Most photographers think about studio hire as a single-day transaction. Book a studio for a day, pay the day rate, done. And for one-day jobs, that's all there is to it.

But a lot of commercial work isn't one day. A product campaign across multiple SKUs. A fashion brand's seasonal lookbook. An e-commerce refresh across a whole product catalogue. Those jobs run two, three, five days. Sometimes a week. And studios price extended bookings differently — often very differently — from how they price single days.

I've negotiated enough multi-day blocks to have a reasonable sense of what's achievable and what isn't. Here's what I know about how UK studios price extended bookings in 2026, and what to say when you want a deal that makes sense for both sides.

How studios typically structure multi-day rates

The most common pattern is a sliding scale: book two days and get a small discount off the single-day rate. Book three or more and the discount gets meaningful. Book five or more — a full week — and you're in a different conversation entirely.

Typical discounts at London mid-range commercial studios in 2026:

Single day: full rate (let's say £600)
Two days: 5–10% discount (£540–570/day)
Three days: 10–15% discount (£510–540/day)
Five days / full week: 15–25% discount (£450–510/day)

Those percentages aren't made up — they reflect what I've actually negotiated at studios in East London, West London, and one in Manchester. The exact figures vary by studio size, how booked they are, and the time of year.

The catch: most studios don't advertise multi-day rates. They quote the single-day rate, wait for you to ask, and the conversation goes from there. This means photographers who don't ask get the day rate every time. The ones who ask often get meaningfully better terms.

What makes a studio say yes to a discount

Studios are businesses with fixed overheads — rent, rates, staffing, utilities. A studio that fills five consecutive days generates predictable cash flow at near-zero additional cost compared to five separate single-day bookings that involve client changeover, cleaning, and marketing to fill each slot. The admin load alone is materially lower for a block booking.

That's your leverage — but it's not leverage you need to explain. What you need to offer is: confirmed dates, a signed booking, and payment terms that work for the studio. Show them a real commitment and a multi-day rate becomes something they'll want to make happen.

Studios say no to multi-day discounts when: the week you want is already partially filled with other bookings they'd have to turn away. Or when they know their calendar around that period is tight and single-day bookings at full rate are more valuable than your block at a discount.

So timing matters. A multi-day block in January or February — when UK studios are quieter after the Christmas period — lands better than the same ask in September or October when commercial production is running hard and studios can fill single days easily.

Consecutive days vs split booking

Here's a distinction that matters: a studio will discount five consecutive days far more readily than five days spread across three weeks. Consecutive days allow them to set up and leave a set — the seamless, the lighting positions, the grip positions. Split across weeks, they need to rebuild between each of your days and may have other clients using the space in between, which means you're tearing down and rebuilding each time too.

For productions that can schedule consecutive shooting days, there's a meaningful operational and financial benefit to running them in a block. You arrive on day one and spend an hour setting up; days two through five you walk in and shoot. That time saving alone — multiply an hour of assistant time across four extra days — often justifies the block booking even before the rate discount.

Some studios will even store your set between consecutive days if you're paying for a block. The seamless stays up. The grip positions are marked. The lighting schematic is photographed and the positions are left taped. On complex product campaigns where you're shooting the same setup across a large number of SKUs, this is a significant operational improvement.

What to say when you call

Don't email an enquiry for a multi-day block. Call. Email is where the standard rate card lives. Phone is where the real conversation happens.

The script I use, roughly: 'I'm looking at booking [X] consecutive days in [month range]. I've done two bookings here before and I'd like to make this a regular thing. What does a block of [X] days look like on pricing?'

Two things in that sentence that aren't accidental: mention of being a returning client if you are one, and the phrase 'a regular thing'. Studios that see you as an ongoing relationship rather than a one-time booking will sharpen their pricing. Not dramatically, but measurably.

If it's your first booking at a studio, that relationship card isn't in your hand yet. In that case, confirm the specific dates, be clear about the scale of the production, and offer to pay a deposit immediately to confirm the block. Cash in hand — or rather, bank transfer on the way — is a persuasive argument.

What to get in writing

Whatever you negotiate verbally, confirm in writing before you rely on it. Specifically:

The agreed rate per day on the block booking
What the rate includes (which adjacent spaces, what kit is included)
Whether you can leave a set up between days
What happens if you need to cancel one day within the block — is it charged at full rate or the block rate?
Pre-light access terms and how it's charged
Payment schedule

The cancellation question is the one that bites people. A studio that's discounted a five-day block might have terms where cancelling one day within the block loses you the discount on the remaining days. Or they might charge the cancelled day at the single-day rate. Either is contractually legitimate — but it's the sort of thing you want to know before you sign, not when you call to cancel day three because the art director got flu.

Studios outside London for multi-day bookings

The rate advantage of shooting outside London gets more pronounced on multi-day blocks. A five-day shoot at a mid-range Hackney studio at £600/day with a 20% block discount lands at £2,400 for the week. A comparable five-day block at a well-equipped Manchester studio in Ancoats or the Northern Quarter might come in at £1,750–2,000 — with parking included and a much easier loading situation.

On top: hotel costs for a crew based in London shooting in Manchester across five days might add £500–800 to the production. The studio saving often offsets the travel. The calculation depends on crew size and hotel choices but it's worth running the numbers for any multi-day campaign where geography isn't fixed by the client.

Same logic applies to Birmingham, Bristol, and Leeds. All three cities have commercial studios that have improved markedly over the last few years and now compete seriously on spec — but still come in at a meaningful day-rate discount versus London equivalents.

Weekly hire: a different category

A full-week booking (five days) at a studio is sometimes categorised as a 'weekly hire' rather than a block booking — and this can come with different terms. Some studios offer a flat weekly rate that's easier to cost than a per-day calculation. A studio that charges £600/day for single bookings might offer a flat £2,500/week rate for a full-week exclusive use.

Exclusive use is the key term here. On a weekly hire, you're not just booking shooting days — you're locking the studio so no other client uses the space during your week. Your set stays up. Your kit stays in the building. The studio doesn't clean between your days. And you can often negotiate after-hours access as part of the weekly rate.

For productions where the set itself is a significant investment — elaborate product sets, dressing that took two days to build, cyclorama finishes that need time to cure — the weekly exclusive is the format that makes sense. Rebuilding a complex set each day because another client is in the studio between your bookings erases any rate saving immediately.

The studio perspective

I mentioned earlier that I've been on both sides of this conversation. The studio owner's reality is that empty days cost them money in a very direct way — they can't recover unsold studio time the way a hotel sells empty rooms at a discount to fill them. A committed block booking, even at a discount, is preferable to uncertain day-by-day filling of the calendar.

That asymmetry is what makes multi-day negotiation possible. You're not asking for a favour — you're offering something the studio actually wants: a filled calendar week, confirmed in advance, with a single client who knows how to run a production and won't phone at 8am to ask where the kettle is.
