Booked a shoot in Cambridge last winter — headshots for a biotech firm near the science park — and spent longer finding the right studio than I spent on the actual day's photography. Not because I was being fussy. Because Cambridge's studio market is genuinely thin relative to the city's economic footprint. This is a city that hosts some of the most heavily-funded research and commercial enterprises in the UK, generates enormous demand for commercial photography, and has a dedicated studio supply that hasn't kept pace.

Here's the honest picture for 2026, and where I'd actually book.

Why Cambridge's studio market is smaller than you'd expect

A few structural reasons. The university estate dominates central Cambridge in a way that suppresses the kind of industrial-conversion studio development you see in Manchester or Leeds. There's very little of the cheap post-industrial space that produces affordable creative studios in northern cities — Cambridge land values are high, and the available commercial space competes with tech and life sciences tenants who pay substantially more per square foot than a photography studio can afford.

The photography market in Cambridge is also characterised by a lot of sole-trader professionals who work out of home setups or small personal studios. The demand for dedicated commercial hire studios is real — it's just not concentrated enough, or at sufficient price points, to drive the level of supply you'd find in a comparably-sized northern UK city. That said: there are good spaces here. You just need to know where to look.

Central Cambridge: what exists

In and immediately around the city centre, the studio options are mostly small-to-medium daylight rooms operated by working photographers as hire-out spaces. Ceiling heights in the Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings that dominate the centre tend to run at 2.7–3.2m — fine for portrait, headshot and small-product work, limiting for anything involving overhead lighting rigging or a large cyclorama.

Rates for central Cambridge studio hire in 2026 run at roughly £45–80/hr depending on size and kit inclusion. Day rates: £300–550 for a full booking. These are comparable to the lower end of London rates but you're getting less floor area and less technical infrastructure. For the right brief — a headshot commission for a consultancy, a product shoot for a small brand, editorial portrait work — that's a completely reasonable trade. For a brief that needs a 200sqm white infinity cove, these spaces can't help you.

A small number of arts and creative workspace organisations in the city centre have studio spaces available for commercial hire. The quality varies considerably. Some have been properly fitted out for photography use, with seamless backdrop capability, good daylight management and adequate power. Others are essentially event or workshop spaces where someone's put in a paper backdrop roll and called it a photography studio. Check the photos carefully, ask the specific spec questions, and ideally go and look before you commit a booking fee for a commercial brief.

The Cambridge Science Park and northern cluster

The Cambridge Science Park and the cluster of tech and research businesses along the A14 corridor to the north and west of the city have generated a different category of space that's worth knowing about: modern commercial buildings with good natural light, clean interiors, and a degree of photographic neutrality that works well for tech and corporate briefs. These aren't photography studios in the traditional sense — they're primarily office or lab facilities — but a growing number are available for location hire for commercial photography purposes.

This requires a different booking process: you're typically going through a facilities management company rather than a studio owner. Lead times are longer (often two to three weeks minimum), rates are negotiated rather than published, and there are more restrictions on what you can bring in and how you can use the space. But for a brief that needs to look like a genuine tech or research environment, having access to the real thing — rather than a studio simulation of it — is a significant creative advantage.

Ely and the surrounding Cambridgeshire market

Ely, twenty minutes north of Cambridge by train and about the same by car, has a small but functional photography space market that's worth knowing about for location flexibility. The city is smaller than Cambridge, rents are lower, and there are a handful of photographer-run studio hire spaces that offer more floor area for the price than you'd find in central Cambridge.

The market rate difference isn't enormous — Ely studios tend to run £35–65/hr, versus £45–80/hr in Cambridge — but the floor area tends to be larger and the parking situation is substantially easier. If you're bringing a full kit and a crew of any size, the logistics of central Cambridge parking can add thirty minutes or more to a setup. Ely doesn't have that problem.

The aesthetic limitation of Ely studios is that they're mostly generic purpose-converted spaces. Less of the period character that some central Cambridge buildings have. Fine for commercial and corporate work where you're controlling all the aesthetics within the frame anyway; less ideal if the brief has any architectural component.

What Cambridge doesn't have

Being direct about the gaps: Cambridge currently doesn't have a dedicated commercial-grade cyclorama studio of any significant scale. If your brief needs a cyc of more than 5m width, or ceiling height above 3.5m, or three-phase electrical supply for a heavy lighting package — you're looking at driving to another city.

London is eighty minutes from Cambridge on a fast train. For a full production day, getting a Hackney Wick or Bermondsey studio with proper infrastructure is genuinely a viable option, and the studio quality difference justifies the travel for commercial briefs of any scale. Cambridge to London Kings Cross on the fast train is consistently under 50 minutes; equipment can travel on the train or in a production vehicle arriving separately. It's not ideal, but it's better than compromising your production brief on an underpowered local facility.

Peterborough, an hour north, has a slightly better-developed commercial studio market than Cambridge. It's not glamorous, but for a brief that needs more infrastructure than Cambridge can currently offer without London's price tag, it's worth knowing that it's there.

My honest recommendation for Cambridge briefs in 2026

For headshot commissions, small-product photography, editorial portrait work and lifestyle content that doesn't need major technical infrastructure: Cambridge and Ely have good enough options. The studios I've used here work well for the right brief, the owners are generally hands-on and easy to deal with, and the rates are fair for what you get.

For commercial briefs that need a properly equipped studio — significant floor area, a cyclorama, meaningful power supply, loading access, the kind of infrastructure that shows up in productions with a real budget — be honest with yourself about the market limitations and either plan the logistics around a London booking or check the Peterborough options. The right studio for the brief is the right call, regardless of whether it's local.
