van. The talent areas in both had proper mirror rigs for make-up, which shouldn't be remarkable but somehow still is.

The thing about Ancoats that doesn't get said enough: it became a creative production area slowly, over about fifteen years, which means the infrastructure decisions were mostly made by people who'd actually worked on sets. The studios there tend to have sensible socket placement. Near the rig positions, not on the opposite wall from where any sane gaffer would stand.

Northern Quarter is trickier. The aesthetic is unbeatable — exposed brick, cast iron columns, original timber floors — but the electrics in some of those Victorian units haven't been meaningfully upgraded since someone put in a consumer unit in 1997. Always ask for the specific circuit capacity in writing before you book. I've been promised 32A and arrived to find a 16A socket fitted with a 32A adaptor. That's not the same thing. Not even close.

Salford Quays and MediaCityUK are a different proposition altogether. It's broadcast infrastructure — studios set up for live production, long-term tenants, complicated access arrangements. A few spaces around there will take short-notice fashion hire bookings, but you're often working around the constraints of a space that isn't primarily designed for your brief, and the rates reflect the postcode more than the functionality. It's not my first call.

Trafford Park is underrated. Big converted industrial units, some of which have ceiling heights hitting 6m or above. Drive-in access. Lower rates than Ancoats — often by £100–£150 per day — with the trade-off being distance from the city centre. If your talent is coming by train, that's worth factoring in. If everyone's driving or in a crew van, it's barely a consideration.

The power conversation you need to have before you book

Every studio in Manchester with production pretensions will say they have "3-phase power available." What that means in practice varies enormously.

Here are the actual questions I now ask before committing to any booking:

Total three-phase supply in amps — 32A three-phase gets you through most mid-scale fashion video setups; 63A three-phase is the figure I want if I'm running HMIs alongside LEDs
How many separate circuits? A single 32A feed is useful. That same 32A split across four 16A sub-circuits is much more useful — you're not killing everything if one lamp trips the board
Is the domestic ring main separate from the 3-phase supply? You want your hair and make-up station and your camera monitors on completely different circuits from your lighting rig
Is there a distro box on site, or do you need to bring your own?
What's the fuse protection situation — MCBs or the older fuse-wire type? Some Manchester conversions still have older consumer units. Not a dealbreaker but worth knowing before your gaffer arrives.

In London I've started assuming nothing and bringing my own 32A tail-in adaptor with a six-way distro box. In Manchester I've found that production-grade studios are more often genuinely set up properly — but I still ask the questions, in writing, before I pay the deposit.

Rates: what I've actually paid in 2026

For a full production-grade fashion video day in Manchester — that's a studio with 4m+ ceiling, 32A 3-phase or better, proper loading access, changing facilities with mirrors and rails, and basic grip on site — rates in 2026 sit around £500–£600+VAT for a 10-hour block. Some include basic lighting packages. Some don't.

Galleon Studios in Manchester lists their studio from around £545+VAT for a 10-hour day including their in-house lighting rig. That's roughly the midpoint of what I've seen across serious production spaces in the area.

Overtime is typically priced at £45–£65 per hour after the agreed wrap time — always confirm this in the contract because the gap between studios is big enough to matter when you're running ninety minutes over at 8pm.

For comparison: equivalent spec in East London — Hackney Wick, Stratford, Bermondsey — runs £700–£950+VAT for a full production day. That differential is real. On a three-day campaign it's the difference between having a second shooting day in the budget or not.

Talent areas and changing rooms

This is one of Manchester's genuine edges over London equivalents at the same price point. The better Ancoats and Trafford Park studios have proper talent areas — dedicated changing rooms with full-length mirrors, a garment rail with hanging space, and enough power at the mirror for a full hair and make-up setup. A stylist trying to steam a look two metres from the principal set, in the same room where the director is framing up, is a very specific kind of production stress that I try hard to avoid.

Make-up areas are where listings consistently lie by omission. The listing says "make-up area." The reality is sometimes a folding table with a clip-on ring light. Always ask for photos of the make-up area specifically. It almost never appears in the main gallery.

Loading access is consistently better than London equivalents. Ground-level loading, or a proper hydraulic dock, is close to standard at the production-capable Manchester studios I've used. I've unloaded a full camera van — bodies, lenses, a complete grip package, a van's worth of C-stands — in twenty minutes at a Manchester studio where the same operation in Hackney took forty-five because the goods lift was too narrow for a case.

The one genuine weakness: kit rental

If you forget something, or something breaks, Manchester's rental ecosystem is thinner than London's. In London I can call Procam or Calumet and have a replacement in front of me by 10am the same day. In Manchester the equivalent is harder — fewer same-day options, longer distances between suppliers. Pack your own spares. Bring backup batteries. Don't assume there's a quick solution nearby if an Aputure LS 600d Pro head stops firing at 11am.

Specialist crew is the other gap. Senior DPs with specific rigs, experienced set builders, art directors who know the brief before you brief them — the pool is smaller. On a production where you're bringing crew from London anyway, it doesn't matter. On a job where you want to build a local Manchester crew, plan further ahead than you would in the capital.

My shortlist criteria for a Manchester fashion video studio

In order of importance: minimum 4.5m ceiling height (not "approximately 4m"), documented 32A 3-phase or higher supply, proper talent changing room with mirrors and rails, ground-level or dock loading access, and a production power circuit separate from domestic supply. A kitchen's a bonus. A second room or sectioned B-roll area is near-essential for anything beyond a single-look shoot.

The studios that check those boxes in Manchester genuinely compare to production spaces that cost 40–60% more in London. Not that it's cheaper (though it usually is), but that the spec-to-price ratio makes sense for mid-scale fashion production in a way it often doesn't in the capital.
