The brief came in on a Tuesday. NHS trust comms team, twelve staff portraits across three departments, plus B-roll for a patient experience video. The account manager asked me to find a studio that was "clean and clinical." I knew immediately that this was going to be harder than it looked.

Healthcare brand photography — the kind done for hospital groups, pharmaceutical companies, medical device brands and NHS comms teams — has a specific set of studio requirements that most standard hire listings don't come close to addressing. I've now shot eight of these jobs in the past two years. Here's what I've learned.

First: what this post is and isn't about

Clinical photography — documenting patient conditions, surgical procedures, dermatology cases — is done in hospitals by photographers on the register maintained by the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS). That's a different discipline with different governance entirely. This post is about brand and marketing photography for healthcare organisations. Think: NHS trust annual report. Pharma product launch imagery. Medical device company website hero shots. Healthcare tech brand campaigns.

Different rules. But still a brief that demands more from a studio than the usual fashion or product shoot.

The lighting spec matters more than you'd think

Skin tone accuracy is always important. In healthcare shoots it's non-negotiable. If your lighting has a low CRI — anything under 90, really — you'll get colour casts that make healthy skin look jaundiced or washed out, and that's a problem when your subject is supposed to look reassuringly well. I use continuous LED for these jobs rather than strobe, specifically because the client often wants video alongside stills. A mix of stills and testimonial video is now standard on most healthcare brand briefs.

But here's the thing most people overlook: the walls. A studio with warm-toned concrete or exposed brick might look amazing for a fashion editorial. For a healthcare brand shoot it's usually wrong. Clients want clean, neutral backgrounds — not because they're boring, but because the imagery has to work in hospitals, waiting rooms, and clinical communications materials where the visual language is already tightly controlled.

The changing and waiting room situation

On a standard shoot, the changing area is a minor consideration. On a healthcare brand shoot, it's central to whether the day runs well.

Some of your talent will be patients who've agreed to take part in the campaign. Some will be clinical staff. Neither group wants to be crossing paths in a cramped corridor or sharing a curtained-off corner of the main floor. I always ask studios for two separate changing spaces and a waiting area that's properly separated from the shooting floor. Most studios have one small room they call a changing room. That's not enough for this brief.

The client on the NHS job I mentioned at the top? The comms lead arrived to check the studio two hours before call time. She spent fifteen minutes in the changing area, the bathroom, and the client waiting space before she was satisfied. It's that level of scrutiny. Worth finding out before the day, not on it.

Accessibility is not optional

If you're shooting real patients as part of a healthcare campaign — which is increasingly common — you need a studio with proper step-free access, wide doorways, and accessible bathroom facilities. A studio with three flights of stairs and a passenger lift that's "being fixed" won't work. Neither will one where the changing room is down a narrow corridor that won't fit a wheelchair.

It's worth specifically asking: is the entire studio — including changing rooms, shooting floor, and toilets — step-free? Because "accessible building" on a listing can mean the front door is fine but everything else isn't.

The studio floor and surfaces

Healthcare clients notice dirty studios. I've walked into spaces that looked fine in photos but had corner scuffs, dusty background paper, and kit stacked carelessly against every wall. On a standard studio hire day that's fine — it's a working environment. On a healthcare brand shoot the client's clinical governance mindset kicks in and suddenly the studio feels unprofessional rather than just lived-in.

Before booking any studio for this brief, I ask to see photos taken in the last month — not the portfolio shots from 2023. I want to see what the floor actually looks like. A polished concrete floor with a fresh seamless roll is ideal. Carpet is a problem. Worn lino is worse.

Shooting in silence

On the NHS job we did a lot of testimonial video. A ward manager, two nurses, a patient. All of them needed to speak clearly on camera in a quiet environment. The studio we used was next to a railway line. We discovered this at 9am. The patient — who'd already had a long journey to get there — ended up having to redo her section four times when trains went past.

For any healthcare shoot with video content, ask about ambient noise. Road noise, HVAC fans, adjacent businesses. Ask what the walls are made of and whether the windows face a road. These aren't questions most studio listings invite, but the better studios are used to being asked.

The studios I'd look at for this brief

Bigger natural-light studios in converted industrial buildings often work well for the aesthetic — clean, airy, not stuffy. Studios in purpose-built blocks tend to have better acoustic control and more predictable HVAC. For the healthcare brief specifically, I lean towards purpose-built studios where the owner understands commercial clients and has dealt with corporate shoots before. They tend to have proper changing rooms, reliable power, and no surprises.

What to brief the studio owner

Most studio owners are used to photographers arriving and getting on with it. Healthcare brand jobs need a different brief. I send a short paragraph before every booking that covers: type of talent (including whether any are patients), accessibility needs, number of people in the space at peak time, whether audio recording is in scope, and my lighting draw. That last one has saved me twice — once when a studio owner called me back to say I'd need to bring my own distribution board, once when they upgraded me to a room with a 32A circuit at no extra cost because they'd dealt with this before.

The brief is also a signal. Studios that respond well to this kind of detail — quickly, with specific answers, not just "yes, we can accommodate that" — are generally the right studios for this work. The ones that get vague are usually relying on you not to push it.

Day rates and what to budget

Healthcare brand shoots often run long. Twelve staff portraits means twelve separate setups, lighting tweaks between sitters, and inevitably someone who's twenty minutes late because they got called to a ward issue. Budget for a full day rather than a half-day even if you think you can do it in four hours. Budget for an assistant. And budget for a studio that charges a fair rate rather than the cheapest one — because the cost of a reshooting caused by a rubbish changing room or a noisy location is considerably higher than the £100 you saved on the day rate.

Across the UK, dedicated commercial studios appropriate for healthcare briefs typically run £80 to £200 per hour depending on size and location, with London studios at the top of that range and regional cities at the lower end. Full-day rates — usually defined as eight to ten hours — generally sit between £500 and £1,200 depending on spec.

One thing nobody warns you about

The patient privacy question. I've had clients ask — mid-booking — whether the studio has security cameras on the shooting floor. And whether footage is retained. This is a legitimate question if a patient is being photographed as part of a brand campaign, because their involvement may be sensitive and they need assurance about who can see the footage.

Most studio owners haven't been asked this before. But it's worth raising early, because a studio that can confirm their CCTV policy (or confirm they have no cameras on the shooting floor) is one less thing to deal with on the day.

The healthcare brief is demanding. But it's also one of the most rewarding briefs I do — because the stakes are real, the clients care about quality, and when it goes right the imagery actually does something that matters. Finding the right studio is most of the work.
