Ghost mannequin photography — or invisible mannequin, if your client's brief uses that phrasing — sounds simple until you've lost four hours to background removal because the studio you booked had ambient light bleed you didn't notice until post. Been there. Not fun.

The technique itself is straightforward: shoot garments on a hollow mannequin with removable sections, composite out the mannequin in post, end up with a floating garment that reads as worn without a model. But the studio conditions have to be right, or the compositing becomes an expensive nightmare.

The space you actually need

A lot of fashion photographers try to squeeze ghost mannequin work into spaces that are too tight. Technically, a 10 × 10 foot set area will work. But realistically, once you've got the mannequin in position, a backdrop stand, three light stands, and room to step back to a proper working distance, you want more than that.

I'd say 5m × 5m of usable floor is a comfortable minimum for a full-day ghost mannequin session. Not the room size — the shooting floor, clear of obstructions. If you're doing a big catalogue with multiple garment categories (outerwear, knitwear, trousers, accessories), having room to move the mannequin position without dismantling the whole setup saves time.

And ceiling height matters for the backdrop. If you're running a 2.7m seamless paper roll on a crossbar and you want the paper to curve at the base to create a floor — not crease — you need enough overhead clearance. Anything below 3.5m starts causing problems with full-length garment shots.

Backdrop: white, and nothing else

White seamless paper. That's the answer. Not light grey, not off-white, not "we've got a white vinyl backdrop." Pure white paper seamless, and you need enough of it that the entire garment sits in a consistent white field when you shoot.

The reason it has to be paper rather than vinyl for this kind of work is the way paper handles reflections. Vinyl has a slight sheen that can throw inconsistent hot spots, which makes background removal at the shoulder edge — exactly where you need precision — harder than it needs to be. Paper is more forgiving in post.

Standard seamless paper rolls are 2.72m wide. For full-length garments shot at distance, this is usually sufficient. If you're doing very wide-shoulder outerwear or menswear with a strong horizontal line, position carefully — you can hit the edge of the frame faster than you'd expect.

Ask the studio: do they supply seamless paper rolls, and what's the replacement cost if you use more than anticipated? Some studios include one fresh roll in the day rate and charge for additional rolls (typically £10–20 per roll depending on brand). Know this before day one, not when you're three garments in and the paper's marked up.

Lighting: three points, precisely placed

Ghost mannequin work doesn't need exotic lighting. It needs consistent, repeatable lighting — which is actually harder than it sounds on a 30-garment day.

The standard setup is three-point: a key light (usually a large softbox, 90cm × 120cm minimum, positioned at 45 degrees to the garment), a fill light on the opposite side at lower power to kill the deep shadow, and a background light to keep the white paper at true white — which matters enormously for clean masking in Photoshop.

Some photographers add a fourth light on the backdrop, positioned low to eliminate any shadow cast by the mannequin base. This is worth doing if you're shooting anything with a wide hem or flare — a skirt, a coat, a pair of wide-leg trousers — where the base shadow can bleed under the garment edge.

Lock your exposure and don't touch it. Ghost mannequin days go wrong when someone bumps a light stand at garment twelve and the exposure shifts by half a stop. Same white balance throughout. Same aperture. Same flash power. If the studio you're hiring has a concrete floor, tape the light stand positions with gaffer at the start of the day. On a wooden floor, mark with chalk or just photograph your setup as a reference.

The mannequin itself

You need a hollow or invisible mannequin — not a solid dress form. The key feature is removable sections: the neck section pops off, the chest plate comes away, the arms are often removable too. This is what allows you to shoot the front and the inside of a garment separately and composite them in post to get that suspended, worn look.

If you're hiring rather than owning, some studios keep mannequins as part of their kit. Ask in advance: what sizes do they carry? A female form in a UK size 10–12 is common. Menswear mannequins are rarer. Children's sizes are rarer still. If the studio doesn't have the right form for your garment categories, you'll need to source your own or hire separately — mannequin rental companies in London typically charge £30–50 per day per form.

Lens and distance

A standard zoom like a 24-70mm at the long end, or a dedicated 50mm prime, works well for most ghost mannequin work. The goal is minimal distortion — you don't want barrel distortion making shoulders look dropped or sleeves look tapered. Shoot from far enough back that you're on the longer end of a zoom, rather than wide and close.

Tether your camera. Ghost mannequin days go faster when you're reviewing on a calibrated monitor alongside the client or studio manager rather than chimping on the back screen. You spot edge problems, exposure drift, and background light changes immediately rather than discovering them in post.

What most studios get wrong for this kind of work

Ambient light. A lot of hired studios — particularly older converted warehouse spaces — have windows that can't be fully blocked. Ghost mannequin work doesn't tolerate ambient light bleed because it shifts your shadow direction and colour temperature as the day progresses. The morning session looks different to the afternoon session, and that's a compositing headache.

Book a blackout studio, or at minimum confirm that the studio can achieve true blackout on the shooting wall. Ask what the lux reading is at the backdrop with all artificial lights off. A proper blackout environment gets you to near-zero.

The second thing studios get wrong: no rail space for garments. On a 30-look day, you need hanging space for finished garments (photographed) and prep garments (steamed and ready). If the studio doesn't have rail space — or if you're going to be fighting with the studio's own equipment for every metre of hanging bar — factor that into your logistics.

How many garments can you actually do in a day?

Honestly: eight to twelve finished, colour-corrected selects per hour is realistic for an experienced ghost mannequin photographer with a good assistant. Some shoot faster. But factor in steaming time, garment preparation, the occasional reshoot when a seam sits wrong, and client review — and a 30-garment brief is realistically a full eight-hour day, not a half-day.

If your client wants 60 garments in a day, either your rates need to reflect a genuine sprint or you need to be very honest about what's achievable without compromising quality. Ghost mannequin compositing on rushed, poorly lit shots takes three times longer than it does on well-exposed, clean originals.

Book the right space from the start

Studios that regularly host commercial fashion photography understand ghost mannequin work. They'll have a proper white backdrop setup, a blackout environment, enough power for a four-light rig, and usually a steam iron available. Studios that primarily do portrait or lifestyle work — lovely as they are — often aren't set up for the consistency this technique requires.

Ask studios directly: do they regularly host invisible mannequin shoots? If the answer is yes, ask to see some examples. If they don't know what you mean, you're probably looking at a mismatch.
