Music videos have a set of studio requirements that's distinct from almost every other brief I shoot. You'd think the similarities to commercial stills work would carry over — and some do. But get the power spec wrong or underestimate the floor depth, and you're spending the last two hours of a nine-hour day managing problems you should've spotted at the viewing.

I've shot music video work across the UK — Hackney Wick to Salford Quays, south London to the industrial belt around Park Royal. The same checklist trips people up every single time. This is that checklist.

Floor area: the number that actually limits your shoot

A 6m × 8m studio sounds usable. On paper, 48sqm gives you room. In practice, once you've got a six-person dance call, a 6m slider, a second camera position, and a lighting rig with three stands and a softbox frame, you've got 48sqm of chaos.

My floor minimum for any production involving movement — even two or three artists — is 80sqm. If there's set build, I want 120sqm. The reason I keep going back to the east London industrial belt (E10, E16, parts of E3) is raw floor area. I've seen 250sqm studios near Silvertown and Fish Island going for £650/day that would've been £950 in Shoreditch for 180sqm.

The cyclorama question comes up on almost every music video brief. A cyc gives you a clean background without backdrop rolls and lets you push wide without running out of white. Width matters here — for more than two artists, 9m minimum. Anything narrower and you're showing the edge on a 24mm lens.

Some directors don't want a cyc. They want an empty warehouse floor, a textured brick wall, a specific floor treatment. Fine — but those studios often lack the power infrastructure, so you trade one problem for another. Worth having the conversation early.

Ceiling height and rigging

This is where music video differs most sharply from portrait or product work. A headshot studio manages at 3m. A music video studio cannot.

You need room for overhead rigging — at minimum a simple pipe rig or pre-rigged bars for hanging Arri SkyPanel S60-Cs, practicals, or a china-ball frame. That means 4m+ of clear ceiling height, with rigging hardware rated to at least 150kg working load per point. And that's before a gaffer wants to add a fresnel or an HMI to the rig.

Some studios advertise 3.5m ceilings as "suitable for film production." Technically, yes. But 3.5m isn't rigging height — it's floor-to-ceiling clearance. By the time you've got a lighting bar at 3.2m, you're placing S60-Cs with roughly 70cm of working space above. Nobody's flying anything useful at that height.

Ask the studio for the usable rigging height: the distance from the floor to the lowest fixed rig point. And ask what the working load per point is. If they don't know, the rig wasn't designed for production use.

I've used two east London studios with 5.5m ceilings and pre-rigged bar systems — one in Hackney Wick, one near Fish Island — both of which let us fly Arri S60-Cs overhead without a cherry-picker. Both charged around £850 for a ten-hour day, about £85/hr. Not cheap. But you're saving the cost of a dedicated rigging crew and lifting kit for the day.

Power: where afternoon shoots fall apart

A standard 13A ring main is fine for continuous LED panels and battery-powered strobes. It is not fine for a gaffer who wants to run two 1.2kW HMI fixtures, a tungsten practical rig, and a video village alongside a hair and makeup setup with two heated tools and a steamer. That's 4–6kW of simultaneous draw — and a standard UK ring circuit is rated to 3kW before you're relying on the fuse board to save you.

What you need for a proper music video production is a minimum 32A single-phase supply dedicated to lighting. Better: 63A three-phase — roughly 43kW of capacity split across three phases. Enough for an Arri 2.5kW HMI, a bank of Aputure LS600d Pros, and the rest of your technical infrastructure without touching the domestic circuits.

Ask specifically: how many 32A single-phase outlets, and how many 63A three-phase CEE outlets? Some studios claim "production power" and mean one 32A socket on an otherwise domestic ring. Fine for small LED rigs. Not fine if your gaffer is planning anything ambitious.

The best London studios I've used for music video work — three in east London, one in Park Royal — all have 100A three-phase supplies with at least four 63A CEE outlets distributed across the floor. London rates for that spec: £700–950 per ten-hour day for 200sqm+. Manchester equivalents in Ancoats and the MediaCityUK belt: £500–700 for comparable floor area and power.

Blackout: not negotiable for dark-background work

Music videos shot against a lit set don't always need blackout. But anything with a dark gradient, contrast lighting, or a neon-and-practical look absolutely does.

Daylight creep is the enemy. A studio with north-facing rooflights and no blackout blinds is unusable for moody work after 9am in summer. Ask whether the studio has full blackout — every window and rooflight with a rated blackout blind, not just curtains — and test it: lights off for one full minute during the viewing.

I got caught by a studio in SE1 that had what they called "95% blackout." That 5% of daylight hits the back wall and kills your gradient. A studio is either blacked out or it isn't.

Loading and access

Music video kits are heavier and wider than most photo kits. A three-truck lighting package with camera van means loading doors of at least 2.5m wide by 2.5m high. Drive-in beats drive-up — if you can reverse a van to within five metres of the loading door, your truck-to-floor time roughly halves.

Parking. If the studio doesn't have reserved production parking for at least two vehicles, build a parking plan before the day. East London streets mean a camera van driver circling for twenty minutes during load-in — slow start to a tight schedule.

Artist facilities: green rooms and makeup

You're working with artists. Artists have managers, stylists, makeup artists, and label representatives who all need somewhere that isn't the studio floor.

A proper music video studio has at least one green room — a separate room with mirrors, good overhead lighting at around 5000K, enough sockets for two makeup positions' worth of heated tools, and a table that actually fits two people working. Some east London spaces run three-room setups. Worth £100–150/day extra if the alternative is a stylist working from a mirror propped against a spare wall. I've been on those days. They go badly.

Internet and playback

Sounds minor until a director's trying to transmit 4K proxy files to a label's A&R via a 10Mbps shared consumer router. Most studios don't publish their internet spec. Ask directly: what's the hardwired speed? Is there a separate production network, or is it shared with offices?

The best London spaces offer 1Gbps symmetrical with a dedicated studio SSID and a Cat6 drop available at the video village position. Ask during the viewing. If they look confused, factor that into your DIT setup plan.

The LED wall question

More music video briefs are now asking about LED volume stages or in-camera virtual production elements. Most independent studios don't have permanent LED walls — but some offer them as an add-on or have supplier relationships for temporary installs.

LED walls need floor space — typically 3–5m minimum between camera and wall for a usable throw distance — plus significant power. A 5m × 3m P2.6 LED wall pulls around 15–20kW at peak brightness. If the brief mentions extended reality or virtual production, confirm power capacity before anything else. Most studios with 100A three-phase can support this. Most studios without it cannot.

Rate benchmarks for music video studios in 2026

East London (Hackney Wick, Silvertown, Fish Island belt): £700–950 per ten-hour day for 200–300sqm with three-phase power and 4m+ rigging clearance.

Manchester (Ancoats, Salford Quays, MediaCityUK area): £500–700/day for comparable spec. Floor space is usually better value — you'll get 250sqm in Manchester for what gets you 180sqm in Hackney Wick.

Park Royal, west London: £650–850/day. Road access is better than east London. Arterial routes off the A40 mean camera trucks aren't fighting through Bethnal Green at 7am.

Birmingham, Digbeth: £400–650/day. Fewer dedicated music-video-spec studios with proper rigging, but the spaces that have the ceiling height and power are meaningfully cheaper than London or Manchester.

Anything below £400/day for a full spec in a major UK city means something isn't there. Either the power's on a domestic ring, the rigging isn't load-rated, or the floor is smaller than advertised.

The viewing checklist I actually run

Before committing a deposit on any music video date, five things in order:

Walk the full floor with the floor plan open. Measure ceiling height at three points — actual clearance varies more than listings ever say.

Ask to be shown all dedicated production power outlets. 32A and 63A specifically. Turn them off and back on in front of you — this tells you if they're on a shared ring with the kitchen, which three of the five studios I've viewed in the last year were.

Blackout test. Full lights off. One minute. Walk to the back wall.

Run a speed test on your phone from the studio floor — not from reception, from where your video village is going to sit.

Check the loading door with a tape. If there's a camera van in your kit plan, this is not optional.

That's it. I've run this list dozens of times and still been caught out once. But it's a much better afternoon than discovering at 8am that "production power" means one 32A socket and an optimistic listing description.
