Headshot photography has very different studio requirements from most other briefs. It's not about floor area. It's not about ceiling height. It's mostly about light quality, quiet, and whether a client can walk in from a tube station without needing fifteen minutes to decompress.

I've shot corporate headshots in somewhere north of twenty London studios over the past four years. The brief is always some version of: individual or small group, clean background, quick turnaround, client-facing from start to finish. And the studios that make that easy are not always the ones with the best kit lists.

Here's what I look for — and where in London I end up booking.

Light quality over light quantity

For headshots, soft and directional matters more than powerful and abundant. You're not lighting a car on a white cyc or a pack shot on a seamless. You need one key source that wraps cleanly, a fill that doesn't fight it, and a background that holds consistent tone across a day's worth of subjects.

Studios with good daylight have a real advantage here — specifically those north-facing windows that give you consistent, diffused natural light without direct sun swinging through the afternoon. I've done full-day headshot sessions at a couple of rooms in Bermondsey and one in Dalston where the daylight was so good I ran a Profoto B10 as the only artificial source, dialled back most of the time.

But continuity is the other side of that coin. Daylight changes. If you're doing 40 people over a day and the sky goes from overcast to bright between session 12 and session 13, you've got a matching problem. For big group jobs — a law firm's entire London team, a media company doing 60 staff headshots in one day — I lean toward artificial setups where I can lock everything in and hold it. A Profoto D2 at 500Ws through a 120cm octabox, a silver V-flat as fill, a Godox SL-200 on the background. Same result at 9am as at 5pm.

The light modifier matters. A big octabox (90cm+) or a strip softbox gives a qualitatively different result from a speedlight and umbrella. If a studio's "included kit" is a single umbrella and a ring light, bring your own heads. Most headshot-spec studios in Shoreditch and Hackney have Profoto heads available to hire alongside the room.

Background options

Most corporate headshot clients want a clean background. Grey, white, or occasionally a warm cream. Not a brick wall, not an infinity cyc unless they specifically ask for that editorial style.

A seamless paper roll in 2.7m width is the standard workaround — it sets up in five minutes and covers most backgrounds that aren't suitable. But it requires a proper backdrop stand or wall mount rated to the roll weight, which is heavier than it looks when wet (don't ask). Better studios have proper wall-mount systems. Cheaper ones have a metal stand that tips over when somebody breathes.

Some studios now have painted feature walls in neutral tones — a deep charcoal or warm grey — that shoot beautifully for the right client. These can be a real differentiator if the client wants something warmer than a white seamless. Worth asking on the viewing what background options are actually on the floor vs what's in the listing photos from three years ago.

Ceiling height: lower than you think is fine

For headshots, 2.5m is genuinely enough. You're not flying overhead rigs or hanging anything above the subject. The extra ceiling clearance that music video and commercial productions need is irrelevant here.

This is actually useful — some of the best small headshot studios in London are converted residential spaces or ground-floor retail units with 2.6–2.8m ceilings and genuinely excellent window light. They can't do cyclorama work. But for a portrait brief, they're better than a big warehouse studio with a 5.5m ceiling and a cavernous echo.

The client experience matters

Corporate headshots bring in clients who are not photographers. They've been told to "go to the studio on Tuesday." They are, on some level, nervous. The studio experience directly affects how they perform in front of the camera.

Location matters a lot here. I try to book studios within a ten-minute walk of a tube station when the client is coming from central London. Shoreditch High Street (Overground), Dalston Junction, London Bridge — all work. Park Royal or Fish Island do not work unless everyone's driving, because a client who's arrived tired and stressed from an unfamiliar journey is a harder portrait subject than one who walked five minutes from Old Street.

Reception or waiting areas. A green room with a mirror and somewhere to leave bags. A kettle. These are minor things that make a real difference to client confidence on the day. The best headshot studios I've used in Shoreditch and Bermondsey have all had proper reception spaces. Some of the cheaper rooms in Hackney Wick do not — you collect your client from the pavement, which is nobody's ideal greeting.

Sound and quiet

Headshots are conversations. You're talking to your subject throughout — directing, reassuring, making slightly awkward small talk to get a natural expression out of a solicitor who hasn't been photographed since their university graduation.

A studio that shares walls with a recording session, a metalworking shop, or an active gym is the wrong studio for headshots. The sound bleeds through in a way that won't ruin a music video shoot but will absolutely disrupt a quiet portrait session.

I always ask about adjacent tenants or activities when viewing a studio I'm booking for headshot work. Not every studio knows the answer — but the ones that do and are honest about it go up in my estimation immediately.

Makeup and changing

Half the corporate headshot jobs I shoot involve a makeup artist, even if it's just a quick powder session to reduce shine. A good makeup position — good lighting, a mirror, a dedicated socket — makes that work. A studio without one means the makeup artist is working from a chair in the corner of the main room, which creates its own complications.

Some studios have a separate prep room for this. Others have a spot in the studio marked with a ring light and a mirror. Either is fine. Nothing, or a single socket hidden behind a rack of equipment, is a problem.

What I pay for headshot studios in London

For a half-day headshot booking (4 hours, 9am–1pm or 1pm–5pm), I'm typically paying £180–280 at the kind of rooms I keep going back to in Shoreditch, Hackney and Bermondsey. Budget options in Dalston and Stoke Newington run as low as £100 for a half-day — the light is often decent, the kit is often minimal, and the locations are consistently interesting.

Full-day hire (8–10 hours) for a proper headshot studio in Shoreditch or London Bridge: £320–480. Rates at premium spaces in Fitzrovia or the West End can run to £600+/day. I've never found a headshot brief that justified the West End premium — the light isn't better, and getting clients there from Canary Wharf takes twenty minutes more each way.

Studios at the lower end (£80–120/day) are usually raw-space rentals — you're bringing everything including stands and paper. Studios at the upper end (£400+) typically include modifiers, backdrops, and staff. Where the value sits depends entirely on what you're bringing and what the client expects when they walk in.

Areas I actually book in 2026

Shoreditch and Bethnal Green remain my go-to for client-facing work. Good transport links, reasonable studio quality, familiarity for clients from central London. Rates have crept up — where I was paying £45/hr for a Shoreditch studio in 2023, I'm now paying £55–60/hr for the same space.

Bermondsey and London Bridge have become more interesting over the past two years. Several converted railway arch spaces have dedicated portrait rooms that are genuinely excellent for natural-light headshots. Rates are competitive — £40–55/hr — and the SE1 postcode tends to feel less intimidating to clients than E1 or E8.

Dalston is the budget call. Studios in and around Dalston Junction run £25–35/hr for spaces that are entirely competent for headshot work. The rough edges of the neighbourhood occasionally throw clients — I've had a few corporate clients arrive looking slightly baffled — but the studios themselves are usually fine.

Hackney Central is a middle ground. Rates of £35–50/hr for studios that are typically better-kitted than Dalston and better-priced than Shoreditch. The only downside is Hackney Central Overground, which is slower than the Victoria Line for clients coming from the City or north London.
