Pet photography in a hired studio is one of those briefs that exposes bad advance planning faster than almost anything else. I know this from experience. I've spent a morning with a Labrador whose nails were skidding on a polished concrete floor, a studio owner who hadn't been told there would be a dog, and a client who watched the whole thing with the particular expression of someone calculating whether they'd made a mistake.

They hadn't, as it turned out. We got the shots. But it was harder than it needed to be, and it was harder because I hadn't asked the right questions before I booked.

Here's what I ask now.

Floor surface is the first question

Polished concrete is everywhere in studio spaces, particularly in the converted industrial buildings that dominate the East London production belt. It looks great in the background of shoot stills. It's terrible for dogs.

A dog on polished concrete is either anxious and slipping, or anxious and refusing to move, or anxious and doing something you then have to clean up. None of these are useful states for a photography subject. Small dogs and elderly dogs have it worst — they lack the leg strength and confidence to handle an unpredictable surface.

What you want instead is a matte, slightly textured surface. Matte vinyl flooring is good. Rubber matting — the kind you'd find in a gym or a shooting range — is excellent and something you can bring yourself. Non-slip vinyl is the best built-in option; if a studio has it, that's immediately useful information.

Some studios have wood floors, which are significantly better than polished concrete for animals but still worth checking. Old waxed wood can be slippery. New hardwood tends to have enough texture to grip. Ask specifically: what's the floor surface in the main space, and is it matte or polished?

If the answer is polished concrete and you can't bring your own matting, book a different space.

Temperature: the spec that gets no airtime

Most studio hire guides don't mention temperature because most of the time it doesn't matter much. Photographers get cold in January and hot in August, but it rarely affects the brief.

For pet sessions it matters considerably more. Dogs, cats, small animals — they're more temperature-sensitive than adult human subjects, and they communicate discomfort by stopping cooperating. A studio that's genuinely cold in winter (old industrial buildings are often poorly insulated, and the high ceilings don't help) will have you working with a shivering or physically shut-down subject.

And dogs pant. On a warm day in a studio without good ventilation, a working dog panting through a two-hour session is going to make the ambient temperature uncomfortable for everyone in the room.

Ask about heating and ventilation before you book. Specifically: is the main studio space climate-controlled, or heated by a single wall heater that makes the corner nearest it too hot and everything else too cold? And is there ventilation — windows that open, or an extraction system — that lets you manage the temperature on a warm day?

The best studios for pet work tend to be spaces where the owner has shot animals themselves, or where clients have flagged this before. They'll know exactly what you're asking. The ones where temperature isn't mentioned in the listing and nobody seems to have thought about it are worth more careful investigation.

Space for handlers and the choreography question

Most pet portrait sessions involve a handler. Sometimes it's the owner — which is usually fine for cats and dogs who know them — and sometimes it's a professional animal handler for commercial work involving less domesticated subjects or trained performance animals.

Either way, you need room for the handler to be close enough to manage the animal and far enough out of frame to disappear when the shot happens. That's a choreography question that depends on the physical layout of the studio.

For a dog portrait on a seamless background, I want the handler crouched at the edge of the paper drop, just outside the frame, with a treat. That works fine in a studio where the backdrop is flush against one wall and I have clear working distance forward. It's awkward in a small studio where the backdrop stand is in the middle of the room with very little floor on either side.

And for cats — who are their own category of subject entirely — you need somewhere for the owner to stay completely out of the cat's eyeline during the shot, or the cat will stare at them rather than anywhere useful. Having a proper background area with clear separation from the waiting/prep zone helps. So does a studio where the main door is at a remove from the shooting area, so the cat isn't tracking every sound from the corridor.

What you don't want in the space

Studios with a lot of unsecured loose equipment at floor level. Dogs investigate things, particularly anything with an interesting smell. A studio where a 15kg bag of stands and accessories is sitting unsecured at the edge of the shooting area is a studio where you're going to spend time redirecting your subject.

Studios with other animals on the premises. Some studio spaces share a building with other tenants, and if one of those tenants has a dog, your cat subject is going to know about it immediately and spend the session trying to find the source of the smell.

Studios where the owner is visibly uncomfortable with the situation. This sounds obvious, but it matters. If you've booked a studio where the hire policy says no animals and you've asked for an exception, you're going to feel that friction during the session. Better to book somewhere that explicitly accepts animal bookings.

Check the cancellation and damage policy

This is the part most photographers skip and then regret. Animals are unpredictable. Sessions get extended because the subject won't settle. And occasionally — not often, but occasionally — something gets damaged or there's a cleaning requirement.

Before booking a studio for pet work, understand the damage deposit situation (most studios take one, but the amounts vary significantly), the cleaning provisions if there's an accident, and whether there's flexibility on session length if you need an extra thirty minutes to finish the shoot.

Studios that explicitly cater to pet photography have thought through all of this. They have easy-clean floor surfaces, a clear damage policy, and they understand that working with animals means the timeline sometimes shifts. Studios that haven't done pet work before may technically allow animals but not have practical provision for what that means in practice.

What rates look like for pet studio work

There's no specific premium for pet-friendly studios — you're paying for the same space at the same rates as any other booking. But expect to run slightly longer sessions than an equivalent human portrait brief: animals take time to settle, you can't direct them the way you'd direct a person, and getting the specific expression or pose that makes the image work often involves a lot of patient waiting between moments.

I book a minimum of three hours for a dog portrait session in a studio. Two hours if the animal is very well-trained or I've worked with them before. For cat sessions — and I say this with respect for cats as subjects — I book four hours minimum and expect to get an hour of usable shooting time out of it. That's not a reflection on cats. It's just honest.

For commercial animal photography — product shoots involving animals, advertising work, lifestyle briefs — the time requirements scale further. A trained animal with a professional handler is more efficient, but the logistics of the shoot are more complex and the day rate reflects that.

Finding the right space

When searching for a studio for pet work, explicitly filter or ask for animal-friendly spaces. Some studios list this as a feature; many don't mention it either way. A direct message asking 'do you accept animal bookings and have any experience of pet photography sessions' will tell you quickly which spaces are set up for it and which ones haven't thought about it.

Browse studio listings on creativestudiohire.com and check the notes on each space. If a studio has hosted pet sessions before, they'll often say so — either in the listing or when you enquire. And if you've found a space that works well for animal photography, it's worth submitting it for listing so other photographers with the same brief can find it.
