Most photographers talk about studio hire in terms of what the van needs. Loading bay clearance, parking within 100m, turning circle for the long-wheelbase. And yes, for large commercial shoots with significant lighting kit, a vehicle is almost non-negotiable.

But not every shoot day is a large commercial shoot. Portrait days, headshot sessions, editorial work, small product shoots — plenty of professional photography happens with a camera bag, a reflector, and whatever lighting you can carry or hire from the studio. And for all of those, London's public transport network connects you to a reasonable range of studios without needing to navigate parking or a van.

Here's what I've learnt doing shoot days without a vehicle in London.

The honest scope of van-free shoots

Let's be clear about what's realistic first. You can do a lot on public transport. But there are hard limits.

A Pelican case, a tripod bag, and a camera bag on the Overground is fine. Two large Peli cases, three C-stands, and a boom arm is not going to happen on the Tube at 7:30am. The kit determines the method, and if the brief requires significant grip equipment, continuous lighting heads, or large modifiers, you're going to need a vehicle or a hire arrangement with a studio that provides the gear in situ.

Van-free studio days work best for: portrait photography, headshots, editorial work, test shoots, small product shoots, anything using the studio's in-house lighting package. They don't work as well for large commercial briefs that require your own kit, heavy props, or multiple setup changes.

Shoreditch and Dalston — the Overground zone

Shoreditch High Street station (East London Line, Overground) is the most photographer-friendly station in London for studio access. From Liverpool Street, Shoreditch High Street is two minutes. From Highbury and Islington it's ten. The Old Street area around EC1 is one stop north on the Northern Line from Bank.

The studio density around EC1, E1, and the N1/N16 Dalston belt is high. Dalston Junction and Dalston Kingsland stations on the Overground put you within walking range of a concentration of portrait and commercial studios that have been operating in this area for years. Rates in the Dalston area tend to be meaningfully lower than Shoreditch proper, which is worth knowing when you're not claiming a car park as a business expense.

The limitation in this zone: it works well for commuter-style kit transport. It doesn't work as well for anything requiring a vehicle at arrival — if you're bringing a backdrop stand and a large modifier even, you're looking at a taxi for the last section.

Peckham and Bermondsey — trains and Overground

Peckham Rye is served by National Rail (London Bridge in nine minutes, Victoria in about fifteen) and the Overground. Bermondsey is Zone 2 on the Jubilee Line, six minutes from London Bridge.

Both areas have photography studios that have built their reputation largely without the production-budget clients that define Hackney Wick. Peckham studios tend toward portrait, fashion, and content work. Bermondsey has a mix of commercial and creative. Both are accessible on public transport with a sensible kit load.

The area around Peckham Rye specifically is worth knowing for test shoots and editorial work. Rates in SE15 run below what equivalent studios charge in E8 or EC2, and the building stock — converted railway arches, older warehouse units — has the kind of character that works for certain aesthetics.

Hackney Wick — technically on the Overground, practically not

Hackney Wick station exists. It's on the London Overground. But it's a request stop with limited services, the walk to most studios in the E9 belt is ten to fifteen minutes on foot through an industrial area, and the station itself is not designed for anyone carrying meaningful kit.

I'd describe Hackney Wick as semi-accessible by public transport. If you're arriving alone with a camera bag and can walk, it works. If you're a two-person team with any equipment, it gets complicated. Most people who shoot regularly in Hackney Wick arrive by car or van, and the infrastructure reflects that — loading bays, parking, the whole thing designed for vehicles.

If you want the east London commercial studio experience without the vehicle requirement, look at Bethnal Green (Central Line, Zone 2), Stepney Green (District Line), or Whitechapel (Elizabeth Line, District Line, Overground) as better public-transport bases for the same approximate area.

North London — tube-accessible options

North London isn't the first place photographers look for studios, but the Victoria Line and the Overground make several north London areas much more accessible than they feel on a map. Stoke Newington has some portrait studio spaces that aren't widely talked about outside the local photography community. Islington and the N1 belt is Zone 1/2, accessible from the Angel on the Northern Line.

Walthamstow (E17) is worth mentioning again because the Victoria Line to Walthamstow Central is genuinely fast — fifteen minutes from King's Cross. The studio spaces in E17 are accessible without a car, at rates well below Zone 1/2, and the building stock has the industrial character that works for certain briefs. It's not glamorous. But for a test shoot or an editorial day, it performs well.

Central London — Zone 1 studios

The most tube-accessible studios are obviously in Zone 1. And they're expensive. But for a short portrait session — headshots for a client in the City, for instance — a Zone 1 studio that's a five-minute walk from their office can make sense even at the Zone 1 premium. The overhead of travel drops from their day, they arrive relaxed, the session runs cleanly.

The trade-off is floor area. Zone 1 studio spaces are smaller for the same money, and you're rarely getting the cyclorama sizes or ceiling heights available in East or South London. For portrait, interview, and headshot work that works fine. For anything requiring significant floor area, you're probably better off commuting slightly further.

Managing kit on public transport

A few practical notes from experience:

Roller cases are dramatically better than shoulder bags for Tube-kit transport. A cabin-sized roller with a camera body, two or three lenses, and accessories handles Overground and Tube without incident. A shoulder bag with the same contents becomes an issue on escalators and in crowded carriages.

Tripod bags on their own tend to be fine in off-peak travel. During rush hour — 7-9am and 5-7pm — they're awkward. If the brief requires a tripod, travelling outside those windows is noticeably easier.

Courier and messenger services for kit transport exist in London and are underused by photographers. A kit case sent by motorcycle courier from your home or workspace to the studio costs £15–£30 for a medium case, arrives when you ask it to, and saves you the whole transport decision. For studios that have someone to receive deliveries, this genuinely changes the logistics of van-free shooting.

Studios that suit van-free working

The best studios for public-transport arrivals tend to be the ones designed for individual photographers and small teams rather than full production crews. Good in-house lighting packages are important — if you're not bringing your own, the studio's kit determines the brief you can fulfil. A studio with a Profoto B10 and decent modifiers in the hire package covers a lot of portrait and small product work without needing to add kit transport to the logistics.
