I shot a virtual presenter job in Winchester last March. Three-person panel, newsroom composite backgrounds, should have been a half-day setup. We'd booked a studio that listed green screen under its facilities. On paper, it had one. In practice: a painted wall with a wrinkle at head height, lit by two soft boxes aimed at the ceiling. Lovely for portraits. Useless for chroma.

The DoP called it a two-hour fix. I knew we'd be living with that spill in post for the next three weeks. We were.

Hampshire gets written off in studio conversations because it isn't London. But between Winchester, Southampton, Andover and the bits of the county in between, there are more purpose-built green screen facilities than you'd think — and the day rates are notably softer than anything you'll find in Shoreditch or Battersea.

Why Hampshire for a green screen shoot

The M3, M27 and A34 between them connect most of the county within ninety minutes of the M25. Southampton docklands puts you close to New Forest location days that often bookend studio work. If your talent is coming from Fareham, Eastleigh or Bournemouth, asking them to travel into Zone 2 for a half-day shoot is the kind of thing that adds a hundred quid to your budget in taxis before you've touched the camera.

The south coast has a reasonable production industry too — corporate video, e-learning, broadcast-format web content. That keeps several studios running without being entirely dependent on London day-trippers, which means the facilities get used and maintained rather than sitting empty and slowly deteriorating.

The studios worth knowing about

Videofrog Studios, Winchester

This is the one I should have booked on that Winchester job. Custom-built, soundproofed, specifically designed for chroma and video work. The green screen is fabric, not paint, and the room layout has separation built in — you're not shoehorning a green screen into a space designed for portraits and hoping for the best.

Ceiling clearance runs to five metres in the screen area. That matters the moment you have standing talent and need headroom above before the top of the frame. In a 3m ceiling room with a standard 3x6m roll, anyone above 1.75m is within hand's reach of the top edge of your screen. That's fine for head-and-shoulders; it's a problem the second the client brief says 'full body'.

Location is off the M3, Junction 9 roughly. Parking for a crew van. And because it's Winchester proper, not an industrial park on the edge of Eastleigh, the surrounding area is pleasant if a client wants to come down and watch.

Zealous Media, Winchester

A 64-square-metre space that switches between a white infinity cove and green screen. Their chroma fabric is imported from the States — they make a point of this because the colour consistency in domestically-sourced green screen fabric varies a lot, and the US kit tends to hold better in the lower price bracket.

The cove and the screen are lit from different positions. That sounds obvious but it isn't standard. Studios that use the same fixture layout for both setups are studios where you spend ninety minutes moving things before the green screen is usable. Separate positions mean both setups are pre-dialled.

There's an overhead lighting grid included in the hire. For green screen work, rigging your key sources off a grid avoids the floor spill problem that catches out crews who've brought freestanding stands. A Godox AD600 on a stand at 1.2 metres will put green on the bottom third of your talent. Rigged properly at four metres it won't. The grid makes that easy without needing a rigging day beforehand.

Hampshire Green Screen, Southampton

Based in Southampton rather than Winchester, which is why it doesn't surface in Hampshire-wide searches as often as it should. Part of a wider media studio offering that includes voiceover and podcast rooms.

Good for smaller productions — solo presenter work, e-learning modules, YouTube-format content where you need a green screen and a decent acoustic. Not where I'd send a five-camera panel production. But the voiceover room is a genuine bonus if you're cutting content where the audio needs to be recorded separately from the visual, and the rates reflect the smaller scale.

The Andover Studio

Andover town centre — further north than Winchester, which puts it between the county and the edge of Wiltshire. Useful if your crew is coming from the west, or you're combining the shoot with a Salisbury or Wiltshire location day.

More general-purpose than the Winchester options. Available for green screen with some planning, but it's not a permanent installation — check before booking because the setup time needs to be factored into your day rate. The flip side is that a general-purpose studio at a lower rate might suit a production that doesn't need a fully kitted chroma room and just needs a halfway decent background swap in post.

Tannery Film Studios

A production facility rather than a photographer's hire studio. They run crews, camera and lighting rental, grip hire. Green screen is available. The upside: you can hire an Aputure LS 600d Pro or an Arri SkyPanel from them directly and keep your van weight down. The downside: bundled kit packages push the day cost higher than dry-hire elsewhere.

Worth calling if the production is large enough to justify it. Less ideal if you have an established kit setup you prefer and you're just after a well-lit chroma room at a fair rate.

What to actually check before booking

Ceiling height and separation distance

The minimum I'll accept for seated interview work is 3.5 metres clearance. Standing full-body — 4.5m, or I look elsewhere. At 3m, a standard 3x6m seamless roll leaves you almost no headroom above a standing person if you're shooting anything wider than head-and-shoulders.

Separation distance from screen to talent matters as much as height. You want at least 1.8 metres between the talent's back plane and the screen surface. Less than that and the green bouncing off the screen hits the back of a jacket and turns into a compositing problem no amount of spill suppression in Premiere Pro solves cleanly. I've spent hours in post fixing this. I don't do it any more — I check separation before I book.

Screen surface and colour reference

Ask directly: is it fabric, paint, or portable panel? Painted walls aren't always bad — a properly done paint job in a room designed for it can be excellent. But a lot of studios paint a wall green and call it a green screen facility without thinking about the colour standard. Chroma green is a specific shade — Roscoe Chroma Green or roughly Pantone 354. Not 'kind of green'. Ask what they used and when it was last touched up.

Portable panel systems — Lastolite, Westcott — are fine for smaller setups but wrinkle under tension and typically max out at about 3 metres wide. Two people side-by-side stretches a portable panel. Three people will show the join.

The lighting rig

The studio should have a dedicated lighting setup for the screen, separate from the talent lighting positions. Two or three soft boxes pointing at a fabric screen from the same angle as your key light is a recipe for uneven density and hot spots that make your chroma key mask inconsistent frame to frame. The gold standard is a row of LED panels raking the screen from above, overlapping slightly, giving even coverage across the whole surface.

Ask whether the green screen lighting is permanently rigged or set up on request. Permanently rigged is almost always better — it's been tested and balanced for that room. 'We set it up when clients need it' means someone adjusts it differently every time.

Power

Most Hampshire studios run on a standard 13A ring main. Fine for LED-based setups — the Aputure LS 600d Pro draws 720W at full power, a pair of Profoto B10s at 250Ws each run on their own batteries. The problem comes if you're bringing HMI or older tungsten fixtures. A 2.5kW HMI ballast pulls 14 to 20 amps depending on the model. That's two 13A sockets minimum, and not all studio ring mains handle simultaneous peak draw from multiple circuits.

Specifically ask: how many independent circuits does the studio run? Are the green screen area and talent area on separate circuits? Can they provide a 16A or 32A socket for heavier kit? Some of the smaller Hampshire facilities haven't been wired for heavy production loads. Find out at the booking stage, not at 9am when the breaker trips and resets the location's entire Wi-Fi router.

Rates in Hampshire in 2026

Hampshire isn't cheap but it's meaningfully softer than London. For a purpose-built green screen facility, you're looking at roughly £350–£550 for a half day, £550–£900 for a full day. Some studios bundle a basic lighting kit; others are dry-hire.

Compare that with a properly kitted green screen room in Hackney or Battersea — £180–£280 per hour is typical, which is £1,440–£2,240 for an eight-hour day. Hampshire doesn't automatically win once you factor in crew travel and per diems from London. But for a south-coast production where talent and some crew are already in the region, the numbers tilt considerably in Hampshire's favour.

Things that catch people out

Hampshire studios are less likely to offer 24/7 access or after-hours flexibility than London facilities. Most run on standard production hours — 8am to 6pm is a typical window. If you need a 5am rigging call or a late-night wrap for a broadcast-live show, check this explicitly. It's not always a no, but it's not always a yes either.

Cancellation terms vary more in smaller facilities than in London studio complexes. I've seen Hampshire studios operate on a 48-hour full-refund policy; I've also seen 50% non-refundable on any notice under seven days. Read the terms before the deposit, not after.

Parking is generally better than London — most facilities outside Winchester city centre have dedicated van access. But confirm loading clearance for a large sprinter before you turn up with a 3.5-tonne van and find the entrance is under a 2.5m barrier.

If the crew is coming from London

The M3 is your route. Junction 9 or 10 puts you in Winchester in under 90 minutes from the M25 on a reasonable early start. Allow 30 extra minutes if you're loading a kit van south of the river — the A3 and A23 between 6.30 and 8am will absorb any margin you had.

A workable Winchester green screen day from London: 7am van load in Hackney or Park Royal, 9am studio call, a two-hour setup window before client arrives at eleven, five hours of production, 5pm wrap, back to London by seven. It works. But only if the motorway cooperates.

Searching for Hampshire studios

The facilities above are a good starting list. But search creativestudiohire.com for green screen spaces tagged Hampshire and Southampton — the directory pulls in rooms across the south coast that don't always surface in general Google searches. Some of the best-value green screen rooms in the region are in business parks between Basingstoke and Eastleigh that appear in specialist directories but not on event-venue platforms.
