I'd been avoiding Manchester studios for years on the basis of a bad experience with a converted mill in 2021 that turned out to be a storage unit with a roll of white paper. This year I gave the city a proper run — five different studios across six months — and I came back with a significantly different view.

Manchester's photography studio scene is better than its reputation suggests, and in 2026 it's cheaper per square foot than anything comparable in London. Here's what I actually found.

Ancoats: the right neighbourhood for daylight

Ancoats is where Manchester's good studio options cluster. The old mill buildings along the canals have windows designed to flood floors with light — north-facing or east-facing, depending on the unit — and the building stock is genuinely photogenic. High ceilings, original brickwork, timber floors. It's the kind of environment that makes a lifestyle brief easy and a product brief possible.

Spectrum Studios runs two infinity coves in an Ancoats building. Not massive — each cove is the kind of size that suits a fashion shoot or small product run, not a car. But well maintained and bookable by the hour with a two-hour minimum. Rates I've seen there sit at £45–55 per hour for the cyc space, with full-day rates around £350–450.

Studio Bee, also in the Ancoats area, is a solid option for straightforward daylight and white-wall work. From around £120 per day at off-peak, which makes it the budget option in the area. The spec isn't exceptional but the price-to-access ratio is good for smaller briefs or test shoots.

Northern Quarter: tight but useful

NQ Photo Studio is the most established dedicated photography space in the Northern Quarter. The building is old enough that the light has character — uneven, which is sometimes exactly what you want and sometimes a nuisance. Floors are original and not entirely flat, which rules it out for certain product work but makes it interesting for editorial.

But the Northern Quarter is fundamentally a constrained environment. Streets are narrow, loading is a problem, and the spaces that have survived the last three years of commercial pressure in that neighbourhood are either very well-run or very cheap. Not much in between. Go in expecting character and limited infrastructure, and you'll be fine.

Parking around the Northern Quarter is a persistent nightmare. I always check whether the studio has any arrangement with a nearby NCP — most don't — and I budget for an Uber from the nearest accessible drop point when I'm bringing a lot of kit.

Salford Quays and MediaCity

Different world from Ancoats. The MediaCity cluster around the Quays has studios built for broadcast and corporate video production — properly soundproofed, consistent artificial light, clean backgrounds. If you're doing talking-head content, corporate interview work, or broadcast-spec presenter pieces, this is where to look.

The Foundry Film Studios on the edge of the Greater Manchester metropolitan area is one of the larger commercial options and has proper loading access — rare in Manchester city centre. Rates are towards the higher end for the city: £500–800 per day for film-spec studio space, which is still 25–30% below comparable London studio rates.

But Salford Quays is not a daylight destination. The studios there were built to be light-controlled, not light-flooded. If you're after natural window light and that particular northern daylight quality Manchester can actually produce on a good day, you need to be in Ancoats or Salford's side streets, not near the Quays.

South Manchester and Salford side streets

There's a scattering of studios across South Manchester — Didsbury, Chorlton, Hulme — that exist largely outside the platforms. These are owner-operated spaces, often cheaper than anything in the city centre, and sometimes better equipped than the price suggests. A few have appeared on Peerspace over the last year; more are direct-booking only.

I found a daylight studio in Hulme last autumn that I used twice and paid £200 per day. 80 sqm, white walls, two large north-facing windows, parquet floor. No cyc, no kit, no extras — but at £200 you're not expecting them. The sort of space that suits editorial or lookbook work on a tight budget.

The challenge with South Manchester studios is consistency. Some of the owner-operated spaces have variable availability and informal booking processes. Worth the effort for the right brief; frustrating if you need confirmed, date-locked access six weeks out.

The rate picture in 2026

Photography studio hire in Manchester averages around £45 per hour — that's roughly 35–40% below London rates for comparable spec. But the gap narrows on production cost when you factor in crew travel, accommodation if you're based in London, and kit transport. For a London-based photographer doing a Manchester job, the studio saving is real but not as large as the headline numbers suggest.

Half-day rates (four to five hours) are where Manchester studios are most competitive. Most spaces offer genuine half-day pricing rather than a simple multiple of the hourly rate — usually £180–280 for a half-day in a mainstream Ancoats studio. Full-day rates run £350–600 for established spaces with kit, up to £900 for anything with a proper cyc or significant production infrastructure.

The other thing that's genuinely cheaper in Manchester: parking. Some studios have dedicated loading spaces. The ones that don't are usually in industrial areas where double yellow enforcement is lighter than central London. My crew calls in Manchester start faster than they do in Hackney.

Daylight vs artificial: which Manchester studios do which well

Ancoats for daylight. Northern Quarter for character and mixed light. Salford Quays for clean artificial. That's the rough map.

The converted mills in Ancoats genuinely do daylight well — the north-facing windows in the old factory buildings give that flat, even, shadowless quality that's expensive to replicate with softboxes and OCF. But Manchester weather means it's a gamble outside late spring and early autumn. I always book an Ancoats daylight studio with a backup lighting plan and at least one Aputure 600d Pro in the kit bag.

For artificial-only work — product, catalogue, anything that needs absolute consistency across sessions — the Salford and MediaCity studios are the better choice. They were designed for it. The Ancoats mills were not.

Fashion and video production

Manchester has a growing fashion and video production scene, particularly in Ancoats and the Northern Quarter. The city's proximity to Liverpool, Leeds, and Sheffield means it functions as a production hub for the north of England in a way that London doesn't quite reach. Studios that are too small or pricey for London work are the right size and price for a Manchester brief.

But video production in Manchester — which I've done twice this year — has a specific infrastructure gap: proper loading access for grip and camera van equipment. It's the same problem as London, just at smaller scale. The studios that have it are noticeably better to work in on a full production day. The ones that don't have you unloading on a side street at 7am.

Ask the loading question first, same as you would in London. The answer usually determines whether the studio makes the shortlist.

What I'd actually book

For daylight editorial or lifestyle work: an Ancoats mill space. I'd view it in person before committing. I'd want north or east-facing windows and ceiling height above 3m. Budget £350–500 per day.

For fashion or catalogue e-commerce: Spectrum Studios cyc in Ancoats, or a comparable direct-booking space with a maintained infinity cove. £350–500 per day with proper infrastructure.

For video or corporate production: something in the Salford Quays belt. Loading access a priority, artificial light a given, budget £500–750 per day.

For a test shoot or a low-budget brief: South Manchester or Hulme owner-operated space. £150–250 per day, no frills, genuinely good value. Find them through direct search rather than a platform.
