The Scottish studio conversation tends to stop at Glasgow and Edinburgh. Which makes sense — both cities have decent hire infrastructure, good transport links, and enough of a photography and video production economy to support it. But there are two other Scottish cities with their own distinct character, and Aberdeen and Dundee get almost no attention in the wider UK photography circuit.

I've been shooting in Scotland long enough to have used spaces in both. They're different cities with different economies, different client bases, and different studios. Neither is a substitute for Glasgow's Finnieston or Edinburgh's Leith — but if you're working in the north or east of Scotland, they're the market you're working in, not a second-best version of somewhere else.

Aberdeen: oil money and a smaller-than-it-looks creative sector

Aberdeen is one of the wealthier cities in Scotland per capita, and has been for decades because of the North Sea oil industry. That shapes the photography market in ways that aren't immediately obvious. There's a strong demand for corporate headshots and industrial/technical photography — for oil and gas companies, engineering firms, offshore businesses — and comparatively less of the commercial fashion and editorial market you'd find in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

The city's creative sector is smaller than its size might suggest, partly because the oil economy has historically sucked up talent and wages in other directions. But the studio infrastructure that does exist is solid and functional.

What's bookable in Aberdeen

There's at least one 1,500 square foot professional studio space in Aberdeen available on Giggster, with equipment, changing rooms and parking included — from around £80 for photoshoots. That's a meaningful floor area for a Scottish city studio, and the rate is competitive against comparable spaces in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The Giggster listing market in Aberdeen is thinner than the central belt cities, so don't expect a shortlist of options. This is a contact-and-enquire market more than a browse-and-book-online market. The spaces that exist are genuinely used, just not heavily marketed.

Corporate and industrial photography from Aberdeen

If your work intersects with the oil and gas sector — corporate events, executive headshots, technical documentation, offshore platform media work — Aberdeen is a genuine production base. The demand exists, the clients are there, and hiring a studio for a multi-day headshot day in Aberdeen makes complete commercial sense for anyone building a regional client base in the north-east of Scotland.

For large industrial shoots (harbour locations, offshore supply vessels, that kind of thing), the studio need is usually for editing, portraiture and anything that needs controlled light — the outdoor industrial stuff is shot on location. A 1,500 sqft studio near the harbour is more useful than a 150 sqft portrait room for a brief like this.

Dundee: the creative city that's growing faster than its studio infrastructure

Dundee has had a serious creative identity for years — V&A Dundee opened in 2018 and gave the city a focal point that's been drawing design and arts activity ever since. The gaming industry (notably Rockstar North's roots and DCA) has shaped the digital creative culture. And the university ecosystem — Dundee, Abertay, the School of Art and Design — means there's a constant flow of visual arts students and emerging photographers.

The gap: studio hire infrastructure hasn't fully caught up with the creative economy. Yet.

What's bookable in Dundee

Dundee is more of a direct-enquiry market than a platform one. There are photographer-run studios that hire out to other photographers, and creative spaces associated with arts organisations that have room-hire options. The DCA (Dundee Contemporary Arts) is worth a direct enquiry — they have studio and workspace infrastructure that isn't always formally listed on hire platforms but can be accessed with a phone call.

For commercial production, Dundee is often used as a location rather than a studio base — the waterfront, the V&A architecture, the Tay bridges. If your brief has any architectural or lifestyle element with a distinctive backdrop, Dundee is a strong choice. If you need a white cyc and 3-phase power, you'll probably end up driving to Edinburgh.

Dundee's studio costs are low by any comparison — when spaces are available for hire, they tend to be priced well below Edinburgh rates, which are themselves already below London rates. For a portrait or headshot session, a Dundee studio day at under £200 is realistic. The trade-off is availability and the need to do more legwork upfront to identify and book what exists.

The drive between them

Aberdeen to Dundee is about 1 hour 20 minutes by road — close enough that photographers working regularly in both cities often maintain loose connections in each. Edinburgh is another 90 minutes south of Dundee. Glasgow is 90 minutes west of Edinburgh.

For a photographer based in Aberdeen or Dundee, Edinburgh is the practical hub for anything the local market can't offer: large cyclorama spaces, broadcast-grade studios, commercial production infrastructure. The drive is real — two to three hours from Aberdeen to Edinburgh — but it's the trade-off for being based in a city at the edge of the main production geography.

What's worth booking vs what's worth skipping

Worth booking in Aberdeen and Dundee:

Corporate headshot days — the client base is there and the studio cost is lower than central belt alternatives
Portrait and lifestyle work for local clients — saves travel for everyone
Location shoots with studio editing base — use the studio for portraiture and the city for the exterior work

Worth skipping (and driving south instead):

Large-scale commercial productions with complex lighting rigs
Car photography (no cyclorama at scale in either city)
Fashion editorial needing significant production infrastructure
