A portrait session has different demands from a fashion shoot or a commercial production day. The space doesn't need to be huge. The kit requirement is simpler. What matters more is the quality of the light, the comfort of the space for a subject who might already be nervous, and the absence of the kind of background noise that kills a quiet, focused session.

I've shot corporate headshots, environmental portraits, editorial pieces, and personal commissions across London for the last ten years. Here's where I actually book in 2026, and more importantly, why.

What portrait work actually needs from a studio

It's less than you'd think. A portrait session doesn't need a cyclorama. It doesn't need 5m ceilings. It doesn't need 3-phase power. What it needs:

A clean, controllable background. That can be a white wall, a sweep of seamless paper (9ft is the working standard for single-subject portraits — plenty of width and enough floor to go low without the bottom of the frame hitting the edge), or a painted surface. Grey, black, white: the three that most portrait clients want. Studios that offer multiple background options on hanging rails are more useful than ones with a single fixed backdrop.

Enough ceiling height to place a light modifier where you want it. For a standard clamshell setup — large octabox above the subject, fill reflector below — you need clearance to get the top box to eye level or slightly above. At 2.7m ceiling that's difficult. At 3m it's workable. At 3.5m you have real flexibility for adjusting the angle without hitting the ceiling with the arm of a Profoto Pro-11 or a big Westcott octabox.

A comfortable environment. This matters more for portrait work than for commercial production. A subject who's cold, who hears machinery through the wall, or who can't find the toilet is a subject who doesn't relax — and portrait photography depends entirely on a subject who's relaxed. Heating, a waiting area separate from the shooting floor, a changing space: not luxuries, tools.

Shoreditch and Bethnal Green: the density is right

Shoreditch has more bookable portrait-suitable studios per postcode than anywhere else in London. The density alone makes it useful — when a client asks for a studio they can reach by tube without a connection, Shoreditch is almost always viable. Old Street and Shoreditch High Street stations between them cover most of the city.

The quality varies enormously though. The street-level studios on some of the Shoreditch side streets are fine for test shoots and personal projects. The ones inside the larger converted commercial buildings — the spaces that used to be textile warehouses or light engineering units — are more serious. Better ceiling height, better floors, better acoustics.

For headshots and corporate portrait work, I tend to book spaces that are slightly off the main Shoreditch drag — the streets between Bethnal Green Road and the railway arches. Quieter, better access for clients arriving by cab, and often 10–20% cheaper than the equivalent room on a more obvious street. The rate for a decent portrait-spec studio in this zone runs £60–85 per hour in 2026.

Dalston: more character, less polish

Dalston is where the portrait studios with genuine personality are. The spaces here are more owner-operated, more idiosyncratic, and more interesting as environments — which matters for certain portrait briefs and is irrelevant for others.

For editorial portrait work — where the space itself can become part of the image — Dalston is the right neighbourhood. The walls have more texture, the floors have more history, the window light is the kind that comes through a slightly uneven pane and does something interesting at 2pm that no softbox quite replicates. I shot an environmental portrait series here last spring and the natural light through the north-facing windows in the afternoon was the best light I found anywhere in London that week.

Rates in Dalston typically run £50–75 per hour, slightly below Shoreditch. The tradeoff is that the spaces are more variable in quality — worth viewing before committing on a paid job.

Hackney Wick: daylight and industrial, not always suitable

Hackney Wick is a good answer for some portrait briefs and a wrong answer for others. The converted industrial spaces there tend to have the ceiling height and floor space that portrait work doesn't really need — they're optimised for commercial production days, not two-person portrait sessions.

But if your brief calls for a raw industrial backdrop — architectural concrete, rusted steel shutters, exposed brick — Hackney Wick is where you find it authentically rather than as a set-dressed recreation. I've used it a couple of times for documentary-style environmental portraiture where the location is explicitly part of the story. For corporate headshots? Wrong environment and probably overpriced for what you actually need from the space.

Peckham and Deptford: the south London option

South London portrait studios have improved significantly in the last two years. Peckham in particular has developed a credible studio scene — partly driven by the creative community that's been there since before it became expensive, partly by the wave of photographers who moved south when Shoreditch rents pushed them out.

For portrait work, the Peckham studios tend to be slightly larger spaces than you'd find at equivalent prices in Shoreditch, with better natural light in some cases. I've used two spaces around the Rye Lane and Copeland Park area — both owner-operated, both with good morning light from east-facing windows, both around £55–65 per hour. The commute for clients coming from central London is the tradeoff — the Overground gets there, but it's not the Old Street equivalent.

Deptford has a handful of spaces that have been quietly good for a long time. Less fashionable than Peckham currently, which means cheaper and easier to book at short notice. Worth knowing if you're a portrait photographer working regularly in South London.

The lighting setup I use most for London portrait work

For most portrait commissions — headshots, press portraits, actor shots — I run a Profoto B10 Plus (500Ws) through a large Profoto RFi Octa 3' as the key, with a 90cm Profoto umbrella fill about a stop and a half lower on the opposite side. The B10 Plus runs off battery, which means I'm not dependent on the studio's power supply quality for the main light source. It'll do 200 full-power flashes per charge — more than enough for a half-day headshot session.

For larger editorial or group portrait work, I'll bring in a Profoto Pro-11 2400Ws that plugs into the wall, paired with a 5' Westcott octabox. That combination gives me the output to shoot stopped down in a lit background without losing depth of field control. It pulls around 2,000W at full power, which means I need a decent 13A ring main minimum — and ideally two separate sockets so the recycle time doesn't conflict with anything else on the circuit.

The point is that portrait work doesn't demand the studio's kit. I bring my own lighting because I know what it does. That frees me from worrying about what the studio's included flash heads are capable of — which is usually the source of the question nobody asks until they're in the space and it's too late.

Daylight portrait studios: when they work and when they don't

Daylight portraiture is one of those areas where photographers split cleanly into two camps. Some only shoot flash; some only shoot available light. I do both, and the daylight choice depends entirely on the season and the time slot.

In London, north-facing window light is genuinely beautiful for portrait work between March and October. The indirect daylight is soft, even, and flattering. The colour temperature sits around 6,000–6,500K in overcast conditions, which is where most portrait subjects look their best on a daylight-balanced sensor. Between November and February, the window light in a north-facing London studio on an overcast day gives you roughly two hours of usable light in the middle of the day, and even that is marginal on the greyest days.

So if you're booking a daylight portrait studio in winter, book the 10am–noon slot, bring a backup light kit, and don't promise the client anything about natural light. If you're booking in June on a clear day, the north-facing window will be doing something extraordinary by 3pm and you won't want to stop shooting.

Rates and what they include

Portrait-suitable studio hire in London currently runs £55–90 per hour for the spaces I'd actually use. The lower end of that is Dalston and South London; the higher end is Shoreditch or anything with a fully equipped natural-light room and a separate changing area.

Half-day rates (four hours) for London portrait studios sit at £200–350. That's typically plenty of time for a headshot session of 3–5 people with a change between each, or for a solo editorial portrait session that wants to move between backgrounds and lighting setups.

Most portrait-spec studios include some form of backdrop paper — one roll is standard, sometimes two or three. Additional rolls are usually available to buy or rent on the day. Worth confirming in advance whether the studio's standard paper supply covers the colours your brief needs, rather than discovering mid-session that they're out of grey.

Platform bookings vs direct for portrait studios

A lot of portrait-scale London studios are on Peerspace and Giggster because they don't have significant direct booking infrastructure. The platform fee (10–15% guest surcharge on Peerspace, effectively 22–25% added to the cost via inflated Giggster prices) is more painful on a £200 half-day booking than on a £600 commercial day — proportionally it's the same, but the absolute amount is harder to swallow when you're not billing it back to a production budget.

For studios I use regularly, I'm on a direct rate. For new studios, I'll book once through the platform to verify the space, then ask about direct terms for repeat bookings. Most owner-operated portrait studios in Dalston and Peckham prefer direct bookings anyway — they get paid on the same day and avoid the admin overhead of the platform's payment schedule.
