I'll be honest: Stoke-on-Trent wasn't on my radar until a client based in Staffordshire asked if I could recommend a studio that wasn't in Birmingham or Manchester. The interior of a bottle kiln is a genuinely unusual architectural space: circular, with brick walls rising to a high central vent, dark tones in the existing structure. It's nothing like a standard white-box studio.

The rate is £40 per hour with a two-hour minimum, which includes the full lighting rig, props and furniture, five clothing rails, dressing room, kitchen and bar area, shower facilities, and a breakout room. That's a meaningful included kit list for a studio at this price point. If you've been booking kit-included studios in Birmingham or Manchester, you'll notice the rate differential immediately — the same spec in a city-centre Birmingham studio would likely cost significantly more per hour.

The aesthetic is specifically suited to creative briefs — fashion editorial, music artist portraiture, brand work that wants texture and character rather than a neutral box. If your brief is "clean white cyclorama," this isn't the space. But if your brief is "somewhere with genuine character," the bottle kiln delivers something most UK studios literally cannot replicate.

The Boiler Works

The Boiler Works is the other space I'd point to in Stoke. It has an infinity curve, which the studio itself describes as one of the only curves in the city — and from what I can find, that's accurate. An infinity cove in this market means you can shoot clean, backgroundless product or portrait work without travelling to Birmingham or Manchester. For portrait days, headshot clients, or e-commerce product work, The Boiler Works gives the city a proper commercial studio option that goes beyond character spaces and lifestyle aesthetics.

I'd want to visit and confirm the ceiling height and the floor area of the cove before committing it to a large-format brief — those are the two measurements that determine whether an infinity curve actually works for a specific shoot. But the existence of a purpose-built cove studio in Stoke is genuinely useful for photographers and brands based in north Staffordshire who've been driving to the West Midlands for every controlled-background job.

Vivid Flow Studio

Also based in Stoke-on-Trent. Vivid Flow operates as a commercial photography and videography studio serving Staffordshire, Manchester and Birmingham, which tells you something about the positioning: they see themselves as part of a regional commercial market, not just a local resource. For brands that want to keep production in-county, it's worth a direct conversation about what the space can handle.

What the city still lacks

A drive-in production studio with serious floor area. The spaces I've found in Stoke are set up for commercial photography in the mid-size range — portrait, product, lifestyle, fashion. But if your brief needs a transit van through the door, a crew of fifteen, a large set build or an automotive shoot, you're still going to Manchester or Birmingham. The drive from Stoke to Manchester is under an hour on the M6. Birmingham is about forty-five minutes south on the M6 and M42. The city's geography means neither city is impractical.

For natural daylight studio hire — north-facing windows, consistent diffused light — I haven't found a dedicated option in Stoke. The city's studio market leans towards controlled artificial light environments, which is fine for most commercial work but might not suit a brief that specifically requires natural light quality.

Getting to Stoke

Stoke-on-Trent is on the West Coast Main Line, which means fast trains to and from London Euston, Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly. Driving from Manchester is straightforward via the M6 — forty-five minutes on a clear morning. Birmingham is a similar journey south. Crew coming from multiple directions converge on the M6 at junction 15 or 16, which is about as easy as motorway access gets in the Midlands.

Parking in Stoke is generally not the nightmare it is in Birmingham or Manchester city centres. The industrial estates where most studios are based have on-site parking as standard. Worth confirming that specifically when you book — particularly for the Kiln Studios, where the character of the location makes it worth checking access arrangements in advance.

The pricing reality

£40 per hour with a full kit-included package — as at Kiln Studios — is at the lower end of what I'd expect to pay for a properly equipped commercial studio in any UK city outside of rural locations. For independent photographers and smaller production companies that have been absorbing higher rates in Birmingham or Manchester, booking in Stoke for a Staffordshire-based client makes obvious sense. Even with a longer drive from a home base, the rate saving over a full day is real.

For larger corporate clients used to London or Manchester rates, Stoke's pricing is almost jarring in a good way. The same quality of shooting environment costs considerably less. The city's creative community is growing, which means more local freelancers available for assistant, styling and second-shooter roles without the additional cost of bringing everyone in from further afield.

Worth going to Stoke?

Yes — specifically when the brief suits the bottle kiln aesthetic, when the client is Staffordshire-based, or when you're price-sensitive and the M6 route works for your crew. The Boiler Works makes Stoke a more general-purpose option for standard commercial stills work than the city's reputation might suggest. And Kiln Studios offers something genuinely rare in the UK studio market: a shooting environment built inside a piece of industrial history.

That's not nothing. In a market where most city-centre studios are white-box conversions or purpose-built commercial blocks, a Victorian bottle kiln is worth knowing about.
