Plymouth doesn't come up when London photographers talk about regional studio options. Bristol gets the south-west discussion. Cornwall gets the location-work conversation. Plymouth sits in the middle, slightly overlooked, which is a shame because it has a working studio infrastructure that's more capable than most people realise — and rates that make the argument for a west country shoot day without needing to apologise to the client.

I've been running shoots in Plymouth and the wider Devon area for two years. Here's the honest working picture for 2026.

Trident Studio: the city centre option

Trident Studio sits on Mutley Plain in central Plymouth — easily accessible, close to transport links, and set up specifically for photography and videography hire. The space has a 4.5m wide white infinity wall, which is the key spec for shoots where you need a clean wall-to-floor sweep. There's also a 3.6m wide white wall section with a 7-roll paper backdrop system, and a stylised textured wall option (described as a "Fancy Wall" with grey architrave detailing) for lifestyle shots that need a bit of architectural character.

Available to both amateur and professional creatives, which is worth noting — the pricing is structured to be accessible, not pitched exclusively at commercial production rates. If you're an independent photographer running your own client sessions rather than a production company with a full crew budget, this matters.

The infinity wall dimensions are the main spec to check against your brief. A 4.5m wide wall is fine for portrait, product, fashion and small lifestyle setups. It's not a full cyclorama for vehicle work or large furniture photography. If the brief needs a wider cyc, you're looking at a different studio.

Future Image Studios: drive-in access and production scale

Future Image Studios occupies a space at 6 Mary Seacole Road in Stonehouse — walking distance from the city centre, with the practical advantage of roller shutter door access that's genuinely useful for loading in larger kit. The pricing is built around the session model rather than an hourly rate, which means you know your cost upfront without calculating minimum booking fees.

Light Studios: the creative quarter option

Light Studios sits close to Union Street, close to Millbay Pier — that's in the western part of Plymouth, adjacent to the Stonehouse area that has the higher concentration of creative businesses. The space has a rooftop terrace with city skyline access, which is unusual for a Plymouth studio and gives you an exterior shooting option that's rare in a hire context. If your brief includes some rooftop or cityscape content alongside interior studio work, this combination is worth knowing about.

Devon beyond Plymouth

Outside Plymouth, Devon's studio provision is sparse. Exeter has some emerging creative space infrastructure, but dedicated photography studio hire outside Plymouth hasn't developed at scale yet. Torquay and the South Devon coast are essentially location-work territory, not studio territory.

For shoots requiring a proper studio spec and you're based in East Devon, the sensible calculation is: Plymouth or Bristol. Plymouth is usually quicker for mid-Devon locations. Bristol is larger, has more options, and might suit a brief that's more London-facing in style. Driving two hours to Bristol for a studio day instead of one hour to Plymouth only makes sense if the brief specifically needs Bristol's studio infrastructure or culture — it does exist, but it's a meaningful additional cost and time commitment.

Plymouth rates vs Bristol and London

This is where Plymouth makes its case. Bristol studios for production-capable spaces run £80–£150 per hour at the better-spec'd rooms in BS2 and the harbourside area. London equivalents for similar spec — full cyc, drive-in, decent ceiling — are typically £150–£250 per hour. Plymouth sits meaningfully below both of those, and the spec at Future Image Studios or Trident competes credibly with what you'd get at those rates in Bristol.

That's a genuine value argument for regional clients and for London photographers willing to travel for a brief that doesn't require a London postcode. If the client is flexible on location and the brief can be shot anywhere — product catalogue, fashion content, lifestyle brand imagery — Plymouth has a real case to make on the numbers.

What Plymouth studios don't offer (yet)

Depth of inventory. If Future Image Studios is fully booked and Trident doesn't have the spec for your brief, your options narrow quickly. There's no Plymouth equivalent of Leeds' South Bank or Manchester's Ancoats belt with a cluster of studios in one area. You're working with a shorter shortlist.

Also: prop rooms and styled interiors. The Plymouth studio scene is functional rather than styled. If your brief needs a living-room lifestyle set, a kitchen-table scene, or any kind of architectural interior — you'll either need to build it, hire props and bring them, or reconsider whether Plymouth is the right location. The studios here are clean shooting environments, not lifestyle spaces.

Getting there and logistics

Plymouth is accessible by train from London — about 3 hours on direct Great Western services, with reasonable connections from Bristol and Exeter. For London photographers taking kit by train, most of Plymouth's studios are within reasonable taxi distance of Plymouth station. Parking at all the main studios is available, which matters if you're driving a full kit load from anywhere west of Bristol.
