Food delivery and meal kit photography sits in an awkward middle ground between food photography and product photography — and most studios are set up for one or the other, not both. I've photographed meal kit content in a traditional food studio with a full kitchen and hated the lighting. I've also photographed it in a sleek product studio with no preparation facilities and spent an hour improvising somewhere to plate up ingredients. Neither was right.

This is the brief that requires a specific combination of studio elements that most listings don't frame together. Here's what that combination looks like.

What the brief actually involves

Meal kit and food delivery photography typically covers several distinct shoot types, often in the same day:

Ingredient flat-lays: Box contents spread on a surface, styled to suggest freshness and quantity. Top-down, overhead rig, controlled even light.
Recipe result shots: Plated or prepared dishes photographed as hero product. Natural-style light, styled surfaces, selective depth of field.
Process photography: Cooking steps, preparation, chopping, mixing — this is the content that makes it into app interfaces and instructional card design.
Lifestyle context shots: A person cooking, eating, sharing. This needs studio space with enough room for a styled kitchen vignette or a dining area setup.

Not every brand needs all four. But the brief usually involves at least two of them, and they have different studio requirements.

The kitchen question

The assumption most people make is that food delivery photography needs a kitchen studio. It does need access to preparation facilities — but the distinction between a studio with a kitchen and a studio with prep facilities matters.

A traditional kitchen studio — the kind built for TV commercials and cookery content — has a hero kitchen set designed to look photogenic, with fully functional appliances, practical gas hobs, extraction, and styled surfaces. For content that features a full cooking sequence or a styled kitchen environment, this is what you need. But the hero kitchen set is the most expensive part of that studio, and you're paying for it whether or not your brief uses it.

Meal kit brands often don't need a photogenic kitchen to cook in. They need a prep space — a clean, well-lit area with a surface to work on, access to a hob or hot plate for heating certain elements, running water, and enough room for a food stylist to work without being on top of the camera setup. Some studios that aren't billed as kitchen studios have exactly this — a prep kitchen off the main shooting area with basic functional equipment. They're often cheaper than dedicated kitchen studios, and for a brief that isn't shooting the kitchen itself, they're the right choice.

Surface spec for flat-lay and tabletop

Ingredient flat-lays are the bread-and-butter of meal kit photography. And the surface they're shot on matters as much as the light.

The surfaces I use most for this brief:

Matt white or off-white vinyl sheet: Clean, clean-reads-as-contemporary, easy to wipe between setups. Doesn't add colour cast under warm continuous LED.
Slate or stone-effect boards: Works for premium brand positioning — gives the "farmer's market" aesthetic that a lot of meal kit brands are going for. But heavier and harder to source if the studio doesn't already have them.
Worn wood: Styled, approachable, warm. A lot of direct-to-consumer food brands are using this. Again — if the studio has it in their prop inventory, great. If not, it's another thing to bring.

The studios with substantial prop libraries — good food photography studios often have six to eight different surface options plus a range of crockery, textiles and small props — save meaningful time on this brief. Check the prop inventory before you book, not after.

Continuous lighting: why it's the right choice for food delivery content

Most food photography is shot on strobe. But meal kit and delivery content often ends up in video as well as stills — for app interfaces, social media, instructional content — and strobe doesn't work for video.

Continuous LED for this brief has two advantages: consistent output across a full shoot day, and the ability to run the same setup for both stills and video without a lighting changeover. An Aputure LS 600d Pro at around 720W gives clean daylight-balanced output and is controllable enough to fine-tune colour temperature for food work — this matters because warm sources make food look appealing, but too warm shifts into orange and looks wrong for fresh ingredients.

The trade-off: continuous LED at the power levels needed for sharp product photography draws significant wattage. Check the studio's power spec before you commit — specifically whether there are independent 16A or 32A circuits in the shooting area separate from the catering prep space. A studio where the food prep area and the shooting area share a ring main is going to trip breakers the moment someone turns the hob on.

Food styling logistics

A food stylist on a meal kit brief typically arrives with more kit than the photographer. Blowtorches, oil sprays, Q-tips, tweezers, colour gels, spare ingredients, heat plates, an ice chest. They need a prep surface near the shooting area, not across a corridor or in a separate room.

The studio layouts that work best for this brief have a clear prep/styling zone adjacent to the shooting surface — close enough that a styled element can move from prep to camera within thirty seconds. Studios where the prep area is a separate room with a closed door between it and the shooting floor add four to six minutes to every setup. On a twenty-setup brief, that's an hour and a half.

What to check before you book

The questions I ask every studio before a food delivery or meal kit brief:

What's the prep kitchen setup — full kitchen, prep kitchen, or hot plate and sink only?
Is the prep area adjacent to the shooting surface, or in a separate space?
What's the power spec — specifically, is the food prep area on a separate circuit from the shooting area?
What's the prop inventory for food and tabletop work? Can I see a list or photographs?
What's the natural light situation for overhead shots — is there a skylight or overhead rig, or is it side-window only?

The studio that can answer all five clearly is set up for this brief. The studio that answers "we have a kitchen" and can't tell you anything else probably isn't.
