Flat-lay gets treated like the easy studio format. No models, no direction, no cyc wall to keep pristine. Just products on a surface, camera pointing straight down, done.

And then you book a studio without a ceiling-mounted camera arm, spend 40 minutes rigging a makeshift overhead from two C-stands and a magic arm, and the whole thing wobbles every time someone walks across the floor. Not as easy as it sounds. Just a different set of constraints that people underestimate until they're in the room with a frustrated art director watching the clock.

The camera position problem

In a standard studio, the camera sits on a tripod at eye level. In flat-lay, it's directly overhead — typically 1.2 to 2.4 metres above the shooting surface, depending on your focal length and how much of the scene you're capturing. That position needs a stable, vibration-free mount. And most general photography studios aren't designed for it.

What you want is either a fixed ceiling mount — a proper armature bolted to ceiling joists with a 3/8" thread fitting for a ball head — or a heavy column arm like a Manfrotto 131DDB or similar counterweighted boom that's stable enough to hold a mirrorless body and a 100mm macro without introducing micro-vibration between frames. The luxury version is a ceiling rail system where you can slide the camera mount over different surface areas without re-rigging. Worth specifically searching for if overhead is your regular shooting mode.

What you don't want is improvising with a pair of A-clamp magic arms and a hope. I've done it. The shots are usable — just — but you spend the whole day babying the rig between frames and wincing every time someone moves suddenly. It's slow, it's stressful, and you end up rejecting 30% of frames for camera shake you can't explain to the client.

Why the floor matters more than the backdrop

In standard photography, the floor mostly matters for what's behind or beneath the subject. In flat-lay, the floor or shooting surface IS the composition. This changes the booking checklist significantly.

The easiest setup is a studio with a dedicated flat-lay table with interchangeable surface boards — white, grey, black, marble effect, aged oak, raw concrete texture. Some London product studios have exactly this, and it's worth paying a small premium for it if your brief requires multiple surface options in the same booking. Building surface changes yourself with separate boards adds load-in time and setup time that compounds across a commercial day.

If you're working on the actual studio floor — large-format layouts, anything needing more than about 1.5 metres of surface area — then what the floor is made of matters. Polished concrete looks great on camera but picks up every reflection from your overhead lights unless you shoot at exactly the right angle. Vinyl studio flooring in white or grey is more forgiving. Laying a paper roll — 2.72 metres wide in your choice of colour — solves most surface problems, but you need to confirm in advance whether the studio can supply it, and whether you can lay your own without damaging what's below.

Lighting for flat-lay: what actually works

The standard approach for flat-lay lighting is a large softbox positioned directly overhead — something like an Aputure Light Dome II or similar, 90cm across minimum — giving clean, even surface illumination with minimal directional shadow. For product categories where shadow is part of the aesthetic (jewellery, textured objects, clothing with interesting weaves), a single lateral source with a large diffusion frame can do beautiful things. But even then, you're positioning that source at a very acute angle relative to the surface.

The issue in most studios is that the lighting grid was designed for eye-level shooting. The boom arms go out to the side at 90 degrees from a vertical stand. Getting an Aputure 600d or a Profoto B10 Plus directly overhead requires either a ceiling-mounted point or a heavy counterweighted boom — a Manfrotto 131, a C-stand with a long arm, or equivalent. If the studio doesn't have that infrastructure built in, you're constructing it yourself from floor stands, and that adds 20–40 minutes to your setup time.

Some studios have a high-output LED panel fixed to the ceiling — a permanent overhead source you just switch on. These vary enormously in quality. A proper daylight-balanced panel with CRI 95 or above gives you clean, accurate colour rendering for product work. A cheap panel with a narrow spectrum makes your reds muddy and your whites slightly green — problems you'll fight in post rather than solving in the room. Always ask the LED spec or bring a colour reference card to test on arrival.

What focal length needs what ceiling height

This is the arithmetic that catches people out when they're booking without running the numbers first.

A 50mm equivalent focal length at 1.5 metres of shooting height covers roughly 45cm x 30cm of surface — fine for small products, cosmetics, jewellery. At 2 metres, the same lens covers about 60cm x 40cm. At 2.5 metres — which requires at minimum a 3-metre ceiling to give you room for the mount, the camera body, and some clearance — you're up to roughly 75cm x 50cm, which starts to handle medium-sized lifestyle props and clothing flat-lays.

For large-format flat-lay — full outfit lays, book covers, a spread of food across a large board — you need either a wider lens (which introduces geometric distortion you'll fight in post) or a lot more ceiling height. A 28mm equivalent at 2 metres covers about 90cm x 60cm. At 3 metres you're up to 135cm x 90cm, which starts to accommodate the larger layouts. But that 3-metre shooting height requires a 4-metre ceiling minimum. Most studios in London top out at 3.5 metres.

Know what you're shooting before you book, work out the ceiling height you actually need, and confirm it with the studio. "High ceiling" in a listing can mean 2.8m, which isn't high for flat-lay purposes.

Studio size requirements for flat-lay work

Here's where flat-lay actually works in your favour versus other formats. You don't need a 10-metre infinity wall or a drive-in loading bay. A dedicated flat-lay setup functions well in a room as small as 4 by 4 metres, provided the ceiling clears the height you need for your focal length. That physical footprint translates to cost: in London where studio hire averages around £50/hr for a standard space, smaller flat-lay rooms can often be found for £35–£45/hr.

Some studios will even hire out dedicated flat-lay setups by the half-hour for short runs. Worth asking about directly, especially for e-commerce runs where you've got 40 SKUs to shoot in a morning. The maths work out considerably better than booking a full studio hour for every ten items.

Studios in London worth looking at for overhead product work

For DIY flat-lay with your own shooter, smaller product studios in Dalston, Hackney Wick, and Tottenham often have the right footprint and ceiling height at lower rates than the central or south London options. But confirm the ceiling mount situation before you book. Most won't have one, and "I'll sort it with C-stands" is a plan that costs you 40 minutes of setup on the day.

The flat-lay studio booking checklist

Seven questions I ask before committing to any flat-lay booking:

Is there a fixed ceiling mount or heavy counterweighted boom for the overhead camera position?
What's the ceiling height above the shooting surface?
What surfaces are provided, or can I lay my own? Are there fees for laying paper?
What overhead light sources are available, and what's their CRI rating?
What's the power supply — 13A ring main or dedicated circuit for lighting?
Is there a flat-lay table, or am I working directly on the floor?
Can the studio supply paper rolls in the colour I need, or do I source my own?

Get clear answers to those seven and you'll know within five minutes whether the studio can handle the work at the standard your brief requires.

Building your own flat-lay setup vs hiring

The question comes up regularly, especially for e-commerce clients doing high volumes of consistent product imagery. A 2-metre-square shooting table, a good high-CRI LED overhead panel on an arm mount, and a ceiling bracket can be put together for £600–£900 and handles most small-to-medium product flat-lay work. The break-even point against hiring a London studio at £40/hr for half-day sessions is roughly 8–10 booking days.

But if your products are large (anything over 80cm in longest dimension), if the surface aesthetic is defined by your creative brief, or if you need multiple surface options across a single session, a proper studio setup is still the practical answer. And for brand clients where image usage rights and shoot documentation matter, the studio address and invoice add credibility that a home setup often can't match.

Flat-lay for food and recipe content: different rules

Food flat-lay has a few specific requirements that differ from product work. The shooting window is short — especially with hot food or ice cream — which means setup has to be fast and the rig has to be stable from the first frame rather than dialled in over 15 minutes of adjustments. Ceiling height is less critical because you're shooting close. The surface texture matters a lot — brushed metal, velvet, raw wood all read differently and most clients have strong opinions.

Cosmetics and beauty: clean, high-CRI light is essential. Any colour cast shows on skin-toned packaging. I've seen cosmetics flat-lays ruined by a studio LED panel with a green spike — the moisturiser looks like it belongs on a different product line in the final image. Bring a colour checker and test the light before you start.

Clothing and accessories: the 28mm-at-2-metres maths applies here. You need ceiling height. A full outfit lay on an average adult body is 180cm long; at 1:1 scale that's a camera-to-subject distance of about 1.8 metres. Add the lens-to-sensor back focus and the mount hardware and you're looking at 2.2–2.5 metres from ceiling mount to floor. A 3-metre ceiling minimum is not optional for clothing work.
