Hackney Wick has been my most-used London postcode for photography studio hire for the last two years. Not Shoreditch, not Bermondsey, not the bits of Hackney that show up on the first page of every studio directory. Hackney Wick — E9, the canal-side stretch between the Overground station and the Olympic Park — where the rents are still marginally lower, the ceilings are higher because the units are genuine industrial conversions, and the loading access doesn't involve a goods lift that stops working three times a week.

Here's what's actually there, and why I keep coming back.

What makes Hackney Wick different

The honest answer is history. A lot of Shoreditch and Dalston's studio infrastructure got built out in the 2000s and 2010s, which means it was designed for the studios of that era — smaller footprints, lower ceilings, the kind of spaces that work fine for editorial portrait work but start to creak when you bring in a full product rig or need twelve feet above a car.

Hackney Wick's conversion wave came slightly later, and the units were bigger to start with. Industrial buildings along the Lea Navigation — actual factories, warehouses, print works — repurposed with production in mind rather than just aesthetics. The ceiling heights in the better studios sit between 5m and 7m. Loading access is, in most cases, ground level. The power infrastructure is serious — these weren't converted from Victorian residential; they were commercial and industrial properties with proper electrical supply from day one.

Bigger, taller, better-connected to the road network, with a canal backdrop that's been in more commercial campaigns than I can count.

The studios and what they're set up for

I'm not going to name specific venues here because the Hackney Wick studio scene turns over fast — spaces open, rebrand, close, reopen under different ownership — and anything I write now might be wrong by the time you read it. But the types of spaces available are consistent.

The first type is the large white studio with infinity cove. There are several of these in the E9 and E20 belt. Coves ranging from 8m to 12m wide, with ceiling heights that genuinely accommodate a car shoot and the lighting rig that goes with it. These spaces typically have 63A 3-phase power or better, proper loading access, and basic grip hire available on site. Day rates for the larger spaces run £450–£700+VAT for a 10-hour block.

The second type is the daylight studio in converted industrial space. North-facing or east-facing windows, double-height glass, the kind of diffused light that costs a fortune to recreate with HMIs. These are the rooms I book for fashion editorials where I want natural light and I'm willing to schedule around it. Rates tend to be slightly lower than the cove studios — £300–£500+VAT — because they're less capital-intensive to build out.

The third type is the multi-room studio complex — buildings where someone's taken an entire floor and divided it into three or four hire spaces, with shared changing rooms, a kitchen, and a client lounge. These are the most useful for day-long productions with multiple setups, because you can move between rooms without breaking down and rebuilding a whole set. They're also the spaces where rates are most negotiable on multi-day bookings.

Power: what to check

The Hackney Wick studios I rate most are the ones that were serious industrial spaces first. That means their electrical infrastructure is genuinely built for production loads. But not all of them are.

Some of the smaller units along the canal were converted on tight budgets, which means the fancy exposed-brick aesthetic is intact but the electrical panel is a 60A total supply running everything in the building. Ask specifically: what is the total amperage of the studio's dedicated supply? What's on a separate circuit from the main lighting rig? Is there a permanent 32A 3-phase outlet, or do they mean a 16A adaptor with a 3-phase face plate on it?

I run an Aputure LS 600d Pro (≤720W at full draw) and typically pair it with a couple of Godox AD600 strobes and a practical or two. That setup alone is hitting 1.5–2kW without the monitors and MacBook. A shared 20A domestic ring main makes that genuinely stressful. A dedicated 32A circuit makes it comfortable.

Access and logistics

Hackney Wick Overground station is one of the better studio-access stations in London. It's on the London Overground, giving you direct connections to Highbury and Islington, Stratford, and across to Dalston Junction without going anywhere near the Central London scrum. For crew coming from across the city, it's often more convenient than Shoreditch or Bermondsey.

Road access is where it really earns its place. From White City to Hackney Wick in a camera van at 6am is thirty-five minutes on a good day. Coming from the north — Tottenham, Haringey — it's arguably better than anything in Zone 1. Loading bay access at the industrial spaces is almost universally ground-level or has a proper tailgate area. The difference between arriving calm at 7am and arriving stressed at 7:30am because you couldn't get a trolley to the goods lift is worth more than a £50 saving on the day rate.

Parking: variable. The canal-side studios often have some associated parking — check in advance. The Olympic Park area has paid car parks that are available if not cheap. Street parking in the residential streets behind the Wick is time-limited and inconsistent. If you're arriving with a camera van and a grip truck, budget for the car parks or organise drop-off logistics in advance.

Rates: what I've paid in 2026

The range in Hackney Wick is genuinely wide. At the budget end — smaller rooms, no cove, shared facilities — spaces go from £60–£80 per hour. At the production end — large cove, 3-phase power, dedicated changing and make-up rooms, client lounge — you're looking at £500–£750+VAT for a full day.

Comparison with central London at equivalent spec: I've found Hackney Wick running about 15–25% cheaper for the same studio size and power spec. That's not nothing. On a two-day commercial shoot that's £200–£400 back in the budget.

Half-day rates are available at most spaces. I've found them most useful for product work where the brief is genuinely contained — flat lay selects, a pack shot sequence, a single hero setup — and you know you can wrap by 2pm. Book the half-day, don't try to squeeze it into a full day booking you can't cancel.

The daylight question

If you want north light in east London, Hackney Wick is one of the better places to find it. Several converted industrial studios have large north-facing or north-east-facing windows at double height — the kind of window area that genuinely shapes a room. But east London light in summer is different from east London light in winter.

In June you've got usable light from 5am to 9pm with a lot of head in the day. In December you're working with a three-hour window from about 10am to 1pm where the light is actually doing what you want. Plan shoots around this rather than against it. Bookings at daylight studios in October through February that assume six hours of usable natural light are optimistic. Book the lighting rig as backup. Or book a studio with good blackout curtains and work exclusively with your own kit — often the cleaner call for winter commercial work.

What I tell first-time Hackney Wick bookers

Go in person. A lot of the listings — on every platform — undersell these spaces because whoever took the listing photos didn't come back when the light was right. Some of the best rooms I've used had mediocre listing images and were genuinely impressive in person. A fifteen-minute site visit before you commit to a multi-day booking is worth doing.

And check the ceiling height yourself. Not "approximately" — actually measure it, or ask the studio to. The difference between 4.2m and 5m sounds academic until you're trying to rig a softbox overhead on a car and you can't get the stand fully extended.

The studios are there. The infrastructure, for the most part, is real. Hackney Wick is the part of east London's production belt where the space-to-price ratio still makes sense in 2026.
