"We have a changing room" is one of those studio listing claims that can mean almost anything. I've shown up to a space that advertised changing facilities and found: a curtained corner next to the kitchen, a converted storage cupboard with no mirror, a toilet with a hook on the door, and once, memorably, a gap behind a roller shutter that someone had helpfully stuck a floor-length mirror next to.

For portrait, fashion, beauty, and lifestyle work, the quality of the changing and makeup area is almost as important as the quality of the shooting space. Models who can't prep properly don't look right on camera. Hair and makeup artists who can't work in proper light produce work that looks off under studio conditions. And talent who feel cramped and uncomfortable in a prep space carry that into their performance.

So: here's what I actually check before I book a studio that claims to have changing or makeup facilities.

Makeup lighting is the first question

Makeup that looks right in daylight or under a well-calibrated studio fixture is the goal. The problem is that a lot of makeup areas in studios are lit with whatever happened to be overhead when the space was converted — often warm tungsten, old fluorescent strips, or badly positioned LED panels that cast heavy shadows under the eyes and jawline.

For professional makeup application, you want a colour temperature around 5,000K–5,500K and a CRI (colour rendering index) of 90 or above. That's industry-standard for a reason: it most closely approximates natural daylight, which means what the MUA sees under the mirror lights matches what the camera sees under the main studio setup. Below CRI 90, lipstick colours shift, skin tones look wrong, and the MUA is essentially working half-blind.

Ask specifically: "What's the colour temperature and CRI of the makeup area lighting?" Most studio owners who've thought about it properly will know. The ones who haven't will say "it's quite bright" and leave it at that. That's your signal to either press harder or factor in bringing your own ring light.

Mirror size and positioning

Sounds trivial. It's not. A full-length mirror in the changing area is essential for any brief involving clothing — you need to see the whole look, not just the face. A well-lit vanity mirror at seated height is essential for makeup. Both in the same space is ideal; most spaces offer neither properly.

The mirror should be large enough that a standing adult can see themselves from head to foot. It should be positioned so that the main light source hits the face without casting shadows from a cabinet, shelf, or the mirror's own frame. Check the photos in the listing carefully — you can often see the actual setup, or its absence, if you zoom in on the background.

Space for a makeup artist to work

A hair and makeup artist needs room to work. That means a chair that goes to the right height (a standard desk chair doesn't work — a proper MUA stool or adjustable chair does), a surface large enough to lay out a case, and enough clearance around the chair for the MUA to move around the talent without constantly shuffling the furniture.

The minimum workable space is roughly 2m × 2m clear floor around the chair. Less than that and your MUA is banging their elbows on walls and having to move their kit every time they change brush. It sounds like basic facility management but a surprising number of studio changing areas don't achieve it.

If you're running multiple talent through makeup at the same time — which happens on any commercial job with a few different cast members — you need this space multiplied, or separate prep stations. Ask whether they can accommodate two chairs simultaneously and what the actual floor area of the makeup space is. Not the listing's vague description: the actual floor area in square metres.

Changing area privacy and logistics

Curtains are not changing rooms. A door that locks is a changing room. If your production has talent who need to change between looks — and most fashion or lifestyle productions do — you need actual privacy, not a piece of fabric that someone could walk behind by accident.

The changing room should also be large enough that a model can change comfortably when the look involves something complex: a structured jacket, a full skirt, shoes with straps. Tight spaces slow down costume changes and add time to your shooting day. Budget an extra fifteen minutes per talent per look change if the changing room is cramped. That adds up.

Location matters too. A changing room that's on the other side of the building from the shooting space means models are walking half-dressed through a shared corridor every time there's a look change. That's uncomfortable for the talent and impractical in the middle of a shoot day. Ideally the prep area is directly adjacent to the shooting space, or at least screened from any common areas.

Hot water and a decent loo

Not glamorous to mention but genuinely relevant for long shoot days. Check that hot water is reliably available — hair and makeup artists often need to wash brushes during a job, and running cold water or a temperamental boiler causes delays. Check the bathroom situation, particularly if you're bringing talent from outside the studio's normal client base. "We share with the office next door" is a real answer I've been given.

Steaming and clothes prep

For any job with a stylist, you'll need somewhere to hang and steam garments. A full-height rail that the studio provides is standard in purpose-built fashion studios; it's an afterthought in converted spaces. Ask whether they have a clothes rail available, whether you can use a steam iron or garment steamer (some studios have carpet under the shooting area and worry about moisture), and whether there's a dedicated prep area for the stylist separate from the makeup space.

A stylist working in the same 2m × 2m box as the makeup artist, with garments hanging from the ceiling fixtures, and talent trying to change in the corner — it happens, and it's chaos. The shoots where this stuff is sorted in advance are always better days than the ones where everyone's improvising.

What good actually looks like

The best changing and makeup setups I've worked with in UK studios have a few things in common: a dedicated room (lockable door, not a curtain), a makeup counter at the right seated height with Hollywood-style bulb lighting around a large mirror, a separate full-length mirror for dressing, at least 4m × 3m of clear floor, a hanging rail pre-set for garments, a sink with hot water, and an outlet for the steamer and any other prep equipment the team brings.

Studios in London — Hackney, Dalston, Peckham — that have invested in the prep area tend to hold onto repeat bookings from fashion clients much more effectively than ones that haven't. The prep facility is part of the service, and when it works properly, the whole shoot day runs smoother.

What to ask before you book

My standard pre-booking questions for any studio where prep quality matters:

What's the exact size of the makeup area?
What's the colour temperature and CRI of the lights above the makeup mirror?
Is the changing room a separate room with a lockable door?
Can you fit two talent and two makeup chairs in the makeup space simultaneously?
Is there a garment rail, and can we use a steamer?
Is the prep area adjacent to the shooting space or is there a walk between the two?
Is there hot water available throughout the day?

That list sounds like a lot, but it takes about three minutes on a call and saves hours of improvisation on the day.

The listings problem

Most studio listings don't specify any of this in useful detail. "Changing facilities available" is the norm; "4m × 3m makeup room with 5000K CRI-95 Hollywood lighting and full-height mirror" is the exception. The photography and fashion studios that have invested in proper prep facilities know it's a selling point and tend to photograph it and describe it well. The ones where it's an afterthought tend not to feature it prominently in the listing at all.

The Creative Studio Hire directory lets you filter by facilities including changing areas and makeup rooms. If that's a hard requirement for your brief, filtering on it first narrows the list to studios that have actively indicated they offer it — which is a better starting point than wading through every studio in a city and checking each listing individually.

The prep area is never the headline act. But it's often what separates a smooth shoot day from one where the production assistant is moving furniture between every look and the talent spends half the day in a corridor. Worth five minutes of diligence before you confirm the booking.
