Most people working the south coast drive to London for anything that needs a proper studio. Or they book Brighton, which has a thin scene of its own. Bournemouth gets overlooked — which is honestly a shame, because the studio infrastructure here is better than the reputation suggests.

I've been shooting in the Bournemouth/Poole area for two years, picking up commercial work that used to mean a 2.5-hour train to Waterloo and back. The infrastructure isn't perfect — I'll be honest about that — but for certain briefs there's no reason to leave the county.

The honest state of the scene

Bournemouth is a coastal city of around 220,000 people, which puts it in the bracket of cities like Newcastle or Cardiff rather than Manchester or Birmingham. The studio scene is proportional to that. You're looking at fewer than ten dedicated hire spaces, and not all of them are worth listing.

But the ones that are work. And rates across the board are below London equivalents — meaningfully so for day-rate briefs. That gap is the point.

Studios worth knowing

DE Studios

The headline space in the Bournemouth area if you need proper production capacity. 2,000 sq ft — which is a serious footprint for a south coast studio. There's an infinity cove, a fully fitted kitchen (useful if you're shooting food or lifestyle content that needs a realistic domestic space), and drive-in access. That last one matters more than listing copy usually suggests: being able to get a van to the door without a fifteen-minute carry changes how the load-in feels.

It sits in the BCP conurbation — Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole. Hire is available from 8:30am through 6pm standard, with earlier or later slots by arrangement. For day-rate commercial work, this is probably the first call in the area.

Pro Studio Hire

Near Poole rather than central Bournemouth, which either matters or doesn't depending on where you're coming from. Pro Studio Hire has an infinity cove and a green screen — the same space, presumably, dressed differently — plus access to make-up, stylists and set build support. The production infrastructure is wider than most studio-only hire spaces.

If you're bringing in a crew and need more than just a room with power sockets, this is the one to investigate first. The setup suggests they're accustomed to commercial agencies rather than just solo freelance bookings.

StudioRoost

Different character entirely from the two above. StudioRoost is in Boscombe, in a former post office building — BH1 postcode, close enough to the beach that you could walk it in ten minutes, which is either irrelevant or the best part of the brief depending on your day.

The vaulted ceilings are the thing here. For a south coast studio, the ceiling height is good — and ceiling height in Bournemouth is harder to find than you'd think. There are textured backdrops, a large natural-light area, and a decent prop collection. The aesthetic is more editorial than the clean commercial white-box look of DE Studios. If the brief calls for something with a bit of character — textured walls, the period features of the building, a less clinical look — this is the space I'd check first.

The Chapel Studio

Southbourne, which puts it on the east side of Bournemouth. 950 sq ft — smaller than DE Studios, but there's a garden, free parking, changing room, kitchen and toilet. For portraits, headshots, small product work or content days, this ticks the practical boxes without the production-company framing of the bigger spaces.

And the free parking is worth mentioning again. I've booked studios in Bristol and Southampton where the parking situation alone added £25 to the day. Southbourne is not that.

The Picture House

Full production setup — studio hire, equipment rental, production support. I haven't personally used this one, but it sits in the Bournemouth market as a full-service option rather than a bare-room hire space. Worth a conversation if you're running a larger shoot that needs kit on the day rather than hauling everything down from London.

What rates look like in practice

Hourly rates in Bournemouth for a usable photography studio sit broadly between £40 and £90/hr. The bigger production-capable spaces (DE Studios, Pro Studio Hire) tend to work on half-day and full-day blocks rather than pure hourly. DK Capture Studios — another option in the area I've referenced but haven't personally hired — runs from around £35 for an initial two-hour block, with day rates available on request.

Compare that to London equivalents — £90–£150/hr for comparable spec in areas like Hackney or Park Royal — and the south coast starts to look sensible for clients who aren't tied to London postcodes.

Half-day and full-day block pricing tends to be where the value concentrates. If you're heading to Bournemouth, it's worth booking a half-day minimum rather than hourly, both because most studios prefer it and because you'll want the setup time on an unfamiliar space.

Where the scene falls short

The cyclorama situation is limited. If your brief needs a purpose-built 12m+ cyclorama with 4.5m ceiling height for a car or large-scale product shoot, Bournemouth isn't the answer. DE Studios has the infinity cove, but it's not the same as a full drive-in car studio — and nothing in the immediate area is.

Daylight studio options are thinner than London too. There are natural-light spaces, but dedicated north-facing daylight studios of the kind that make fashion and beauty photographers happy? Fewer of them than the London or Manchester market provides. StudioRoost has some natural light courtesy of the building's architecture, but it's not a controllable north-facing specification.

And the overall market depth is smaller. In London or Manchester you can shortlist six strong spaces and narrow down. In Bournemouth you're comparing three or four genuinely viable options. That's not a problem once you know which space suits your brief — but it does mean less redundancy when your first choice isn't available on the date you need.

Getting there

By road, Bournemouth is roughly 2 hours from London on the A338/M3 route, more in traffic. By train from London Waterloo it's just under 2 hours to Bournemouth Central. Most of the studios I've listed have parking — which matters if you're driving down with kit. The road access from the north via the M27/A31 is reasonably clean.

If you're Portsmouth or Southampton-based, Bournemouth is a realistic half-hour-to-forty-minute drive. For anything in that geography where Brighton would mean heading the wrong direction entirely, the south coast west option makes sense.

When Bournemouth is the right answer

Book here when the brief is commercial, portrait or product work and you're based on the south coast. When a London day rate plus travel doesn't pencil out. When you need production infrastructure — drive-in access, kitchen sets, full-production support — at rates that reflect the geography rather than the postcode.

And for location-based editorial work where the beach, coast or Jurassic Coast landscape is part of the shoot — there's nowhere in the country that gives you that alongside a 2,000 sq ft studio within fifteen minutes' drive. That combination is unique, and it's genuinely underused.
