There are two types of photographers who get this wrong. The ones who always bring their own kit regardless of what the studio has — loading in heavy cases for a shoot where the house Godox setup would have been fine. And the ones who always rely on the studio's included lighting and get caught when "fully equipped" turns out to mean a ring light and a reflector.

I've been both types at different points in my career. Here's where I've landed after enough repeat experiences to have an actual system.

What "included lighting" means in practice

Studio listings across the UK use "fully equipped" or "lights included" to cover an enormous range of actual kit. At the good end: a properly maintained Godox AD600 Pro (600Ws) with triggers, a 120cm octobox, a beauty dish, two C-stands, and a second fill unit. That's a functional one-light portrait or product setup and covers most straightforward briefs.

At the less good end: a single LED panel on a telescoping stand, one softbox with a faded inner diffusion, and a reflector that's been left in the corner with a torn silver surface. I've arrived at listed "fully equipped" studios to find exactly this.

The gap between these two realities is wide. And the listing won't tell you which one you're walking into. So the first rule is: always ask for the specific kit list before you confirm a booking. "What strobes do you have, what modifiers, what stands, and when were they last serviced?" If the answer is vague or slow in coming, that's useful information.

The case for relying on studio kit

Loading gear is not free. A Godox AD600 Pro body with battery weighs around 3kg. A carry case with two strobes, triggers, modifiers and stands is fifteen to twenty kilograms and takes up floor space in a van. On a shoot day that involves travel, that weight and bulk has a real cost — in time, logistics, and wear on the equipment.

For shoots where the studio's included kit is adequate for the brief, leaving my own strobes behind is the right call. A portrait session or headshot day in a studio with a properly working Godox setup doesn't need a Profoto B10 Plus (500Ws) from my kit bag. The images will look the same. I can redirect that loading time and that energy to the shoot itself.

Studios in London at the mid-to-upper price point — £90–£140/hr — generally have kit that's worth trusting. They've invested in the inventory because they know photographers will judge them on it. Studios in thinner markets, or at the budget end, are more variable.

The case for bringing your own

I know my kit. I know how my Profoto B10 behaves at three-quarter power with my 100cm Magnum reflector. I know how my Godox AD600 Pro handles fast recycling on a burst-mode test shot. I know the modifier attachments and the trigger range and the battery behaviour at the end of a long day. That knowledge is worth something on a brief where the lighting quality is non-negotiable.

The other reason to bring your own is consistency. If you do a lot of repeat work for the same client — ongoing headshot days, regular product lines, rolling campaign work — your client has come to expect a particular quality of light. Replicating that quality in different studios is much easier when you're bringing the same gear setup every time rather than adapting to whatever the house kit is.

And then there are the briefs where the studio's included kit simply isn't the right tool. A beauty dish is a beauty dish. But a 180cm parabolic with a central white reflector produces a different quality of light that the studio's basic softbox cannot approximate. Specialty modifiers — large parabolics, gridded strip lights, specific colour gels, Fresnel attachments — are rarely part of standard studio inventory. If the brief demands them, you're bringing them.

The equipment hire middle ground

There's a third option that UK photographers underuse: renting kit from a specialist hire house rather than relying on either studio-included gear or your own.

Kit hire rates in the UK for lighting: a Profoto Pro-11 (2400Ws) with one head runs roughly £65–£90/day from a London hire house. An Arri SkyPanel S60-C — RGBW LED, 2800–10000K range, equivalent output to a 2000W tungsten soft light — is typically £80–£120/day. A Godox AD600 Pro (600Ws) is around £35–£50/day.

If you're shooting one or two days per month, hiring specialist kit for those days is significantly cheaper than owning it. An Arri SkyPanel costs around £3,000–£4,000 to buy. At £100/day hire, you'd need thirty or more days of use per year before owning made financial sense over renting — and that's before maintenance, insurance, and depreciation.

The hire house model works particularly well for: high-end kit you use occasionally (large format strobes, LED panels, cinema lights), kit for a specific brief that doesn't recur (a 360-degree rig, a ring flash setup, specific colour-temperature panels), and situations where you need more units than you own (a four-head setup for a large cyclorama when you only carry two).

Working out what you actually need to own

The kit that makes sense to own is the kit you use every shoot day. For me, that's a Profoto B10 Plus (500Ws) for the situations where I want a portable, battery-powered unit that's compact enough to travel and capable enough for most portrait and product briefs. And a Godox AD600 Pro (600Ws) as the working strobe for shoots where I want more power and can afford the extra bulk.

The Godox AD600 Pro costs roughly £400–£500 new and probably £250–£300 on the used market. At £45/day hire for a comparable unit, you need ten or more days per year of use before owning pays back versus renting. If you're shooting more than that, buying makes sense. If you're an emerging photographer doing four to six studio days a year, renting is cheaper and leaves your capital available for things that generate more return.

The Profoto B10 Plus costs considerably more — around £1,400–£1,600 new. A comparable hire rate is £55–£75/day. You need twenty-plus days per year of use before owning beats renting on pure maths. The justification for buying is usually speed, consistency, and the quality argument — which is real, because the Profoto ecosystem of modifiers is deeper and more varied than Godox's, and if you're working in it regularly the investment has ongoing compound value.

What I tell photographers starting out

Hire before you buy. Every time. Until you've used a piece of kit enough to know that you need it regularly, hiring is the right financial decision and the right creative decision — because you're choosing the right tool for the brief rather than using what you own.

The moment you buy a strobe before you fully understand your own shooting patterns is the moment you start building a kit that fits yesterday's version of your career rather than where it's actually going. I've bought kit I've barely used. I've also hired kit I subsequently bought because the use case proved consistent. The second approach is better.

When the studio kit decision matters most

On a headshot day in a reputable studio with proper included lighting: trust the house kit, save yourself the loading. On a complex commercial campaign with a client whose lighting expectations are high: bring your own and know your setup. On a one-off brief that needs specialist lighting you don't own: hire it.

And whenever you're booking a studio that you haven't used before: ask for the kit list in writing before you decide which of those three paths applies.
