Four sets in one day sounded manageable on the production schedule. A hero product moment, a lifestyle vignette, a clean-white e-commerce background, and a simple talking-to-camera setup for social. Eight hours of studio time. How hard could it be?

The answer was: a lot harder than the spreadsheet suggested. Two sets broke down before they were needed, one had to be struck and re-built in the same floor space as the third, and by 4pm the creative director was standing in a studio covered in flat-pack props and gaffer tape looking at me with an expression I still think about.

The problem wasn't the plan. The problem was the room. We'd booked a 200 sqm studio that could technically host four sets — but not simultaneously, and not with a twenty-person crew moving between them. This is the brief that multi-set brand campaign studio hire is really about.

The space mathematics

Most studio guides talk about floor area in terms of a single setup. A cyc, a backdrop, a tabletop. But multi-set days need a completely different calculation.

A standing hero-product set with a 3m wide seamless and a Godox AD600 Pro key plus reflector fill needs roughly 20–25 sqm of shooting space. Add the safe zone behind the camera operator and you're looking at 35–40 sqm per active shooting setup, minimum. A lifestyle vignette with even minimal set-dressing takes 40–50 sqm. A talking-to-camera setup for social content — background, subject, key light, kicker, teleprompter — needs another 30–35 sqm.

Four sets simultaneously at those minimum footprints means 130–165 sqm of dedicated shooting floor, before you account for:

Set storage and pre-build area for waiting setups
Lighting kit staging — C-stands, flag arms, sandbags — which spreads fast
Crew circulation space between sets
Hair, makeup and styling area
Client and agency area

Add those up realistically and you need 300–350 sqm for a genuine four-set campaign day. Most studios that advertise as "large" or "suitable for commercial production" come in at 150–200 sqm of shooting floor. That's fine for two sets. Not for four.

What the studio needs to provide

Multi-set production days live or die on infrastructure. The shooting spaces matter, but so does everything around them. What I now insist on before I book:

Multiple independent power runs. If your talking-to-camera setup runs continuous Aputure LS 600d Pros at around 720W each, and your hero-product set runs strobes and styling lights, and your lifestyle set has practical set-dressing lights — those need independent circuits. One shared ring main tripping mid-setup is a production emergency. Studios with 32A feeds to multiple zones of the shooting floor are the ones that handle commercial production without drama.

Separate client and crew holding areas. A twenty-person shoot with agency, brand team, models, photographer, assistants, stylist, hair, makeup and a runner can't all be in the same 200 sqm space without friction. The agency creatives need to be somewhere comfortable with Wi-Fi where they can review tethered selects without standing in the middle of the lighting setup. Studios that have a separate client lounge — even a side room with a screen and some chairs — are meaningfully better for commercial work.

Loading access that matches the kit list. Four sets means four different prop configurations, four backdrop systems, multiple lighting setups, camera cases and grip equipment. That kit needs to move in efficiently in the morning and out efficiently in the evening. A studio with a street-level loading door and a lift wide enough for a tall lighting stand is a different proposition from one where you're carrying everything up two flights of stairs through a shared stairwell.

Scheduling the day: the part most production plans get wrong

The schedule that works for a single-set shoot doesn't work for four sets. On a single-set day, you move linearly: setup, shoot, wrap, move to next look. On a multi-set day, you're running setups in parallel.

The structure I use now:

30–45 minutes of pre-light time before the crew and talent arrive — at minimum
Build sets 2 and 3 during shooting on set 1, not after. This requires enough floor space and enough assistants.
Strike a set only when the next one is fully built and lit. Not when it's "nearly ready."
Plan hard turnovers — fifteen minutes maximum between wrapping on one set and first shot on the next.

The reason most multi-set days run over isn't the shooting. It's the transitions. And transitions run over because the set that should be ready isn't, because it was being built in a corner of the same floor while the current setup was still being shot.

Studios in London worth looking at for this brief

The east London belt — Hackney Wick, Park Royal, Tottenham — has several studios with 300 sqm+ of shooting floor. Not all of them are set up for commercial multi-set production, but the ones that are tend to have proper loading access, separated client and crew facilities, and power infrastructure that can handle simultaneous setups. Expect full-day rates in the £1,000–£1,500 range for the rooms that genuinely fit this brief in London.

Ancoats in Manchester is worth a serious look if your brief allows for a northern shoot. A comparable room in Ancoats typically runs 30–40% cheaper than the equivalent London space, with comparable infrastructure. Parking is easier, load-in is simpler, and the studios there have been building commercial production experience over the past four years. I've run two campaign days out of Manchester in the past year and the production experience was better — not worse — than comparable London bookings.

The pre-light day question

On a multi-set campaign day, a pre-light day is not a luxury. It's a production decision. Four sets built, lit and camera-tested the evening before means your shoot day starts with a first shot, not with forty-five minutes of lighting adjustments. The maths: a pre-light half-day in London typically costs £150–£250. That buys you back two hours of usable shoot time on a day where an eight-hour booking at £1,200 is your cost base. The arithmetic is clear.

The studios that understand commercial production will often allow a pre-light window — arriving the evening before or early morning before your booked time slot — as part of the booking. Ask about it explicitly. Don't assume it's included, but do ask.
