The brief looks simple on paper: book a white studio, get the models jumping. The problem is that activewear and sportswear campaigns have a specific set of studio requirements that most generic listings don't address, and the gaps tend to show up halfway through a shoot day — when the ceiling's too low for the overhead rig, the floor's too slippy for the running sequence, or the 13A ring main has tripped for the third time because the production's running three Aputure LS 600d Pros and a hair station off the same circuit.

I've shot activewear for four different UK brands in the last two years. Here's what I'd tell myself before the first one.

Ceiling height: the number that actually matters

Most photography studio listings quote a ceiling height. Most activewear photographers don't check it closely enough. For a shoot that involves full-length standing or seated poses with a standard boom arm setup, 3m is workable. For dynamic movement — jumps, athletic extensions, overhead arms — you need 4m minimum, and I'd rather have 4.5m.

The reason isn't just the models. It's the light placement. If you're shooting a running athlete at full stride with a key light at a 45-degree angle above and a fill from a large octobox at head height, a 3m ceiling means your modifier is already almost touching the ceiling when you raise it to the right angle. You end up compromising on light quality because the room won't let you put the softbox where it needs to go.

There are studios in east London — a couple of the bigger spaces in Hackney Wick and one in Tottenham — with ceiling heights that hit 5m or above in the shooting area. Those rooms transform what's physically possible for dynamic work. They're not cheap, but for a movement-led campaign, the ceiling is doing a lot of work.

The floor situation

Polished concrete looks beautiful in lifestyle content. It is a liability for activewear shoots. Models running and jumping on polished concrete in socks or bare feet during fit checks is a serious slip risk — and the studios that have it aren't always set up to provide matting for the approach to the shooting zone. Ask before you book what the floor surface is, and whether grip matting is available for the transition zones around the set.

The studios I prefer for movement work have either:

A rubber or sports-vinyl floor surface in the main shooting area, or
Polished concrete with removable grip mats available as standard equipment

Seamless paper on a hard floor adds some grip, but once it gets walked on for a few takes it tears. If you're shooting in actual trainers the whole time, paper holds up better. But a model doing a jump sequence in grip socks on a 2.75m white paper roll that's already been walked on for four hours is a different thing entirely. The paper tears under impact, the backdrop loses its clean run, and you've used up your backup roll by 1pm.

Vinyl backdrop on rollers is more practical for this brief. It holds up better under footfall, cleans between models, and doesn't require a fresh roll every three hours.

Power: what continuous LED actually needs

Sportswear and activewear content increasingly goes hybrid — stills plus video in the same shoot day, sometimes with the same lighting setup. That means continuous LED rather than strobe. And continuous LED draws power continuously, not in short high-current bursts the way strobe does.

An Aputure LS 600d Pro draws about 720W at full output. Run three of those — a standard key/fill/rim three-light setup — and you're at 2,160W. That's around 9.4 amps at 230V, well within a 13A circuit on its own. But add a hair station (1,200W hairdryer = ~5.2A), a laptop and tethering station, a steamer for garments, and a phone charging station for a ten-person crew, and a single 13A ring main is at its limit or beyond it.

The studios that handle hybrid shoots properly have at least two independent 16A circuits in the shooting area, ideally a dedicated 32A circuit for production power. Ask for the power spec in writing. "We have good power" is not a spec. "32A single-phase on two independent circuits in the main shooting space" is a spec.

Background and set considerations

Most activewear campaigns don't want a styled set. The brief is typically clean white, clean grey, or clean black — pure graphic environments that let the clothing work. A 9ft seamless roll in white is fine for tight upper-body work. But for full-length running sequences, you need width. A proper cyclorama with a 6m+ wide floor is the right room for this. Trying to shoot a full-stride running athlete on a 2.4m wide backdrop means constant flagging to keep the edges of the paper out of frame.

Some studios offer coloured vinyl seamless — neutral greys and warm off-whites that photograph differently from pure white without needing a colour grade. Worth asking about if your brief is going for a slightly warmer aesthetic. But verify the exact colour in natural light rather than trusting the listing photograph, which was probably shot on a bright day with the studio lit to flatter the space.

The changing and fitting room question

A ten-look activewear shoot with two models means twenty outfit changes. That's a lot of time in a cramped changing area if the studio isn't set up for quick turnovers. The changing facilities I look for:

At least two private changing bays, not just a curtained corner
A rail for hanging garments — ideally two, so looks can be hung in shoot order
Good mirrors with overhead lighting at face height, not just a bathroom mirror
Space for a steamer without it being in someone's way

Studios that have a designated styling area adjacent to the shooting space rather than inside it are meaningfully better for this brief. The shoot floor stays focused. The styling area handles the chaos. I've worked on days where the changing area was so cramped that the stylist and the model couldn't both be in it at the same time, which adds about four minutes to every outfit change — on a ten-look day, that's forty minutes of wasted shoot time.

Booking windows and what to check first

Studios with proper ceiling heights, good power and vinyl floors are not the cheapest rooms. In London, expect full-day rates for spaces that genuinely fit this brief to sit between £700 and £1,200 depending on location and season. Manchester and Leeds options exist at £400–£600 for comparable square footage. The Hackney Wick and Tottenham belt tends to have the best value-to-spec ratio in London for large-volume movement work.

Before you book, I'd add one question to the standard spec checklist: ask what the highest shoot they've hosted recently involved, whether that was a product or a person. A studio that's hosted movement work before knows what it's for and tends to be better set up for it. A studio that mainly does tabletop product work and headshots won't necessarily have thought through the floor matting, the changing area layout, or the backdrop width requirements for a running campaign.
