Backdrop choice is one of those decisions that seems trivial until you make the wrong call on a shoot day. I've ruined a £35 roll of seamless paper with one muddy boot print at 10am and had to improvise for the remaining six hours of a catalogue shoot. I've also dragged a heavy canvas backdrop to a location job that would've been better served by a lightweight vinyl, and I've used an £18 paper roll for six months of headshot work before eventually deciding to replace it.

The right answer depends entirely on the brief. So here's how I think about it.

Seamless paper: the default, and the limits

Seamless paper is the background most photographers reach for first, and for good reason. The light absorption is excellent — it doesn't reflect or create hot spots the way a glossy surface would. The tonal consistency across a wide background is reliable. And it's cheap enough that replacing a damaged section isn't a crisis.

Standard widths are 2.18m (86") and 2.72m (107"). For most portrait work, 2.18m is enough — it gives you background width for a single subject or a close two-shot without wasted material. For full-length fashion work or group shots, 2.72m is the minimum. Anything involving a product wider than about 1.2m on the background itself, same thing.

Colorama is the most visible brand in UK studios. Savage, Superior Seamless and BD Backgrounds are other names you'll encounter. The actual paper quality doesn't vary enormously between the main brands at the same price point. What varies is colour accuracy — if consistent, on-brand colours matter to a client, check the paper against a colour calibration card before the shoot, not during it.

But seamless paper is fragile. Any foot traffic across the dropped portion — and there will be foot traffic — creates creases and marks that are visible in wide shots. Outdoors, it's basically useless in any wind above a gentle breeze. For location work, it's a liability. For studio work where models or clients will walk through the frame, you're touching it up in post or rolling it down fresh for every couple of setups. Neither option is free.

When I reach for paper

Headshots and portrait work. Product photography where the subject stays still and isn't placed on the dropped backdrop. Video work with a talking head or presenter where nobody's walking across the background. Any session where the brief is clean, consistent tone and the background isn't going to take physical abuse.

For these briefs, paper is the best call. Cheap, easy to set up, excellent light absorption, and if something goes wrong you roll down another section.

Vinyl backdrops: the location workhorse

Vinyl changed how I approach location work. It's durable enough to roll out on grass or gravel, wipe clean at the end, roll back up and use again two days later. Try that with paper and you've ruined it.

The difference is surface finish. Matte vinyl absorbs light reasonably well — not as well as paper, but better than glossy vinyl, which will give you hot spots under any serious flash. If you're buying vinyl for general-purpose use, matte finish is the call. Glossy vinyl has its own look — it works for certain fashion aesthetics, reflective floor effects, high-key commercial work — but it's not a general substitute for seamless paper.

Weight is the drawback. A quality vinyl roll in a wide width is heavy enough to know you're carrying it. For location jobs where you're loading a van and carrying kit into a space, vinyl adds up. I travel with vinyl for outdoor location work and product sessions on rough surfaces. For studio work where I have a hanging system and I'm not carrying anything further than fifteen metres, I stick with paper.

Cost is also higher upfront than paper — a decent vinyl in a wide width runs £80–£150 compared to £25–£45 for a paper roll — but the longevity changes the maths. I've had vinyl rolls last three years of regular use. Paper doesn't come close to that in heavy use.

When I reach for vinyl

Outdoor location work, any brief where the background will get direct foot traffic, commercial jobs where the surface needs to double as both background and flooring (think full-body fashion against a plain colour with the subject standing on the same material), and any situation where I need to roll up and move between two locations in the same day.

The catch is that vinyl doesn't work as well in a wide infinity cyc application — the seams, the way it lies, the weight pulling it down differently than paper. For a proper cyclorama setup in a studio, paper is still the right call.

Canvas backdrops: the slow investment

Canvas is the material that photographers tend to either love or not use at all. I use it for portrait and editorial work where I want texture, depth and a background that photographs differently than a flat colour.

Painted canvas — hand-painted, typically, with multiple tones blended to create a painterly rather than digital quality — gives you a depth in images that paper doesn't. It's most visible in black and white portrait work, where tonal variation in the background adds dimension without distracting. Colour portrait work too, particularly with any vintage or editorial aesthetic.

Canvas is durable. A quality painted canvas backdrop handled carefully lasts years. It's also non-reflective — no hot spots, no surface sheen issues. The flip side is that it's heavy, it requires proper hanging (not just two backdrop stands with a crossbar), and it wrinkles if stored folded rather than rolled. That last point catches people out. Store it wrong and it takes a full shooting day for the wrinkles to drop out under gravity.

Prices for a quality painted canvas in a 2.7m width start around £150–£250 and go up from there for custom or oversized pieces. More expensive than paper per unit, but if you're doing regular portrait work and the aesthetic fits your brand, it's worth having two or three in your kit permanently.

When I reach for canvas

Formal portrait sessions, editorial work, headshots where the client wants something more artistic than a clinical white background. Maternity portraiture. Any brief where the texture and depth of the background is part of the image rather than something to hide.

It's also the background that makes the most sense for selling your work directly. A headshot against a painted canvas looks more considered than a headshot against plain white paper — particularly in a market where most photographers are using the same white Colorama.

Mixed setups and studio inventory

If you're running a studio or doing regular hired-studio work, the honest answer is that you want all three at different points. A 2.72m wide seamless paper for clean product and headshot work. A matte vinyl in one or two colours for location and floor-standing setups. One or two painted canvas backdrops for the portrait work that justifies the price point.

The question for each shoot is which brief demands which material. Getting that wrong costs you in post-production time or in replacing damaged material mid-session. Getting it right is one of those invisible things that just makes the day run smoother.

What hired studios usually have

Most studio hire spaces in the UK stock seamless paper in white, black and one or two mid-tones. Some have grey and cream. Beyond that it varies — some studios have a proper textile backdrop hanging system, some have canvas options as extras, and some have nothing beyond what's in the hanging system that came with the space when the owner originally set it up.

Always ask before you book, particularly if the background is load-bearing for the brief. 'We have seamless paper' and 'we have a 2.72m white, black, grey and mid-grey in Colorama plus a matte dark green for accent work' are different answers. The second tells you someone's actually thought about what their photographers need.
