Edinburgh is one of those shoot destinations where the logistics either work beautifully or are a mild pain, depending on where you're staying and what you're trying to do. I shot a hotel brand campaign there in February — two days in a Leith studio, one on location around the city — and came away genuinely impressed at both the quality of the studio space and how much more affordable it was than the equivalent London booking would've been.

The city has a real photography and film industry, driven partly by Screen Scotland funding, partly by the city's tourism and hospitality sector, and partly by a design and creative community that's grown faster than London's coverage of it would suggest. The studio infrastructure has grown to match. Not the depth of Manchester, nowhere near London — but for a properly planned shoot, Edinburgh delivers.

The Leith cluster

Leith is the obvious starting point for anyone searching for Edinburgh photography studios. The old port district north of the city centre has been Edinburgh's creative overflow zone for the last decade — converting docks, warehouses and Victorian commercial buildings into studios, galleries, and production spaces. It's a fifteen-minute walk or a five-minute cab from Waverley station. Parking is more available than central Edinburgh. Loading access is usually fine.

Studio128 is the name that comes up most in Leith. Based at 128 Pitt Street, it's one of Edinburgh's larger photography and film hire studios — purpose-built or properly converted for the use, with the kind of floor area and ceiling height that commercial work needs. It's well-regarded in the Edinburgh creative community and is close enough to The Shore (Leith's waterfront) that you can shoot on location nearby and use the studio as a base. Worth a viewing if you're putting together any kind of commercial brief in Edinburgh.

The average rate for commercial photography locations in Edinburgh runs around £74 per hour according to platform data, with full studio spaces averaging higher — around £142 per hour. The gap between those two figures reflects the difference between raw space hire and purpose-equipped studio spaces. Know which one your brief actually needs.

EH3 Studios, Fountainbridge

EH3 Studios is in Edinburgh's west end, in the Fountainbridge area — about a kilometre from Haymarket station and reasonably well-connected. It's a 38 square metre space, which puts it firmly in the "smaller commercial and portrait" category rather than large-scale production. But for the brief that fits — brand portraits, fashion test shoots, single-subject product work, social content — the west-end location and the studio quality are both good.

Being honest: 38m² is on the compact side for anything that needs lighting setups with multiple large modifiers at working distance. A Profoto B10 and a reflector will fit fine. An Arri SkyPanel on a boom plus a couple of Godox AD600B heads on stands starts to feel cramped. Know your lighting plan before booking any small studio.

Burgh Studios

Burgh Studios is a name I've heard consistently from Edinburgh-based photographers when the conversation turns to hire spaces. It operates with published rate cards — unusual for Edinburgh studios, which tend to price on enquiry — and it covers photography and film hire with a more formal production setup than some of the smaller spaces in the city.

For shoots that need clear pricing upfront for client budgets, the transparency is useful. For the kind of small commercial shoot where you just need the space and aren't sure whether the budget justifies the enquiry, having a published rate card saves a round of emails. Worth checking their website for current rates rather than quoting figures here — pricing changes.

What Edinburgh does differently to London studios

A few things are worth flagging if you're used to London or Manchester studio bookings. First: Edinburgh studios tend to be more flexible on last-minute bookings than London equivalents. The market is smaller and the demand-to-supply ratio is less extreme, which means you're less likely to be blocked on a forty-eight-hour notice booking. Good if your shoot scheduling is fluid. Not reliable enough to depend on for a commercial campaign with a fixed delivery date.

Second: the Edinburgh creative community is tight and word-of-mouth matters. If you arrive in the city, shoot well, and treat the studio properly, you'll get recommendations and repeat access that you wouldn't get from a London studio where the booking volume means individual clients blur together. That relationship texture is worth investing in on a first Edinburgh booking.

The light question: why Edinburgh is seasonal

This matters more in Edinburgh than most UK cities. In December and January, usable daylight in Edinburgh starts around 9am and is gone by 3pm. In June, you have fifteen-plus hours of daylight and soft, long light that's genuinely extraordinary to shoot in. If your brief involves daylight studio work in Edinburgh, the month of year affects not just the quality of the light but how many shooting hours you can plan around it.

Edinburgh's latitude (roughly 56°N) means northern-window studios here give you a different quality of indirect daylight to the same window orientation in London. Lower sun angle, cooler colour temperature, more diffuse quality. Some photographers find it beautiful; others find it flat. I tend to find it excellent for product and portraiture but occasionally tricky for video where colour grading needs to handle a wide range of source temperatures in the same shoot day.

If you're booking a daylight studio in Edinburgh for winter work, ask specifically about the usable light window the studio typically sees on overcast December or January days. The answer will tell you how much you need to supplement artificially and whether the "daylight studio" description is earning its billing year-round or only in summer.

Rates: what Edinburgh costs

As noted above, Edinburgh commercial photography locations average around £74 per hour. Full studio spaces run higher. The range I've seen for properly equipped Edinburgh studios — white-box, good lighting rig, decent ceiling height — sits between £60–£120 per hour, or roughly £400–£750 for a full day. That's cheaper than London, broadly comparable to Manchester, and slightly higher than Glasgow for equivalent spaces.

The Edinburgh premium comes partly from geography — it's a more expensive city than Glasgow in general — and partly from demand during peak tourism seasons (August, especially) when the city is busy and everything costs more. If you can avoid booking Edinburgh studio time in August, the rates are more negotiable and the city itself is easier to move around in.

Logistics: getting there and around

Edinburgh Waverley is on the East Coast Main Line — about four and a half hours from London King's Cross, around an hour from Newcastle. For crews flying, Edinburgh Airport is about thirty minutes from the city centre by tram, which is actually a usable option with a reasonable kit load. By car from the south: the A1 and M8 give you access to Leith and the west end without going through the city centre.

Parking in central Edinburgh is expensive and heavily restricted. Leith has cheaper and more available parking than the city centre, which is another reason it's become the natural home for hire studios. Loading access in Leith's warehouse conversions is generally good. The Streets around The Shore and in the converted dock buildings are wider than much of central Edinburgh.

Finding the spaces

And one practical note: if you're coming from London for a single-day Edinburgh shoot, the four-and-a-half-hour train journey means an early start and a late finish, or a hotel night. Price in the accommodation before comparing Edinburgh studio rates against London equivalents. The studio saving can disappear into a hotel night. On multi-day shoots the maths are clearer.

Edinburgh for video production

Edinburgh has a respectable video production ecosystem, partly driven by the TV and film production that comes through Screen Scotland's funding programmes. If you're shooting video in an Edinburgh studio — branded content, corporate films, short-form social video — the local crew availability is better than the city's size would typically produce. Gaffers, sparks, camera operators, and grips with proper credits exist in the Edinburgh market; you don't have to import everyone from London.

For photography specifically, the Edinburgh studio market is oriented more towards portrait and commercial photography than towards large-scale production. The spaces tend to be mid-sized rather than full-stage — 50–150sqm is typical for the purpose-built studios, with some larger converted spaces available at the upper end. Know your crew size before booking; Edinburgh studios that are listed as "suitable for productions" can fill up quickly if you're bringing eight people and a full lighting grid.

Edinburgh vs Glasgow for a Scotland studio booking

This comes up constantly. Short version: for production logistics, Glasgow usually wins. More studio space, better priced, easier van access, more developed crew and kit-rental infrastructure. For location character — the visual identity of Scotland's most photographed city, the Old Town, the New Town, the castle — Edinburgh wins emphatically.

If your brief has a controlled studio element only, book Glasgow and save money. If your brief mixes studio work with Edinburgh location shots, book Edinburgh for the studio too — it's not worth the commute between cities on a shoot day. If you're shooting for a client who specifically wants Scottish visual identity rather than just "somewhere in Scotland", Edinburgh's architectural character is hard to approximate elsewhere.

A practical note on peak season

August in Edinburgh is the Festival. The city is at maximum capacity, accommodation is expensive and hard to book, and getting a Transit van with kit through the city centre during the Fringe is a special kind of frustration. If you're planning an Edinburgh studio booking in August, factor in the August premium on accommodation and the logistical complications of a city at full tourism capacity. September is a much easier month operationally — the festival has cleared, prices drop, and the city is significantly easier to move around in.

What to ask on a studio viewing in Edinburgh

Before committing to an Edinburgh studio booking — especially for commercial work — I ask a short list of questions. What's the maximum power draw in the shooting room? What's the ceiling height at the mid-point of the floor, not just under the beam? What's the loading access like, and is there a lift if the studio is above ground floor? Can you access the space thirty minutes before the session starts for setup, and is that included in the hire rate or billed extra?

Edinburgh studio owners are generally responsive to these questions. A good studio will answer them clearly and without hesitation. A studio that gives vague answers about "plenty of power" and "easy access" is worth following up with more specific requests — or viewing in person before committing a deposit.
