Green screen shoots go wrong in specific, preventable ways. The screen isn't evenly lit, so you get hotspots that key out at different thresholds. The studio isn't big enough for the lighting rig, so you end up with spill on the talent. Or the floor return is a mat of battered felt that creases under a camera move. I've had all three in the same day, in a studio that cost £90 an hour.

In 2026 the London green screen market is more varied than it was two years ago — more studios have invested properly, and a few of the genuinely good ones have become reliable enough to trust on a deadline job. Here's where I'd book, and why.

What separates a good green screen studio from a terrible one

Size first. The minimum working distance for a decent key is roughly 3m between the talent and the screen. Add the space behind the talent for back-lighting (1–1.5m) and the camera distance for a mid-shot (2.5–3m) and you're already at 6.5–7.5m of depth before you've thought about lighting positions. Studios that advertise green screen in rooms smaller than 6m deep are, in my experience, lying about what's achievable.

Width matters too. A cyclorama-style green screen where the floor sweeps up to meet the wall — with no visible seam — is the only way to do full-body shots without rotoscoping the feet. Flat screens on a frame are fine for talking heads and close-ups. For anything from the waist down or wider, you need the cyc curve.

And the floor covering. Green felt or paper floor return gets creased, dirty, and eventually un-keyable. Any studio doing serious green screen work should have a painted cyc floor in chroma green — more durable, easier to light consistently, and it doesn't shift colour as it ages the way fabric does.

Lighting: the thing that actually matters most

You can have a perfect studio and still ruin a green screen shoot with bad lighting. The screen needs to be lit evenly — within half a stop across the whole surface — at a level roughly 1 stop higher than the talent exposure. That requires either a lot of soft, diffused light (large HMI or big LED panels well spread) or a dedicated overhead strip rig.

For a 4m wide screen, I typically run two Aputure 600d Pros — 720W each, 5600K daylight balanced — through large diffusion panels on either side of the screen, feathered in toward the centre. That gets me even illumination without hotspots. It pulls 1,440W from the ring main, which means the studio needs a proper 32A supply on that circuit, separate from the talent lighting.

Studios that have thought about this properly have dedicated screen-lighting circuits. The ones that haven't will ask you to run everything off the same breaker, which is how you end up tripping the board mid-take when the AC unit cuts in.

Studios I've used in London this year

Broadley Studio in Paddington runs a green screen setup that I've used three times. The screen is cyclorama-style with a floor curve, the dedicated lighting circuit is a genuine 32A supply, and the booth is deep enough for talent at full length. Rates around £80–90 per hour, with half-day packages available. It's a broadcast-grade setup — the kind where the chromakey comes back clean in post without remedial work.

Cineview Studios has a green screen room that I used once for a social content brief. More compact than Broadley — the depth works for talking-head and waist-up shots but I wouldn't try full-body movement in it. At around £60 per hour it's the right price for what it delivers.

MR Studios in Crouch End has a Studio 3 green screen space that includes kit in the hire rate. I haven't used it personally but colleagues have found it solid for presenter pieces and virtual background work.

PS Spaces near Waterloo has a green screen option that I've heard works well for photography applications — static keys, controlled conditions. Less appropriate for video production that needs motion and continuity across a shoot day.

The Islington and North London cluster

Islington green screen studios average around £80 per hour — slightly higher than the London average — and several of them cater specifically to broadcast and corporate video. London Broadcast in Marylebone is one that's come up repeatedly in recommendations from camera operators I trust: purpose-built for broadcast green screen with proper key light rigs pre-installed.

The cluster around Finchley and Dollis Hill is cheaper — starting around £40 per hour — and some of those spaces have been running green screen setups for over a decade. The infrastructure is more variable but the price is right for social content or test shoots. Worth a viewing before a paid production commitment.

What the rate picture looks like in 2026

London green screen studios average around £60 per hour across the market. In Islington and the more established broadcast areas, expect £70–90. At the budget end — outer London, less prestigious postcodes — you'll find £25–40 per hour, which usually means a flat fabric screen, no dedicated lighting circuit, and a room that's fine for YouTube thumbnails and less fine for anything going to broadcast.

Half-day rates (four to five hours) are typically £250–400 for mid-tier London green screen rooms. Full-day rates at the broadcast end run £600–900, which sounds expensive until you account for the editing time saved when the key comes back clean.

Platform fees add to this. Peerspace takes 10–15% from the guest; many green screen studios in London list on Peerspace for visibility. The studios that have their own booking pages are usually willing to take direct bookings at the listed rate without the platform surcharge — worth asking, especially if you're booking more than a half-day.

The technical check I run before booking

I send five questions to every green screen studio before I view:

Screen depth from talent position to camera position — I want 6m minimum for anything with movement
Whether the floor return is painted cyc or fabric — painted only for production work
Dedicated screen lighting circuit amperage, separate from the main studio ring
What the included or available screen lighting is — type, output, positioning options
Whether the studio has an on-site technician or I'm operating the lighting rig myself

That fifth question catches studios where the green screen is nominally available but nobody on site knows how to light it properly. A studio technician who has lit the screen a hundred times is worth a lot — they know exactly where to feather the panels and how to avoid the one corner that always goes hot.

When to hire in kit vs rely on the studio

Studio-included green screen lighting rigs vary enormously. Some are properly specced HMI or LED arrays that genuinely light the screen evenly. Others are consumer LED panels pointed at the wall and hoped for the best.

For anything going to broadcast or to a streaming platform, I bring my own lighting regardless of what the studio includes. Two Aputure 600d Pros and a pair of large scrim diffusers in a flight case. I know what those lights do and I can set the screen up in 25 minutes to a standard I trust. For social content or internal comms — lower stakes, more forgiving post pipeline — I'll use the studio kit and accept the output.

The decision usually comes down to what happens if the key isn't clean. On a broadcast job, a bad key costs two hours of VFX time minimum. On a social post, it costs a Premiere Pro minute. Your tolerance for that post-production risk determines whether you hire in kit or use what's there.

Virtual production as the alternative

Virtual production LED walls are increasingly available in London — the Silvertown Studios in E16 is one example — and for certain applications they replace the green screen entirely. No keying, no spill problems, no need for perfect screen lighting. But the rate is significantly higher: LED wall days start at £800–1,200 and require more pre-production time for the plate content.

Green screen is still the more accessible option for most budgets in 2026. The technology works when the fundamentals are right, and in London there are now enough studios that have invested in the fundamentals that you shouldn't have to take risks on spaces that haven't.
