Maternity photography has a spec problem. Most photographers booking a room for a bump shoot are filtering for things that don't matter — big cyclorama, high ceiling, lots of lighting options. Those specs come from e-commerce and portrait work. Maternity needs something different, and the gap between "fine studio" and "right studio" for this brief is bigger than you'd think.

I've shot maternity sessions in London studios, Manchester, Sheffield, and a handful of spaces across the south-east. Here's what I've learnt about what the brief actually needs.

Why maternity is a distinct brief

You're photographing someone at 28 to 38 weeks pregnant. They may be uncomfortable, they can't stand for long periods, and they need access to a private changing area and a toilet nearby at all times. The session typically runs 1.5 to 2 hours — not a full production day. And the posing requirements mean floor space for low setups, soft surfaces, and enough room to work at low angles without running out of backdrop.

None of that requires a 10m cyclorama. What it requires: a quiet, private, warm room with a decent floor, space to move, and facilities a heavily pregnant person can use comfortably.

Room temperature

This one gets misunderstood. For newborn photography, studios are often heated to 24–27°C — that's for a baby who can't regulate their own body temperature. For maternity, you're photographing an adult, and a heavily pregnant adult runs warm. A room that's standard office-comfortable — around 20–21°C — is generally fine.

That said, think about who else is in the room. If there's a partner attending, if there are other children, you want the space to be comfortable for everyone. A cold studio where the subject is partially dressed for a sheer-fabric shot is the wrong call. Aim for warm-comfortable rather than hot, and make sure the heating is controllable so you can adjust if needed.

Flooring and posing space

A lot of maternity session posing happens at floor level. Seated poses, semi-reclined poses, kneeling — all of these put the client on the floor. That means the floor surface matters in a way it doesn't for standing portrait work.

Hard polished concrete: functional but uncomfortable for long floor sessions without a mat or rug. You can bring a mat, but you're then working with whatever you brought rather than the studio floor. Timber flooring is better — it's warmer visually and physically. If the studio has rugs available, even better; a decent rug under the subject changes the feel of floor-level shots considerably.

Thin-pile carpet is workable but looks dated on camera unless the rest of the set is styled to match. Avoid very glossy or reflective floors — they create unwanted catch lights at low shooting angles and give the image a commercial product feel that's wrong for this brief.

You also need space for the photographer to work at low angles. A 4m x 5m shooting area works, but 5m x 7m is more comfortable when you're shooting wide with a 35mm at floor level and need to back up.

Lighting: natural light wins

I'd rather shoot a maternity session in a studio with one good north-facing window and no flash gear than in a studio with a full Godox AD600 kit and no natural light. Soft, directional window light flatters bump photography in a way that strobes struggle to replicate. The light falls naturally on the curves of the subject, shadows sit in the right places, and the skin tones hold without a lot of gel correction.

That doesn't mean strobes can't work — they absolutely can. A large softbox (90cm or bigger) positioned high and to one side, with a reflector or v-flat on the other, will create something close to good window light quality. The Aputure 600d through a 120cm modifier is a usable setup. But when you have a choice, I'd take the window.

The key thing to avoid: overhead lighting as a key source. Hard overhead creates unflattering shadows on the bump and on the face simultaneously. Strip that out of the equation entirely — either turn off the studio overheads or position your subject away from them.

Backdrop options

Maternity photography skews toward neutral backgrounds — white, grey, cream, dark teal, warm sand tones. A simple 9ft seamless paper roll covers most requests. But unlike e-commerce work where you need a single immaculate white, maternity clients often want texture in the background: a stone wall, a fabric drape, painted canvas in a warm tone.

Studios that have canvas backdrops available for hire alongside paper are useful. Alternatively, a bare painted wall in a neutral colour is genuinely valuable — a lot of maternity photographers specifically seek out studios with an interesting exposed brick or smooth grey-painted wall as an alternative backdrop option. It adds variety across a session without needing additional kit.

Privacy and the no-through-traffic rule

This is the one that catches studios out. Maternity photography involves a client who is often partially dressed — loose fabric wraps, sheer fabrics, skin-showing poses. A studio where other clients, cleaners, or owners might walk through without warning is not suitable for this brief.

I've asked studios directly: "Can you guarantee that no one else enters this space during our booking, and that there's a lockable door?" The answer separates the studios that understand this brief from the ones that don't. Some multi-studio spaces have shared changing facilities and communal corridors — that's fine, as long as the actual shooting space is private and the changing room is lockable.

Toilet access immediately off the studio, or within a very short walk, is also non-negotiable. You're not asking the client to walk through a building to find facilities.

What the session doesn't need

Cyclorama — probably not needed. Maternity sessions don't require a seamless floor-to-wall transition in most cases. A straight paper or canvas background, or a wall, does the job.

Loading bay, freight lift, three-phase power — none of this is relevant. You're carrying in a kit bag with a camera and possibly a portable strobe. This is a lightweight brief that doesn't need a production-heavy space.

Extensive rigging — also not needed. One stand with a softbox covers the setup for most maternity sessions. High-end lighting infrastructure adds cost without adding value here.

Rates and what to expect

Maternity sessions typically run 1.5–2 hours, which means you're booking either a 2-hour slot or a half-day depending on the studio's minimum hire. In London, a half-day at a small portrait-oriented studio runs roughly £120–£200 depending on location. Outside London — Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Bristol — expect £60–£120 for a half-day in a comparable space.

Some studios specifically market maternity packages with backdrops, props (bowls, fabric drapes, wrap blankets), and a heated room as part of the booking. These tend to run higher — £150–£250 for the session — but they're built for the brief in a way that a general hire studio isn't always. If you're shooting a lot of maternity work, finding one of these specialist spaces in your area and building a relationship with the owner pays off across the year.

Finding the right room in practice

Most general studio directories don't filter for maternity-specific features. The search terms that work: "portrait studio with natural light," "lifestyle studio," or "small studio with changing room." These narrow the field toward the kind of space that suits this brief better than searching for photography studios generally.

Call before you book. Explain the brief specifically — maternity session, 1.5 hours, partially undressed client, need guaranteed private access. You'll quickly hear whether the studio operator understands what you're asking for, and that instinct is often more reliable than a features checklist.
