Derby doesn't come up much in the studio hire conversation. Ask most UK photographers where they'd look for a quality commercial studio and you'll hear Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Birmingham — Derby rarely gets a mention. That's partly habit, partly the fact that the city's studio scene is relatively small. But it's also partly wrong.

I've shot in Derby three times in the past eighteen months — a product campaign for a local manufacturing brand, headshots for a professional services firm, and a lifestyle shoot for a regional food brand. The studios varied significantly. Here's what I actually found.

The Darley Abbey Mills situation

The most interesting thing about Derby's studio scene is that two of its best spaces are inside the same Grade I listed industrial complex at Darley Abbey Mills, about a mile and a half north of the city centre. The mill buildings are beautiful — original brick, high ceilings, enormous windows on the north side of the complex. If you want that industrial-heritage aesthetic without building a set for it, Derby is genuinely one of the better options outside London.

Brickwork Studio occupies one of the converted mill units. The space itself is an industrial loft — polished concrete floor, exposed brick, large windows bringing in decent north-east light. It's set up for photography, film and podcast work, with a kitchen area and props available. The aesthetic is raw but clean, which suits lifestyle, product and brand briefs that want texture without chaos.

Flux Photography Studio is also on the Darley Abbey site. This one's the more production-focused option — drive-in access, which is rare for a city-centre-adjacent venue, plus an infinity cove and a kitchen set. The drive-in door matters if you're bringing C-stands, apple boxes, grip equipment or any quantity of props that won't fit in a car boot. I've lost too many shoot mornings trying to trolley gear through narrow corridors in converted buildings. A proper drive-in door is worth paying for.

City centre: The Boardroom Studio

The Boardroom Studio sits in Derby's Cathedral Quarter, which is the most central option I know of in the city. It's a Grade II listed building — beautiful proportioned room, high ceiling, the kind of space that photographs well without any dressing at all. Better for fashion, lifestyle and portrait work than for commercial product shoots that need a seamless setup or large cyclorama.

The space is smaller than the Darley Abbey options, which means it works best for a tight crew. Three or four people plus talent is comfortable. Much beyond that and the room starts to feel busy. But for corporate headshots, modelling portfolios or editorial fashion, the architectural character does half the work for you.

Studio 9 Derby

Studio 9 advertises 56 square metres of open floor space, which puts it firmly in the mid-size bracket — big enough for product work with a couple of light stands, not big enough for a car or large furniture piece. The key question with any studio at this size is ceiling height, because 56m² with a 2.4m ceiling is functionally more limited than it looks on paper. Worth confirming before you commit.

For e-commerce catalogue work, headshots or small-product photography, Studio 9 is worth a look. The location is accessible, which matters for clients travelling from across Derbyshire.

What's not in Derby

No large-format cyclorama. If your brief needs a cyc with genuine depth — a car shoot, a furniture campaign, a full-length fashion shoot where you need a runner of background and a five-metre camera distance — Derby doesn't currently have what you need. Kinetics Studios in Kettering (about forty minutes south-east on the A43) has one of the larger infinity coves in the Midlands region and is worth knowing about for those briefs.

There's also no major blackout studio in Derby as far as I've found. If your brief is video-heavy and you need full light control — no windows, blackout roller shutters, the works — you're better off looking at Nottingham, which has dedicated blackout facilities, or heading to Birmingham.

Getting there

Derby is genuinely easy to reach from most of the Midlands. The A52 from Nottingham takes twenty-five to thirty minutes on a clear morning. The A38 from Birmingham is forty-five minutes. Sheffield is about the same. For crews coming in by train, Derby station is fifteen minutes by taxi to Darley Abbey — not ideal, but not a disaster either.

Parking is the bit that's easier than I expected. Darley Abbey Mills has a reasonable amount of on-site parking for a production day. The Cathedral Quarter is harder — standard city centre rules apply, and street parking gets tight by nine in the morning.

Rates

I've paid between £40 and £90 per hour at Derby studios, which puts the city below Birmingham and comfortably below Manchester on a like-for-like basis. The lower end covers smaller spaces without drive-in access. The upper end gets you a bigger floor, drive-in, and included kit. For full-day bookings, I've found studios more willing to negotiate in Derby than in larger cities — probably a reflection of the market being less saturated.

The trade-off for those rates is that the studios are smaller and the market thinner. You're less likely to find a studio with an extensive in-house kit list or a dedicated studio manager on-site. Most Derby studios run lean — which is fine if you're BYOL (bring your own lighting), less ideal if you were counting on borrowing Godox AD600 Pro heads and a 4x6 softbox from the venue.

Should you shoot in Derby?

Yes — if your brief fits what the city has. Industrial heritage look? Darley Abbey works. Drive-in production day with a mid-size crew? Flux Studio is solid. Corporate portraits in a period room? The Boardroom. But if you need a large cyclorama, full blackout, or an extensive kit-included package, Derby will send you to a neighbouring city.

For brands based in the East Midlands, shooting in Derby makes a lot of sense — local crew, lower rates, genuinely interesting spaces. For London or Manchester-based productions chasing a specific look, it's worth knowing about as an option when the brief allows.
