I don't shoot newborns. I've been very clear about this to every photographer who's ever asked, because newborn work is a specialism that requires training, certification, and a patience level that frankly I don't have at 7am on a cold Tuesday. But I've helped spec studio hire for three specialist newborn photographers over the past two years, and the brief is genuinely different from almost any other photography studio requirement I've encountered.

The studio requirements for newborn photography are more specific than most platforms acknowledge, and the things that matter aren't the things most listings lead with. Here's what I found out the hard way across three spec projects.

Temperature: the non-negotiable

Newborn babies cannot regulate their own body temperature. This is a physiological fact, not a preference. For newborn photography — the posed, curled-up style you see with babies in wraps and on beanbags — studios need to be kept at 26–28°C throughout the session. Not the room temperature when the studio opens at 9am, but the maintained temperature for the duration of the session, typically two to three hours.

This immediately eliminates a significant proportion of standard photography studios. A studio that heats to a normal working temperature of 19–21°C is unusable for newborn work without a supplementary space heater running throughout. And a supplementary space heater running throughout a studio with a 13A ring main often means a tripped circuit before the second setup.

What to look for: a studio with underfloor heating, or a dedicated heating system capable of maintaining 26–28°C without relying on a portable heater as the primary source. Ask specifically about the heating system and whether the temperature can be controlled by session. Some studios will pre-heat for a newborn booking, but only if they know it's coming.

The secondary heating need: a focused warm source near the baby's position, typically a space heater aimed at the beanbag or posing surface. This needs to be the photographer's own kit — studios don't supply these — and it needs a dedicated 13A socket at floor level close to the working area.

Flooring and beanbag setup

Newborn photographers work low. Almost all the actual shooting happens from a kneeling or prone position, looking across or slightly down at a beanbag on the floor. The floor itself matters in ways it doesn't for most other briefs.

Hard floors (polished concrete, timber, vinyl) are the default in most commercial photography studios. They're fine for newborn work as a surface beneath the beanbag, but they get cold in winter and offer no cushioning for a photographer spending three hours at floor level. Some photographers bring their own foam underlayer. Worth asking whether the studio allows this.

Carpeted studios are rare in commercial photography spaces — most studios have removed carpets precisely because they're impossible to clean after spillages. But a studio with a rug or foam area creates a much better working surface for newborn sessions. A few family photography specialists I know have started specifically looking for studios with soft-surface areas or flexible flooring options for exactly this reason.

Height of fixtures matters. A standard seamless backdrop stand at full extension (2.8–3.5m) is irrelevant for newborn work — you're shooting flat or at low angles, not at standing-portrait height. But you need somewhere to clip or hang the backdrop fabric at around 1.2–1.5m height. Some studios only have high wall mounts designed for standing shots. Worth checking that a backdrop can be positioned low enough for floor-level work.

Lighting for newborn photography

Soft, low-intensity light. That's the consistent preference among every newborn photographer I've worked with. Direct strobe — even through a large modifier — is rarely used for newborn posed work. The reasons are practical: strobe flash disturbs a sleeping baby. A gentle wake at the wrong moment can add an hour to a session, which isn't fair to the parents and makes the photographer's day significantly harder.

Natural daylight from a large north-facing window is the gold standard for newborn photography. Consistent, soft, directionless. If the studio has it, the photographer's other lighting needs are minimal — perhaps a reflector or a white V-flat to fill shadow from the far side. Daylight studios in the right orientation can essentially run a full newborn session on window light alone.

Where daylight isn't available or consistent, continuous LED panels at low intensity — a Godox SL-200 at 20% power through a 90cm octabox, or an Aputure 120d through a large softbox — give the soft, stable source you need without the flash disruption. The key is that the light doesn't change during the session and doesn't require any flash sync that might disturb the baby.

Avoid studios with exclusively hard-source or strobe-only kit included. You either need to bring your own continuous source or confirm the studio has a continuous LED available. Studios that only include ring lights and speedlights in their standard kit package are usually not set up for the kind of low-stimulus environment newborn work requires.

Sound and environment

A newborn photography session typically involves a baby who is persuaded to sleep, then repositioned, then persuaded to sleep again. Loud noises — slamming doors, machinery through the walls, a studio music playlist — break this cycle and extend sessions significantly.

Quiet matters in a way it doesn't for most other studio briefs. Look for studios that are separated from active industrial or commercial tenants, and check whether there are shared spaces or corridors close to the studio door. An hour into a session where the baby is finally settled and someone slams the adjacent studio door is a genuine problem.

White noise. Most newborn photographers bring a white noise machine to sessions. This helps more than most studio specs accommodate — a studio that allows external speakers or has a sound system usable for white noise playback is worth noting.

Family photography: the group-size consideration

Family photography alongside newborn work has a different floor-area requirement. Once you add parents, siblings, and possibly extended family, a 40sqm studio is crowded and a 60sqm studio is workable. Family sessions that include any full-length group shots need 80sqm or more for comfortable working distance.

The backgrounds for family work are also typically different — not just a plain seamless, but styled setups with props, a small set element, or a lifestyle aesthetic that requires floor space and setup time. Studios that allow photographers to set up props and leave them in place for the session duration (rather than requiring breakdown between groups) are significantly easier for family work.

Rates and booking

Newborn photographers typically book studios at off-peak times — midweek mornings, when rates are lower and the studio is less likely to be heavily booked. Most specialist newborn photographers are running their own solo or small practice, not a large commercial team, so budget matters more than for a corporate production.

A half-day booking (9am–1pm) for a portrait or small-studio space with good window light: £80–160 in regional cities (Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham), £120–250 in London. The low-end options in cities like Sheffield and Nottingham run as low as £60–90 for a half-day in a space that has adequate light and a heating system that can reach the required temperature.

Worth paying more for: underfloor heating, a dedicated soft-surface area, genuine north-facing daylight, and a studio that has hosted newborn work before (they understand the requirements and don't book adjacent sessions that create noise during your time). Worth checking explicitly: whether the studio allows you to set the temperature above 24°C. Some studios resist this — understandably, given it's uncomfortable for adult working conditions — and it's better to know before the booking.

UK cities with the best options for newborn and family studios

London: Several portrait studios in Shoreditch, Hackney, and south London have specifically kitted out for newborn and family work, with daylight setups, prop storage, and the right flooring. Rates start around £120 for a half-day.

Manchester: The Ancoats and Northern Quarter area has a cluster of natural-light portrait studios that work well for family and newborn photography. Half-day rates from around £90.

Bristol: The creative studio scene in BS2 and BS3 includes several spaces with generous natural light and lower noise levels than London equivalents. Half-day rates from around £80.

Birmingham: Digbeth and the Jewellery Quarter have a growing number of portrait spaces. Rates are among the best value in any major UK city — half-day from around £70.
