There's a specific kind of frustration that comes from booking a studio that claims "professional soundproofing" and then discovering — on your first recording day — that you can clearly hear the DHL van idling outside, and that someone in the corridor can make out what you're saying through the wall.

I've been there. Most audio-sensitive producers and podcast teams have been there at some point. The good news is that the difference between a genuinely soundproofed recording space and a room with some acoustic panels on the walls is testable, and you can do it in five minutes before you commit to a booking.

Acoustic treatment vs soundproofing: the distinction that matters

These two things are not the same. Most studios that describe themselves as "acoustically treated" have done exactly that: they've added foam panels, bass traps, diffusers, and possibly some heavy draping to manage the reflections within the room. This reduces the reverb and flutter echo in recordings made inside the space. It makes the room sound controlled and dry — which is what you want for voice recording.

But acoustic treatment doesn't stop sound from entering or leaving the room. A road drilling outside will still be clearly audible on a microphone in an acoustically treated room, even if the room sounds very clean on a quiet day. And sound from your recording session — your presenter speaking at normal conversational volume — will be audible through standard partition walls to anyone in adjacent spaces.

Soundproofing, by contrast, is about isolation — stopping sound from crossing the physical boundary of the room. It typically involves mass (heavy concrete or dense brick construction), decoupling (walls and floors that don't directly connect to the building structure, so vibrations can't transfer through the fabric), and air sealing (no gaps around doors, HVAC, or cable penetrations). A genuinely soundproofed studio is much more expensive to build than an acoustically treated one — costs for a serious studio build in the UK can run from £2,000 to £10,000 or more for professional-grade installation — which is why so many spaces choose acoustic treatment and call it soundproofing.

The five-minute test before you book

Ask the studio to let you view before committing to a booking. Most will, especially for new clients. Then do this:

Stand inside the room with the door closed and all HVAC off. Be completely still for 30 seconds. What can you hear? Traffic through the walls? A low-frequency hum from building services? Other voices from adjacent spaces? If you can hear any of these clearly, they'll be on your recording. A directional cardioid microphone like a Shure SM7B or a Rode NT1 picks up a narrower field than your ears, but it's not selective about mechanical vibrations or low-frequency rumble.

Next, clap sharply in the room and listen to the decay. A properly treated room kills the clap immediately — you hear the sound but no tail. A hard-walled untreated room produces a flutter echo you can clearly hear reverberating. Most "treated" studios fall somewhere between these two extremes.

Finally, ask someone to stand outside the closed door and speak at a normal conversational volume while you're inside. If you can make out words, anyone in the corridor can make out what your presenter is saying during a sensitive interview. That might matter or might not, depending on the content.

The two numbers that actually matter

If you're booking for serious audio work — commercial voiceover, podcast interviews with a high profile subject, music recording — ask the studio for their NRC and STC ratings.

NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) measures how much sound is absorbed within a room, on a scale from 0 (total reflection) to 1 (total absorption). A well-treated studio targeting broadcast or podcast recording should have NRC ratings of 0.85 or above across the problem frequency ranges — typically 250Hz to 4kHz for voice.

STC (Sound Transmission Class) measures how much sound is stopped from passing through walls, floors, and ceilings. An STC of 45 blocks reasonably loud speech from being intelligible on the other side of a wall. An STC of 55 is more appropriate for music or loud voice work. Studio-grade isolation typically aims for STC 60 or above. Standard UK partition walling between rooms in a converted office or warehouse is usually STC 30–35 — enough to muffle but not enough to genuinely isolate.

Many studios don't have these numbers readily available, which tells you something. A studio that's invested in professional acoustic isolation knows its STC rating and will tell you without hesitation.

London podcast studio rates and what they include

In London, professionally built podcast studios with both acoustic treatment and genuine isolation run roughly £90–£150 per hour including an engineer or technical support. Studios at the higher end of that range typically include all recording equipment — microphones, audio interface, monitoring headphones, and live streaming capability if needed. Studios at the lower end may be self-op.

For bare room hire (self-op, bring your own equipment), expect rates from £30–£60/hr in a standalone treated room, up to £80–£100/hr in a properly isolated studio environment. The gap between those ranges reflects the construction cost differential between acoustic treatment and genuine isolation.

Pod studios in Canary Wharf, TYX Studios in Hackney, and a range of specialist podcast facilities scattered across Shoreditch and Brixton have all grown significantly in 2025–2026 as the podcast and short-form video market has continued expanding. Supply has genuinely increased; competition is keeping rates from rising as fast as you might expect given the demand.

Outside London: what to expect

Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, and Edinburgh all have working podcast and voice recording studios, but the inventory is thinner and the quality range is wider. Some of the best recording spaces in those cities are attached to music studios — the recording infrastructure is excellent, the room design is proper, but the vibe is very much music production, and finding a clean neutral backdrop for video recording alongside your audio is less common.

For podcast work outside London, the practical advice is to book a viewing before committing to a full day, run the five-minute test, ask for NRC and STC if the studio knows them, and be explicit about whether you need genuine isolation or just a quiet, treated room. The brief matters: a talking-head interview in a nice-sounding room is a different requirement from a commercial voiceover job where the client has specific noise floor specifications.

Things studios conveniently don't mention

HVAC. Air conditioning is essential in a sealed, soundproofed room — the alternative is a comfortable room that gets uncomfortably hot within 30 minutes. But AC units create noise. Good studios have HVAC systems that can be switched off or damped during takes, or designed with acoustic baffling on the ducts so the unit is inaudible. Bad studios have an AC unit on the wall that roars loud enough to appear on a mid-sensitive mic. Ask specifically: can the HVAC be silenced during recording, and how is it managed?

Adjacent bookings. A soundproofed room is soundproofed from outside; it's not always soundproofed from the studio next door if there's another studio in the same building. Ask what's in adjacent spaces and whether they're double-booked on your shooting day.

Cable runs. Penetrations in walls for cable management — XLR, HDMI, ethernet, power — create acoustic weak points. A professional studio seals them. A quickly converted space might not. Check the doors and cable entry points specifically during your viewing.

The room-within-a-room: how proper isolation is built

The construction technique behind genuinely soundproofed studios is called room-within-a-room — a floating interior shell that's mechanically decoupled from the building structure around it. The floor sits on resilient mounts or neoprene pads. The walls are a double-leaf construction with an air gap and no rigid connections between the inner and outer leaf. The ceiling floats on hangers that absorb vibration before it can transfer. There's no continuous rigid path between the interior space and the building structure outside.

This is expensive to build properly. A 15–20 square metre podcast studio built to genuine isolation standard (STC 55 or above) might cost £20,000–£50,000 in construction and treatment, depending on the building type and what the starting point was. A converted office unit in Shoreditch that's had some Rockwool panels added to the walls has not had this work done. And it shows — on a microphone, in an audio recording, very clearly.

The reason this matters for booking decisions is simple: the acoustic treatment approach (the cheaper option that most studios have done) produces a room that sounds clean on a quiet day. On a busy London weekday with a delivery truck outside or a Tube line nearby, the isolation is inadequate. The room-within-a-room approach (the expensive one) produces a studio that's genuinely isolated from external noise regardless of what's happening outside. The price difference between hiring these two types of space is significant — £30/hr vs £100/hr is a reasonable general range — and the value difference for audio-critical work is also significant.

Microphone patterns and how they relate to studio specs

This is worth knowing before you book a studio based on the microphone they supply. A hypercardioid or supercardioid microphone (like the Shure SM7B or the Electro-Voice RE20, both very common in podcast studios) is highly directional — it rejects sound from the sides and rear quite aggressively. This makes it more forgiving in a mildly imperfect acoustic environment, because it's not picking up the room's walls as prominently.

An omnidirectional microphone, by contrast, picks up everything in the room equally. It sounds more natural and open (which is why high-quality condenser omnis are used in music recording), but it requires a much better-controlled room to produce a clean recording. If a studio offers you an omnidirectional condenser as the default microphone, their room treatment and isolation had better be excellent.

For most podcast and voice recording work, a large-diaphragm cardioid condenser or a dynamic directional mic (Rode NT1, Shure SM7B, AKG C414) will be more forgiving of a moderately treated room than an omni. Worth asking the studio what their standard microphone is and why, before you arrive and find yourself trying to manage room noise on an omni in a space that's quieter-than-normal but not quiet enough.

Booking a viewing: what to actually do in the room

If you can only do a viewing by video call rather than in person, ask the studio to switch on a microphone in the room and record 30 seconds of room tone — the sound of the room with no one speaking. Then listen to that file on decent headphones. You'll hear everything the room has: HVAC hum, building rumble, reflected silence or ambient noise. That 30-second file is more informative than any written description.

In person, the five-minute test I described earlier is what I do. Clap test. Room tone listening. Someone talking outside. Those three things tell you more about whether the space will work for your brief than any combination of listing photos and written descriptions.
