Sports photography in a studio is one of those briefs that exposes a bad space booking faster than almost anything else. A portrait subject can sit on a stool in a 4m x 6m room and the shot works fine. A sprinter coming out of blocks needs ten metres of clear run-up before they're in frame. A boxer throwing combinations needs enough space to move without worrying about the C-stands on the periphery. A footballer doing keepie-uppies against a white background needs ceiling height that doesn't clip the ball at the top of the frame.

I've shot athletes in studios more times than I can count now. The bookings that went well and the bookings that went badly all come down to the same variables. Here's what they are.

The space requirements: more than you think

The minimum floor area for action sports photography depends entirely on what the athlete is doing.

For a stationary pose — a boxer in a fighting stance, a rugby player holding a ball, a gymnast in a static position — a 100sqm studio is workable. You've got enough room for the background, the lighting rig, the camera position, and a small crew without everyone being in each other's way.

For action — any kind of movement that builds up over distance — the calculation changes completely. A sprinter needs a run-up of at least 8–10 metres to reach a speed that reads as genuine action in the shot. A cyclist on a static trainer needs at least the length of the bike plus enough clearance for wide-angle framing. A basketball player going up for a dunk needs enough ceiling height to make the jump, plus the height of the extended arm above that. I've worked in studios where a tall player couldn't jump flat-out because the ceiling was 4.2m and their fingertips at full extension were at 4m.

My floor-space minimums for sports studio hire:

Static athletic poses: 100sqm minimum, 150sqm comfortable
Run-up or approach action (sprinters, strikers, martial arts): 200sqm minimum, with at least 12m of clear run-up along the long axis
Multi-athlete setups (team shots, sparring, doubles): 250sqm minimum

Ceiling height is the other critical dimension. For a vertical-jump shot — the standard dramatic sports image — I want at least 5m clearance above the floor. That gives most athletes room to jump without the top of the frame being clipped by the ceiling. For a ball-in-air shot with a taller subject, 6m is more comfortable.

Flooring: the spec nobody mentions

Standard studio floors are polished concrete or hardwood. Both are fine for most photography briefs. For sports photography, there are two additional considerations.

The first is grip. An athlete in trainers on polished concrete is a liability issue. Socked feet on a polished floor during a martial arts shoot is a liability issue that becomes a personal injury claim if someone goes down. Ask what the floor surface is — not from the listing photos but in specific terms — and whether there's rubber matting available for the shooting area. Most serious studios have matting somewhere in the building. Not all of it will be clean enough for the background area, but worth asking.

The second is durability. Sports shoots generate impact. A boxer shadow-boxing, a basketball player pivoting, a dancer landing jumps — these aren't gentle on floors. Some studios have explicit policies about sports photography that cover floor damage liability. Check this before you book, and before the athlete arrives and someone tells them they can't do what the brief requires.

Power for sports photography lighting

Sports photography typically wants either frozen action or motion blur. These are different lighting philosophies and different power demands.

Frozen action: you need flash duration fast enough to stop movement cleanly. The Profoto B10 Plus (500Ws) and Godox AD600 Pro both do this well — but not at full power. At full power the flash duration is too slow to freeze fast athletic movement without some blur. The trick is dialling down to around 1/16 or 1/32 power, where the duration shortens enough to stop a punch or a sprint stride cleanly. Trade-off: less output, which means working closer to the subject or opening your aperture. Plan the studio layout with that in mind. Multiple heads, multiple positions — three or four flash heads for a large set is common on sports work. Flashes are intermittent so the total power draw isn't huge, but the combined stand and head setup needs space, and recycle times matter if you're shooting fast sequences.

Motion blur (long exposure, intentional movement): this is about controlling ambient light rather than adding flash power. You need a studio with genuine full-blackout capability — not "we have curtains" blackout. Actual blackout curtains or shutters that seal the windows completely and keep the room at zero ambient light when the studio door is closed.

The few studios I've used that genuinely achieve proper blackout for long-exposure sports work are the ones with proper roller shutter systems, not just heavy curtains. Roller shutters seal completely and don't billow when someone opens a door. Worth asking about specifically if long-exposure or light-painting sports work is part of the brief.

Background options for sports photography

White infinity cove is the standard for clean athlete portraits and most commercial sports briefs — kit shots, sports nutrition advertising, club sponsor content. For the cove to work for full-body movement shots, you need a cove wide enough to keep the athlete within the curved section during movement — a 9m or 12m wide cove rather than a 6m one — and deep enough that there's floor space for the run-up or action before the athlete reaches the camera position.

Coloured seamless paper is good for more editorial sports work. You can switch colours quickly, which matters on a brief with multiple athletes or multiple looks in a day. Practical consideration: you'll go through a lot of paper. Athletes in trainers on a white seamless pull it significantly harder than a static fashion shoot. Budget for paper replacement.

Black or dark backgrounds: dramatically different look, needs genuine blackout to avoid the background going grey-black rather than true black. The same blackout requirements as motion-blur work apply here.

The health and safety conversation

I flag this because I've seen it handled badly. Sports photography studios in the UK are the same as any studio from a liability perspective — the studio owner is responsible for the condition of the premises, the photographer/client is responsible for the activity undertaken. For any shoot involving athletes performing at high intensity — jumps, martial arts, contact sports — it's worth having a clear written understanding with the studio about:

Floor condition and liability for slips or falls
Whether the studio's insurance covers sports and athletic activity (some policies explicitly exclude it)
Whether any specific equipment — trampolines, raised platforms, anything that changes the physics of the activity — is permitted on the premises

Most studios won't have thought about this in depth. Most won't have a problem with a controlled athletic shoot. But raise it before the day rather than discovering on the morning that their insurance won't cover it or that the floor is slipperier than the listing photos suggested.

What I look for in a sports photography studio

In order of priority: floor area (minimum 200sqm for any action brief), ceiling height above 5m, floor surface with grip matting available, proper blackout for flash work, and enough power for a four-head flash setup on two independent circuits. After that: loading access for equipment (I sometimes travel with a lot of seamless paper on a big sports brief), and a changing room big enough for the athlete to warm up in rather than just change kit.

The studios I've found best for sports photography in London are the larger industrial conversions in the east and south-east — Hackney Wick, Bermondsey, Deptford. The floor areas there are big enough and the ceiling heights are genuinely generous. For anything outside London, the Manchester production studios in Trafford Park come up consistently — the building footprints are big, the ceilings are high, and the floor-to-price ratio makes sense for a brief that needs serious space.
